dammit! (Texas helo crash)

wow, very sad. pilot was a Vietnam veteran.
 
Unfortunately a friend of mine knew this couple. Just so sad.

Was at a hunting camp not to far north of there when it happened....seems like about that time we had a boundary passage with rain and a little wind...really a sad deal...

Well... crud. Horrible tragedy. RIP to the newlyweds and the pilot. Condolences to the family and friends.
 
Pilot was 76 years old an ATP and had 24K hours and had flown that family for 20 Years... reportedly
 
Bride and brother killed in crash on the way to the wedding. Neither looks comfortable during the flight portion.

Holy crap!! That was some thick soup! Wonder where this is from? One thing I noticed that I never thought about for some Helios is the instrument cluster seems far away from your sight line.

Thanks, I had seen that before and when this one happened that clinched it for me: I will never fly to or from my wedding in a helicopter. Should I ever get married again.
 
Helicopters scare me. I rode in one in Hawaii and it was super cool but I was scared the whole time. Just waiting for my demise the whole time lol

So sad...what a ****ty situation
 
The only time I can imagine being in a helo is my life depending on the ride, and in that case, those pilots are very proficient and professional and the birds well maintained. Voluntary ride? Nope.

When I had the heart attack the doctor wanted to use a helicopter to fly me 135 miles to a better hospital. I refused. I gave him the options of fixed wing, Greyhound or I drive myself. All the helicopter medevac crashes in the area I flew were due to VFR into IMC into rising terrain and the pilots were not instrument rated.

Watch the attitude indicator in the video. It goes from straight and level to almost inverted in a very short time. Almost makes me wonder if the attitude indicator might have failed.

Boy, you aren't kidding. If you look, when the camera first turns to the panel at 1:41, the AI shows them almost horizontal, then straightens out for about 8 seconds before going off again....I made a couple of screen shots (with red line added on AI):

For me, helicopters are exponentially more fun than fixed-wing. And I like airplanes.

One thing that makes me weak in the knees though is watching fatal aircraft accident videos.

Or having a connection to those in the event. The TX crash was a very sad event. But all things equal, I'd rather be in a helicopter over a plank wing any day or night.
 
I’m reading perceptions here vs facts when it comes to helicopter safety. Fact is, GA helicopter safety is in line with fixed wing. If you find any category that does better than the other, it would be marginal at best. Depending on which years you look at the accident rates, helicopters can even edge out fixed wing.

I caught a video last night of them taking off. Seemed normal enough. An article this morning said he'd made a mayday call right before the accident, but there were zero details about the call.

Because there is no such thing as a "vintage" helicopter--for the most part, if they're still flying they're still working for a living... :)
