Wow! #1 Florida QB was reduced to tears following the beating they took from Alabama in the SEC Conference game. The tide looked pretty good. BCS bowls are going to be interesting.

Nebraska lost to Texas in the BIG 12 Championship game when, after a questionable review, the officials put 1 second on the game clock that expired. Texas kicked a 46 yard field goal for the win by 1 point. That was a nail biter! Nebraska's defense was unbelieveable!

I love college football!

Hey! Waddayoumean questionable review :mad3:

Sorry. I couldn't believe Colt McCoy let the clock get that far down before throwing the ball out of bounds! I thought the review was correct, but couldn't believe they played it that close.

Yea, to me, there's nothing like college ball; especially when you know some of the players, members of the band or others involved. Great stuff.

From what I saw, Alabama sure deserved it; I'm worried 'bout Texas. Colt McCoy had a chance to put an exclamation point behind his Heisman nomination last night and did do it. Alabama's running back (Mark Ingram) did.

Personally I think that he screwed up and got lucky that the kicker did his job. the way he was looking before that last play he was awfully worried.

exclamation on heisman? how many interceptions did he throw? they certainly didn't dominate the game. of course i dont follow college football that close so I don't know how bad his competition is.

A guy at the airport said he played in the cotton bowl back when. When I asked what position, he said "tenor sax."

It goes back and forth so much Tony; I don't know. But, the folks I was listening to yesterday during all the pre-game stuff had, McCoy, Tebow and Ingram as the top contenders--several also being considered. McCoy looked great last week as did Tebow; Ingram looked terrible. This week it's the opposite. If you look at McCoy's overall record, it's very impressive. A lot of voters will send their votes in after the games yesterday. They will have to balance seasonal performance against the last game.

I thought the announcers did a great job on what was a real low scoring defensive contest. I'm a real Kirk Herbstreit fan. He's come a long way in a short period. I love his technical knowledge of the game and explanations of that. Adds real insight in many cases.

Guess we'll wait and see. I think all three will be invited to New York.

Dave

i like good defensive matchups. defense wins games.

Defense wins games.
Rebounding wins championships.

Oh.. Sorry, wrong sport.. I'll bring this up in a few months. ;)

The Tide finally looked good yesterday. I'm glad to see them FINALLY put someone away whole-heartedly. Ingram was like a human pinball machine yesterday. I don't know if he solidified a Heisman trophy or not - Heisman voters are very fickle - but he had an all-around solid game in a championship scenario which means more to me than a bronze trophy. With that said, the rest of the SEC better keep an eye on Richardson as well. Ingram is a Soph and Richardson is a Fresh - two totally different running styles, but both VERY effective.

Nebraska's Suh was absolutely amazing yesterday. I wish I had known to watch for him earlier this season.

Looking forward to the bowl season. My bro-in-law and I are kicking around the idea of making the trip to Pasadena to see the Tide add a side of Texas beef to their meal of Gator bites and Buzzard wings from the past two weeks. ;)

ROLL TIDE!!

One should expect it to be when playing high school football teams.

You'd have hated the ACC Championship game. Not sure how my Yellow Jackets won without forcing a punt. (Second week in a row on that pitiful statistic, 'cept they didn't win last week)...

1. The 1-second on the clock was the correct call, but I cannot believe that they let it get to that. I am told Mack was trying to call a time-out and the officials did not see it; I don't know about that.

2. I have a hard time throwing-down on Colt - Nebraska brought a remarkable defensive effort to the game, and it showed. I hope Colt's line can do better in protecting him against the Tide.

Yes, the ball hit the ground with one second but I've seen waaaaaaaaaay too many "last-second" field goal kicks where the ball passes through the uprights and hits the ground with 1 or 2 seconds left on the clock and then ticks down to 0:00 that I'm convinced that the referees were told they Best Call it Suitable.

It ain't like they were playing Zundy Jr. High. Nebraska's big kid may be the #1 pick.

Suh is returning next year :mad2:

He's got more metal pending (awards) than a hero from the Battle of the Bulge; there is even Heisman talk now.

McCoy was voted Offensive Player in the big 12; Brown the Coach of the year and Suh Defensive player.

Funny how an excellent player can make another look average. You say a GREAT matchup; as we did with Alabama/Florida. Kinna like there are two national championship games this year.

Dave

Actually, there is like 3 or 4.

The "real" one.
And whichever games TCU, BSU, and Cinci end up in.

Yet another argument for a real playoff.

Did y'all see any of that Cincy game? I don't know if they can play at the level of Texas or 'Bama, but with that kind of effort and spirit, maybe they (and TCU) deserve to try...?

Spike: Some how I get the feeling you think the BCS bowl should be set up to determine the best team; of course, that's now what it all about now. As good as some teams are, they just don't have the draw.

Best,

Dave

Alabama has an offense too, so if they can play a lick of defense I think the 'Horns are in a heap of trouble.

With respect to the other unbeatend, the past few years have proven that the presumed gap between the major conferences and the others is closing quickly.

Sorry Dave,

It has NOTHING to do with getting the best teams matched up. It is about money money money and making sure the big six conferences stay in power.

Suh is a senior. This is his last year as a Husker. He'll be a first round draft pick for the NFL for sure. He could have gone pro last year as he was drafted, but he and his family decided to play another year at NU. Momma Suh & Sister Suh carry alot of weight with the Boy Named Suh. He is Suh-perman!

Colt McCoy, TX QB had an interesting quote about Suh. He said; "I saw so much of him in the game we are now best friends." McCoy is a class act, I wish him good luck against Alabama. The tide is tough.

Ndumakong Suh will be missed by Nebraska fans, but never forgotten.

How true, Wayne. All depends upon who shows up to play, that day - for both teams.

Edit:

All being equal, I prefer Texas coming off of a squeaker, instead of a cake-walk. Help 'em focus.

Sorry Dave,

I think some of the bowl match ups have leaned toward getting teams with better draws into certain bowls.

Spike: playoffs have their own set of shortcomings. What do you want, the top four to play--what happens to five if there are five undefeated teams. Is is single elimination or double? Four undefeateds, who plays number one first--if they lose do they play for second or third? What happens to conference championships which have their own set of shortcomings? Why did Nebraska play Texas for the Big 12; they weren't number 2 in the conference. Etc.
How many games do you add to the college season? How do schools pay to get the teams to whereever? What happens to academics while is purportedly why the students are there to begin with.
Just no perfect answer.

Best,

Dave

A good friend (that I represented last year in the purchase of a KA-350) is head of the competition committee for a major bowl. The bowl officials and sponsors are most interested in "how well they travel" meaning how many fans can be expected to follow their teams to bowl games. The teams from the frozen north, especially from areas that aren't necessarily known as tourist hot-spots (hello, Lincoln) are known to be very supportive of their teams, especially when they travel to warm-weather areas for post-season games.

Uh, Spike, did you watch the same UT-Aggie game I did? That reality check didn't seem to light any fires for this week's contest with the Corn-men.

A couple of the announcers on one of the games this weekend had that same discussion with the same theme.

I think it's most obvious in the teams that place other than one and two. Sometimes they have matched teams with no losses against a team with a loss and good draw rather than having two undefeateds play each other. Same with lower ranking bowl team; they didn't necessarily play the next closest ranked team.

Ummm... yep.

(Wanders off to ponder...)

Playoffs seem to work without any issues in FCS (formerly known as I-AA), Division II, Division III, and NAIA. Easiest solution: FORCE all teams into conferences - 16 of them. Conference champs advance. No worries about rankings, or computers, or voting. 4 extra games max, and you can have the championship game on New Years Day. You can still have all your other meaningless bowl games as the 2nd in the Big 10/11 plays #2 in the Big 12 or SEC, and #3 plays #3 in another conference...then have some sort of big payout to the conference with the best record in the bowl games...

Then again, that would be too logical...

I agree, if one could just be logical, a system could be worked out. But we have big bowls that have been put up at great cost that want teams to play that have a draw. Colleges actually make money going to bowls that pay a lot. Somewhere I sniff a bit of a profit motive that may be a tad bit difficult to overcome.

Best,

Dave

And we need to bear in mind that the reason the coaches are in favor of the current bowlarama goofiness is that they get what amounts to another month of spring ball to get ready for next year. If you go to bowl game practices, you won't see too many graduating seniors working real hard during most of them.

Exactly. It was the right call technically. The thing is that if you go back and look at all of the other incomplete passes that game they always let another tick off the clock before it stops. Why don't they go back and correct all of those?

Suuuuuuh was an animal. I hope he gets invited to NYC for the heisman ceremony. If not, then I will lose all faith in that award.

Not so fast. I hate to be a sore looser, but, the NCAA rules states the officials cannot review the time clock unless there is an "egregious" time clock error, or there was a penalty. There was no penalty, and less than 1 second certainly is not an egregious time error.......unless you are a UT fan.

When the ball hit the ground to stop the clock it showed 1 second left. That mean there was actually LESS than 1 second left because the next tick of the clock is zero! The 1 second mark had been displayed for "sometime". You can't put back less than one second on the clock so the game should have been OVER!

How do we know the game clock was accurately synced with the video? Is it calibrated? No! Did the officials start the clock a second late on the start of the play? :mad3:

You are right, many, many times the officials let the clock run out or let it run several seconds past a play. That's just football. This was a "controlled" error by the officials, and it should NOT have been.

In any event, there is always next year. :yesnod:

I really loved watching Suh. But, watching the highlights on Sunday, that Spiller kid from Clemson is FAST. I would love to see his 40's. He could be a top 10 pick...

Seriously? The brain trust that is the BCS sceduled TCU to play Boisie State? WTF??? So the non-BCS schools get to play in a big bowl, but they don't get to play a BCS scool.

Also do we really need 33 bowl games? 66 of the 120 FBS schools are playing in some kind of bowl game. So why do we not have a playoff system again?

hey if there weren't 33 bowl games mediocre teams like Iowa State with barely 500 records couldn't feel good about themselves!!! Oh and their athletic depts wouldn't get the big payday either.

LOL, I hope the Insight Bowl gives out participation ribbons to the 'Clones so they have something to take home besides the hotel towels...:D
