    Chihuahua approved landing

DOOD, I'm in a rented Piper Archer :) I've had up to 24 in this particular aircraft. My copilot was passed out on the seat next to me and didn't make an appearance in this one.

    "Landing Fee"

Caldwell (KCDW) tells me it's charged by the county - I think I'm going to start sticking to Morristown, FTC is very dog friendly and on a rescue flight when I'm already shelling out $500 for airplane rental, a landing fee is a real gut punch.

    Chihuahua approved landing

Notice how her ears perk up as the stall horn goes off.

    Run-up on taxi?

I don't do it, won't even consider it.

    Suggestions for practicing crosswind landings

I wouldn't be too concerned at 9 hours in - get a grip on everything else, then work towards it as you gain experience. Crosswind landings were one of the most difficult aspects for me to wrap my head around; I was fortunate to train at an airport that almost always had xwinds to some degree...

Picking Up Flight Following - What is easy for you?

Once you are assigned a squawk code and acknowledged on radar, they've accepted your request and will provide advisories, until they terminate the following for workload reasons or you terminate it; in one rare example I've been under a FF from Potomac, and they forgot about me and I eventually...

Picking Up Flight Following - What is easy for you?

I fly in the PHL Bravo a lot, so I always ask for flight advisories after departing my home airport outside of the B. However I never try to cut directly across the B, and know by now they will vector me out to MXE or likewise to avoid approach and departure traffic. Flight advisories are a...

    Airplane owned by non-profit?

I'd suggest consult with multiple attorneys, as not one will have the exact same answer - there is a lot of grey areas that can magically become crystal clear if something bad happens. The best advice I received was from a local attorney that also helped found the local Angel Flight chapter...

    Why climb for ice?

You should be aware of the weather in your flight area prior to entering; The one and only icing encounter I've had resulted from a temporary low warm front passing over the airport, from the south, with light rain; upon departure I headed north, through warm air and light moisture, into colder...

    Amusing controller commet

Potomac forgot about me once on a VFR trip to NC. I was pretty far south and never had a hand off; I could still hear them, tried to raise them a few times with no reply. I wasn't that far from my destination by that point so I squawked 1200 and changed freqs for the field. Only time it's ever...

    Airplane owned by non-profit?

As a non profit that flies rescue animals, I'd advise to make sure you are well versed on the IRS and FAA side of the house; there are lots of variables involved with this. We do not yet have a dedicated aircraft however that is the next step. Do your due diligence and talk with as many...

    Talking to ATC

It takes time - when I first achieved my cert I would avoid talking to ATC out of fear of bumbling what I was trying to say. I would file a flight plan with foreflight instead, rather then talk to them. Then I forgot to close a flight plan one day and had the dreaded missed call from Lockheed...

Am I oldschool for prefering to train on the steam guages?

I prefer steam gauges - I really do not care for glass cockpits; the more reliant we become on technology the less skill we develop; that said if you are going as a career pilot you probably don't have much choice.

    Legality of taking out seats?

I recently went through this with my local FBO - we researched the POH and there is no verbiage to indicate that anything needs to be done for the rear seat removal; this is for a PA-28-181. The rear seats remove easily in 5 minutes, simply pop up and out; I just subtract the weight of the...

    Question.. Private or Commercial

You should be able to accept 50% (pro rata) share of the cost of the flight. Her expensing the fuel is probably not legal, because you are not a commercial operator.

    What would you buy/fly?

C182, perfect in so many ways for a dedicated animal rescue aircraft.

    Calculus Aviation Project

If in controlled airspace it's determined by ATC, unless you are cleared at your discretion. If flying GA in uncontrolled airspace, it's based on published pattern altitude of the airport you are landing at, factoring in your airspeed, groundspeed, wind direction, and distance from the airport...

    Russian Airbus down

ISIS could claim it and yet based on the Russian airline industry records people may not believe it. Although from what was reported, this particular airline has a decent service record, however this particular aircraft suffered a significant tail strike earlier in it's life. I remember an...

Well, looks like there's one guy who needs to make a laundry run

Agreed. I've had a 172/182 cross directly in front of me like that twice now. Once I had to take evasive action. I don't know what the guy was doing, we were at around 4500 and he had full flaps in, passed right across my nose, guessing he never even had a clue I was there.
