Way back in 2003, I had a real mixed experience with Anywhere Map. It was uber cutting edge with features you couldn't find anywhere else (oops, no pun intended), but it was buggy as hell. It seemed that they never Beta tested new releases and, as I remember it, was extremely unstable. Memory makes the good better and the bad worse, so I'm sure it wasn't that bad, but I did swear off of anything other than commercially available hardware ever since.

I have a Garmin 396 and love that it always simply works ... but the value proposition sucks compared to software options that use commercial hardware. I've recently found Foreflight to be an excellent option, but only run it on my iPhone and haven't even seen it on the iPad. Just today, I got an e-mail from Anywhere map advertising their new DeX tablet solution.

So, question to those of you using Anywhere Map. How stable and reliable is the software? Are you generally satisfied? How would you compare it to other options you've seen / used? It seems to me that the iPad will be a category killer and that Foreflight and WingX are likely stealing a lot of traditional Anywhere Map customers ... am I off base with this thought process?

I have it but my software is a bit old. I read on the Red board for a few years how a few had problems but I did not. Mine would lockup and require a reboot from time to time but I loved it. It was every bit as capable and accurate as the bizjet style FMS I use. It had about every fix known to man and would do amazing things. I did not get the plates or the weather so I can't comment on that. They had a good user forum to discuss things. It was not for the technophobe, as you had to do some downloading and manipulating stuff on your home computer to get it configured. It worked all across the US, into Canada and even last December into Mexico.
The screen is now a bit small for my old eyes, it needed an external gps and the battery was not good enough for a flight so it needed wires.
So the Ipad2 with G3 is now its replacement and it has fixed these two biggies for me. I logged 7.5hrs with the ipad on Sunday and it did famously, and still had 30% battery left.
I might put the old awm up for sale if I could get a few bucks for it.

I am very happy with the software and features. I think that it outranks Garmin. The fact that it's on a full-on Windows machine is also nice, as that gives me more versatility. I use it for updating the GPS database in my Aztec.

The only downside is that the Samsung Q1 that I have the software on has a hard drive that's going out. I have a new hard drive that I need to get installed.

If I were to get something now, though, it'd be an iPad.

Iflyforfun,
I have been using Anywhere since they began. The IPAQ solution began badly but over the years they worked out the bugs. I have worked my way to a Samsung Q1 which fits on the yoke of my Mooney pretty well. The op system is XP and it works OK but the sunlight washes out the Samsung screen. I flew to Panama and back this winter and my copilot brought along his 696. The 696 is a more pilot friendly machine and a much better screen. I am happy with the Anywhere but if were starting again maybe I would buy something else. I would say that updates are less expensive but the updates can take forever (maxnav, Pocket Plates, Map, High and Low Enroutes). I would wait to buy till you can see the hardware. Screen readability is about the most important part of the system so get a good look before you invest. Good Luck!

I'm not really shopping, but I've always been intrigued by Anywhere Map. It came on the scene at the time I was just really getting active as a pilot (I'd had my license for years but could only afford to window shop until 2003 or so). At the time, I had the Ipaq solution and it was a real PITA, but had amazing capability. I had a King 89 GPS and a KNS-80 RNAV in the plane and the Ipaq was just amazing. Foreflight today has nothing (from a features perspective) on Anywhere Map from 2003. From a reliability, usability and stability perspective though, I moved on and wondered if they were still a serious player in the market. I saw their recent hardware solution and thought I'd seek out the groups opinion. Seems they're a bit of a fringe player now ... too bad, as they really did have the first mover advantage back in 2003 or so.
