Dave Taylor are you OK?

and Jeanie??? radio station says evacuations at Alpine

sounds like the fire has cleared Marfa for the most part. seems the airport has been spared unless more pops up. evacuations elsewhere though. another problem is the fire depts are volunteer, small, and far and few between in this part of the country. hopefully they can get it all under control. not sure about down there but it's supposed to be even windier here tomorrow.

I have spoken with Dave, he and all his kin are fine; they did have to evacuate Fort Davis, are now on a trek back to Marfa, where they have a place of refuge arranged.

Airport is fine, but it was (apparently) nip and tuck; some cattle were allowed into the airport so as to avoid being prematurely cooked.

Spike, please keep us posted. I hope the clinic and his house will be spared. I hope they were able to re-locate the animals in their clinic. This is so sad for so many in that area. :(

No news on that front at this time. Massive winds coupled with 7 months of dry weather yielded an unstoppable juggernaut of a fire.

It continues to the north, unchecked.

Does this mean he will smell funny at the next fly-in?

"Why did the three wise men smell like smoke?"

"Because they had come from a far."

Wayne:

Dave smells funny anyway.

Spike, any updates from Dave? This is worrisome. Is their house okay? Their kitties? The clinic? The animals? Please post updates when you get them.

What is the name of the place in the hills that they took us to for dinner one night? It might have been part of a fort or hotel. It was really pretty there...lovely buildings. And what is the name of the little restaurant in town?

Just spoke with Dave. He says that the approach to town looks like a war zone, all the power poles burnt, etc.

Blessedly, the clinic and their home are both OK, as is the Grand Companions (the new humane society facility).

Dave tells me a generator is on its way and that they expect to be busy for a while.

Resilient folks, these ones.

What a relief!!! Thanks so much for that good news! I've been searching on the internet for news and it sounds like a lot of structures were destroyed in that area.

Is there anything we can do to help them?

Question asked, Dave promises he'll tell me when / what, and I'll pass along any needs and requests as received.

KMRF (Marfa Airport) was in peril, but emerged OK; E38 (Alpine) is fine.

Glad to hear.

Talked to Matt Michael last night. So far it looks like Marfa is ok, but he had some pretty gnarly stories of driving through the fire. At some point he ran into a herd of stampeding cows and clipped one :hairraise:

Apparently the airport was spared, but from the reports i've seen Ft Davis wasn't so lucky. It's good to know that Dave is doing ok though.

Here are todays pics, I put them on my facebook thingy but not sure how to share on the main fire FB page, go ahead if you know how
http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery...jsp?albumId=800474285310&ownerId=878261273110
if a log in is required, I think someone will post a way around that?

We are fine. Can see 7 fires burning in the distance tonight. Still losing poles, the bases burned all day and now they are dropping but the crews are on top of it immediately. They are amazing. Our fire crews have also been absolutely heroic through this.
Have a few burned kitties but believe they will make it. Some horrible stories of animal losses, suffice it to say only that. :(

Dave

Thanks for the update, Dave. Glad you're safe. So far no luck viewing the gallery; hasn't even prompted for a username//password. Could be something wrong with my Adobe Flash; I've been having problems with Adobe lately.

All I got was the "sunflower" progress indicator... But it never seemed to make any progress.

Dave, if y'all need anything, I'm heading to Texas this weekend with an empty 310. Would be glad to shuttle supplies, just let me know.

Glad you're alright!

Got time to stop by for Tex-Mex?

The link in my email worked okay last night and today. I wonder if I should try posting that here?

Actually, yes. I have to go to Denison, TX. Any of the ADS troops want to get together?

please post the link or a fix!
cold front moved through last night, now smoke from fire to N has moved in - beautiful sunrise sort of like a yellow fog.
air is clear cold and less wind, should help the firefighters.

Denison doesn't have an airport, but Sherman Municipal has the cheapest fuel in the territory. Zackly where you going?

Has anyone heard from Jeannie?

no although it sounds like there has been no major damage at Alpine. They had a smaller fire the day before yesterday that started on the edge of town at a rodeo or something and blew away from town.

I don't know the exact town I'm picking up from, but they told me that KGYI or KDUA were the best choices. Either one looks like it's a hop, skip, and a jump away from ADS.

Full-size fridge or smaller? A full-sized fridge wouldn't fit through the door of the 310, but I do have one in my garage that you'd be welcome to otherwise. I also have a smaller fridge that might be better, and you could have that, too. Threw out my last spare cell phone (sorry), but got a laptop around.

KSWI is my normal fill-up spot, and only a few miles from both of the other airports. Lots of ADS owners use the self-serve pumps there.
