    Cool Tools

They advertise using it to repair hyd. Hoses. I might do that if i were way out in the bush, and had to get home. not while I am in my hangar. I've seen it do a water tight seal on two significantly different sized tygon tubes. Because of the mechanical action on how it pulls the wire, it will...

    Cool Tools

I am always looking out for cool tools/ tricks to make things easier doing maintenance or related. What thing do you use to get jobs done quicker? My tools are mostly maintenance related, but feel free to share other ideas too. My favorite is a about a 4 in piece of 2" dia PVC pipe cut in half...

15 or more seconds from pulling master to power

Just because it says X doesn't mean it's not legal to install. We had a Alternator on a Cessna U206 that said Ford I believe. It was on a 135 certificate, and yes the right part. I've seen Chrysler Alternators on planes. R44 helicopters have Fram Air filters. The real point is to make sure that...

Two weeks in Alaska - Bush, Floats and Skis

If you are going to fly there, while around Denali is pretty awesome, may I recommend the Lake Clark Pass and Katmai National park as places to see as well. I lived there for 3 years. I know of bear camps that were using skis at a couple thousand feet MSL tops through mid May. Have fun.

    Very light oil leak?

If you have access to a black light, that can help locate a leak. I used one regularly at my last place of work from a florescent penetrant setup. Synthetic oils show up best. Avgas will show a little due to the lead. Jet fuel won't show at all. You could also do a very thorough degrease and...

KAZO - Air Zoo. Anyone ever been to it?

Yeah, that'd be about right. And the paint doesn't have to be right stuff, just the right color. I'll just say that I wouldn't trust some of those tail hooks. 4" PVC pipe is a little weak in my mind.

    Fueling Practices

The airline code is the one that doesn't allow the resale of fuel that has been in an aircraft. GA aircraft could, if the person doing the resale wasn't holding to, or being held by a third party to the requirements of the airline code. I don't know the exact reference right now. The issue is...

    Fueling Practices

Everybody is going to have different answers depending on location an mission. If you are an owner you have a choice. Renters generally don't, which is a mixed bag. You can walk to the plane and fly away knowing that you have full fuel with out calling a truck. It's problematic if you want to...

KAZO - Air Zoo. Anyone ever been to it?

I think it's a good place to visit. I went as an A&P student. Our class was given a scavenger hunt to do while there. It was looking for errors or anomalies in the way things were put together. We even found a few the instructor hadn't seen yet. Most were minor details. We did get a tour from...

    Instrument written questions

Wait.... You mean that the FAA has a test that the right answer isn't actually right? (Please note the extreme sarcasm in the above statement due to personal experience.)

    tie down ropes

If you are going to use flat strap material instead of a rope for a tie down, put 2 or 3 twists in it. It won't vibrate in the wind like it would if it were flat when you pull it tight. Pull them tight but don't crank on them. The non rachet type, with just the simple teeth that grab the strap...

    Oil filter cutter recommendation

I've seen that cutter. Never used it. Always used the ones with a pipe cutter wheel. It'd be nice to have a cutter that you don't have to keep replacing the cutting wheel. Also, as an additional tip, instead of taking a box cutter to the paper and cutting it from the metal frame you can pull...

    Looking for guys with experience

Looking for some thoughts/advice from the more experienced guys on here. (In the real world, not just cyber space.) Right now I am working as a heli mechanic in bush Alaska. Currently the only mech for a company that's looking to hire at least one more. (Email me if you want to work up here and...

    Evaluating potential purchase

I flew a couple of 172S's from VA to Chicago, MI, GA and the like a lot. On those xc trips, I planned for 115kts true, and 8.5 gal/hr. I went high every time. As high as I could. Sometimes I would have a slightly higher TAS, never more than 120, (though one time I was getting GS of 170+.) Every...

    Prop "TBO" - Opinions?

McCauley's have the red dye in them, and as another already mentioned, if you see red, the thing needs work. I don't think anybody else is doing the dye, but I could be wrong. Hartzells are supposed to be lubed at 100/hr annuals I think. I don't remember the actual frequency off the top of my...

    Africa flying

I spent a few months in Mozambique and Uganda doing maintenance for a humanitarian company. South Africa is JAA. JAA and FAA don't play nice together. I've thought about trying to get my JAA licenses a couple of times. It'd basically be starting over for me. Granted, this was for commercial...

    Cluster in Colorado

So you can land in the GA part of SEA. If you were a terrorist, how would you get over to the 121 side? Having flown into BWI and MDW in a 172, plus a number of other C and B air spaces in a larger plane, almost every airport has the GA aircraft parked on the other side of the airport. Across...

Safety/survival gear every pilot should have!

I like most of the list. I'd tweak a few things, but then, some of it is personal preference. Also the biggest factor for what goes in your survival kit is location as most people are aware. I carry no water in my survival kit. Where I am at, I'd have to be busted up pretty bad to not be able to...

    Cluster in Colorado

Thanks for the replies. Through all the various responses, I think I begin to understand a little. I understand that most people in the 'security' field don't know what they are doing. Granted, I'm no expert. And I do think TSA is mostly a waste, but it's not too much for the government to...

    Cluster in Colorado

No, there is another requirement I can't remember what it is off the top of my head, that calls for different levels of airports. The airspace tends to be an easy way, to distinguish between say a dirt strip in bush alaska, and Reagan National.
