Avionics thefts- Chicago edition

Well ... they could say "hello" to your new found friend!

If these thieves are as experienced and organized as they appear, they may also be armed too. So, a gun battle might ensue when confronted. I’m for CCW and self defense, so don’t take that comment wrong.

How about a concerted, proactive effort for the local governments that run the airports to take the issue more seriously and increase deterrents. Heck, if insurance companies participate in some funding to pay for whatever is an effective deterrent, they might just save money compared to payout claims. Or, maybe this type of theft is a tiny drop to them.

I don’t think ‘there is no solution’ is the right approach. You can’t prevent everything, but you can highly discourage it. If the comment about Garmin units being tied to a particular airplane is true, than that’s a prime example.

I kid, I kid - probably cost as much to repair the panel damage as replacing the avionics they stole.

Most of that stuff comes out really easily with a few turns of an Allen wrench. Experienced thieves would know this and go that route vs a recip saw or something.

Therein lies the problem. In northern Illinois the local governments would never consider a proactive effort to deter crime. Often times it feels like they're doing quite the reverse, by increasing the threshold for what constitutes a jail-able offense and getting rid of would-be deterrents like high $ bail (we're going to cashless bail as a state). This is why we very much have a catch-and-release systems here in IL, which is also why I advocate for firearm ownership. Though, bravado aside, I would very much like to live the rest of my life without getting into a gun battle :)

I had a cheap radio stolen from my Porsche 911 Targa at ATL. The radio was maybe $150 new, doubt it was worth more than $30 on the street. The Targa top on the other hand was worth about $10k and could have removed easily once they were inside the car. Not the brightest bulbs in the box.

Asking for a friend, anyone seen any good deals on avionics ;)

Well while you all take on that crew in the Range Rover (you should expect them to be armed, this is Chicago after all), I’ll take on this feller

My airport has county police, city police, state police and the Air Guard all based there. Not worried...

I got 8 grand for a 750txi for whichever of you miscreants did it :D

Love the guns idea. Gonna camp out on that tiedown line Yosemite Sam?
Well, there's a couch in the hangar... And I was answering what to do IF you ran into them.

The first picture of the range Rover appeared to have someone in the passenger seat. I would not be surprised if their was a scout car earlier in the day...

Sarcasm aside, let's say you saw someone stealing a GPS from a plane on the tiedown line. From your hangar. And you drew bead and shot them dead.

In even the reddest of red states, is that ever a legal scenario? I only see a murder rap coming from that.

(I support the sentiment 100% btw :D )

Yulp! As far as I've been taught, if there is not a direct threat of grave bodily injury or death then you cannot use deadly force. Now if you confront the suspect and they produce a weapon then the scenario changes ...

They would make a fortune as AP's vs the month long estimates from other shops to do avionics work! :)

I kid, I kid - probably cost as much to repair the panel damage as replacing the avionics they stole. I remember when I lived in Chicago car radios were being stolen at an alarming rate. One person wrote a note on car that read "No Radio". Came back to smashed window, where the perp scribbled on the note "Get one!"
Reportedly no other damage to the planes they can get inside without a hammer and pry bar. Couple screws and unclip a harness.

2 things happen if they see a gun. Hands go up. Or they produce a weapon. My trigger finger doesn't start itching until scenario 2.

Forget that. Just go midevil on their A's, using the bandsaw, drill press, and welder in your buddy's hangar.
Somebody has been watching that Dahmer series a little too closely.

Well Oklahoma did just have 4 guys shot and then partially dismembered with power tools (parts being dumped in the river) 2 weeks ago after what was likely an attempted burglary of a salvage yard, lol. Not much of a stretch

Or if they know the law... and career criminals probably do... they walk away knowing you can't shoot them.

I'm not confident they'd remain that calm cool and collected.

First World problems. The Supreme Court finally forced the political backwater where I live to issue carry permits. And they’ve issued a few. But tomorrow the Assembly is expected to easily pass a bill prohibiting carry on all public and most private property, in all means of transportation including an individuals private car, or in any place where people gather.

Depends upon the state.

(2) A person is justified in using or threatening to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that using or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. A person who uses or threatens to use deadly force in accordance with this subsection does not have a duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground if the person using or threatening to use the deadly force is not engaged in a criminal activity and is in a place where he or she has a right to be.

Forcible felony.—“Forcible felony” means treason; murder; manslaughter; sexual battery; carjacking; home-invasion robbery; robbery; burglary; arson; kidnapping; aggravated assault; aggravated battery; aggravated stalking; aircraft piracy; unlawful throwing, placing, or discharging of a destructive device or bomb; and any other felony which involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against any individual.

Not saying it won’t end up in court and could go either way, but the situation might not be as clear cut in some states as in others. Laws vary. And a jury will see a difference between picking them off with a rifle from 100 yards away versus a direct confrontation with a pistol in your pocket.

Have you considered leaving the PRNJ and seeking asylum in the United States?

Illinois is about as anti-gun ownership as they come. The county where I live as well as crook county, the States attorneys are the only ones in the state that supports the law of ending cash bail.

There's a reason I like shotguns over handguns for private property protection. Pull the plug, you got 5 shots, large spray pattern, and a fair chance it's not fatal. But you make your point.

That is the same reaction to desegregation. No matter what the Supreme Court says, they're going to continue the way the always have. It's not a winning strategy, but they are helpless to change.

You should check that at the range. I thought there was a large spray from a shotgun, but at a range of 10-15 ft common for CQB, the pattern is rather small. We did it as part of our training.

Open carry in NM except for a few certain areas.

Think public schools, casinos and places where alcohol is the primary source of sales, for example. Our preacher that just recently retired asked a few certain members to carry in the church, And we do have a defense plan in place in case a rogue shooter interrupts the service.

Cylinder choke is 19" pattern at 25'

In all seriousness, I've got better things to do than to wait at the hangar waiting for someone to enter. Now, a bear trap just inside the door wouldn't be a bad idea, but I'd forget about it

I’m retiring next summer. I’ve been saying since I got here that on my last day, I’m driving the moving van to work and leaving it parked out front, headed west, engine running. That’s how fast I’m out of here.

I recommend Texas. Florida is much too crowded.

Same here in IL but I have about 15 years to go and the place may completely fall apart before that so I will probably split in a few years ..
