I have a friend that works for the VA hospital here in Albuquerque. She is looking for people to be in some kind of medical experiment that the hospital is running. Essentially, they give an MRI, and then shock the crap out of the person for an hour. Then another MRI.

I think I'm gonna do it (I could use the money, and said friend is a very attractive female). Will the FAA have any issues with me flying after this?
 
The real question is what are they shocking? Your whole body might not work well after which may be what they are looking for.

How many volts/amps and for how long? I wouldn't be worried about the MRI, in fact I'd love a free one. Ask if as part of the deal you can have it read by a specialist for disease detection.

The FRE's where I work are being typical so if your friends hospital can hold off on the experiments for about a month, I know where they can get about 20 volunteers if they're willing to pay for it and ship the lot of us down there.

Yes FAA will, if they find something incidental. Don't do it, Nick.
 
If you are really that hard up, selling plasma is repeatable, relatively painless, and not at all dangerous. Cathy and I have done that. We've never even considered letting people electrocute us, and we've been fairly desperate a few times...

Why don't they just MRI the patients receiving shock therapy at the psych unit?
If they are doing an MR of your brain afterward, they must think it may do something to your brain.

You know its only $150. Both of my parents freaked on me when I mentioned it to them, to the point where my dad offered me the $150 to not do it. I'm not that scrapped for cash, but I could always use some extra. Thanks for the unanimous answer. I'll have to back out of this one.
 
Just an MRI is probably no issue with the FAA. But the shocking part. Maybe you could be in a control group that does not get shocked.

Personal I think helping to advance medical science is a nobel thing to do. I would have said do it if you can avoid the shocks.

Not even an hour? Sheesh. You need to get out of whatever urbanopolis you are in. Around here you can get 2 hours of rental (wet) for that, and in my plane that's 5 hours of flying.
 
There are better ways to get dates. No matter how cute she is. And, I would be a bit worried about dating someone who WANTS to go out with someone who is willing to be shocked for an hour at a time. Just tell her you are a pilot. I would think that would work better.

I bet, if we took a collection, we could get you the $150 from POA members, rather than having you shock yourself ;)

I still fly with a CFI. one'a these days, my costs will go down.

JOOC, by "shock the crap out" are you referring to some kind of medical muscle stimulator? I've used a couple of those devices to ease low back pain and don't think there'd be any issues for flying as long as the intensity was within reason. OTOH if it's really as you say, I wouldn't go there for $1500 as I've had a few inadvertant serious electrical shocks and have no desire to repeat the experience diliberately.

When the work was done by vacuum tubes, there were plenty of opportunities for human conductors (electrical, not train or orchestra), but with practically everything solid state these days the only nasty stuff I work with are the xenon strobe drivers. I can remember tossing an electrolytic capacitor charged to a few hundred volts around the high school electronics lab and forming a human circuit in 1st grade science class that was connected to a telephone magneto. Then the game was to see who would be the first to let go. I think I got pretty good at cranking the magneto since I had one at home to practice with.

Yeah, you can get a single an instructor for less than $100 (wet) here too. Just under 2 hours worth for $150.

Well.. depends on the plane. I can get a C152 and instructor for $97 hr. New Skyhawks are $100 hr, as are new Tigers and new Archers. Guess she isn't doing to bad for dual, but getting the license will sure cheapen up flying for her!

The more I think about it the more I would say find out what they are going to shock. If this is design to look at muscle groups , like the arm or leg, then I doubt you will be in much discomfort and the data could be valuable. Keep in mind this is a VA hospital. A little discomfort to find a better treatment for stroke or battlefield injuries is a small price to pay.

Here is what I would do. I would ask for more details on what the shock part is all about. I would then ask an FAA medical examiner what he thinks.

Of course , I've already arrange to donate my body to a medical school so I may not be the most objective source

Define "Shock the crap out of". Do you have need of an MRI? Can you read one (really not that hard and there are some good texts to walk you through it) might be worth it to get the pics of your back, although sometimes disk injuries and degeneration are actually easier to spot on an x-ray. If they're just using high voltage low amperage juice, it shouldn't do you much damage, and if they put the electrodes in the right place you might enjoy it, and if you collect the results you can make a few hundred bucks off of that as well.:D

The description is surely not one the researchers provided, someone has embellished it - I can appreciate literary license as much as the next person but before you decide, you gotta get the facts.

0.1mV for 1/100th of a second at a time on your pinkie?
or 100V for an hour through your eyeballs?

This could be stupid or it could be easy money.

Sky Hog, while I understand the rather attractive friend angle, and I know how appealing perspiring, convulsing, disoriented men are to women (hehehe) I'd suggenst you just take her for a ride in the airplane. Maybe a complex one (now that you're night current and all :yes: ).
 
Ok - I called and got some info.

They use varying intensities of shocks through electrodes placed on the back of the knee and the elbow. They increase the intensity randomnly and you never know what intensity it comes at. They said that it varies from a small tingle to a sharp pain, and never lasts more than 15 seconds at a time. At one point in the middle somewhere, there will be a 15 minute gap with no shocking, but you are not told when its going to be.

The point behind the MRI is to get real-time information on how the shocks are effecting the brain.

They wouldn't tell me why they're running the experiment.
 
Having been on the receiving end of more electrical shocks than I'd care to admit, 15 seconds is a LONG time to take a shock. Impress the chick by flying her somewhere or something. Anyone can sit there and get their heart fried. There are only 600,000 or so of us in the country. You're already special. :D

If flying doesn't impress her, but taking shocks for an hour does, then this chick is too high maintenance.
