Do you use a rear curtain flash to blur the bg and keep the subject sharp or is this pure technique?

Just technique. Pan with the aircraft while shooting, basically try to keep the aircraft centered in the frame the whole time. Lot's of practice!

Yeah, I think I would blur the whole thing.
 
I got blur-bg pictures of my car once. I agree, it requires a good hand and good aim. You take 100 pictures and hope that 1 comes out perfect. That's why I love digital photography.

Jack, did you catch the green belly on the Kodiak, by a chance? :D
