Chinook ground resonance gone awry.

I like the one from the back a little better.

You can definitely see the engine mounts giving up.

Another ground resonance, only not a test.

Yikes! So the recovery is putting it into a hover?

Yeah if you catch it early enough. If it's at the point that damage is done from the initial touchdown, then rolling the throttle off and pulling the rotor brake (if equipped) would be best.

Really it's a rare occurrence and usually because of poor maintenance on lead lag dampers or gear strut / skids. It's a specific check on the 407 to check the aft tube pivot beam on preflight. Basically push the side of the fuse and see that it is rocking back and forth on the beam vs the beam moving with the fuse.

Almost happened on the set of a McGyver episode... about 38 seconds in video.

Pilot actually leaves with door swinging... to avoid the Ground Res from destroying it

Ground resonance helped me get my helicopter rating.
I came to my checkride ready to be grilled, but had never flown in or even seen up-close a multi-bladed (3+ blades prerequisite for GR) rotor helicopter. But the DPE for some reason decided to spend much of the oral discussing GR and its intricacies, and fortunately I was able to cheat my way out of it. By the time we were done discussing GR, it was time to fly (my 2-bladed mast-bumping Robbie).

Another reason why helicopters should be banned!

Never understood why they didn't just put the prop where it belongs and slap some wings on it. What a bunch of clowns!
