Beech 1900 down, let this be a lesson to you all.

A word of caution on synthetic vision. I've had a G1000 with SVT in my DA40 for the last 5 years. It's fantastic for providing situational awareness on approaches. It also makes flying approaches much easier and thus I believe less mistake prone unless your flying depends on SVT for a safe...

Story: "X-Plane creator being sued by 'patent troll' for patent infringement"

As a small business owner, I have been sued twice for bs patent infringement cases by unethical lawyers and their unethical clients. Each incident occurred in a separate business in two very different industries. Both times I prevailed in court. Both cases where an enormous distraction for me...

    Flying the Magenta Line

I'm a child of the magenta line. I got both my PPL and instrument rating on a plane with a G1000. I would never fly the moving map on an approach. Practicing partial panel with the AHRS inop, I'll use the track as part of my scan but that's the only time I'll incorporate the MFD into an...

How Do You Feel About Night XCs

At least out here in the Rockies, I treat every night flight as IMC because even on a clear, full moon night you can't always find a reliable horizon. Would you rather have a second piston engine or a chute on a night flight? Notice how I didn't say a Cirrus. I don't want to open up a...

Most amazing flight OF YOUR LIFE ??

1.1 hours in the back of an F16 trying not to puke my guts out. I doubt anything in my life will come close. My favorite flight with me at the stick is an early morning summer flight from Ogden to Bozeman. Over Bear Lake, Jackson, the Tetons, Yellowstone and then up the Madison, Gallatin or...

GA Plane of the Year 2012 goes to DA40

I can't believe they are that expensive. My partners and I grossly over paid for my '08 XLS with SVT, TAS and every option except DME. I think it was around $330k. As far as I know, there is really no difference between a brand new one and mine. In any case, I doubt I could get $230k for it...

    Never Again -- Parallel Runways

I recognize you are a student pilot and I have no idea what kind of avionics you are using but as you get more advanced, you will learn how to load a precision approach for a runway (if available) which will provide one more check that you are lined up for the correct runway. I wouldn't feel...

It sucks and it hurts but is it illegal?

I'm the OP. Just to close this out, after writing the CEO of Delta, I received a refund for the price of the trip. My mistake here was taking the seat in the first place and not speaking with the FA before I sat down. Never again.

    Hockey is back!

As a life-long NY Rangers and hockey fan, I feel I have a moral obligation to boycott hockey for some period of time. It is the only to postpone the next lockout/strike from happening.

First Plane and Cirrus SR20 Gen 1/2/3 related questions.

Of course not. You just need to buy a more expensive plane. Something that burns Jet A or a big twin. That way the $750/month will seem like pennies compared to what you spend per hour to fly it.

First Plane and Cirrus SR20 Gen 1/2/3 related questions.

I'd sit in one first to make sure you are comfortable, but a DA40 is almost always a better first plane than an SR20 and you can get a >2008 one with all the bells and whistles for your budget.

    Who Went Flying Today? 1/1/2013

Went up with a CFII today and did 6 practice approaches etc. Makes it really easy to keep track of 6 month currency requirements.

    Top 5 aviation movies

Up until a few weeks ago, my stuff has been in storage for many months. I plugged in my DVD player for the first time last night and inside was a copy of Dark Blue World. First PM gets it if anyone is interested.

What Are Your Aviation Goals For 2013?

    1) Stay Alive 2) Having accomplished 1, not have an accident/incident "I have a number for you to call" scenario 3) Accomplish 1&2 by a combination of proficiency and the discipline to maintain a high margin of safety which may mean canceling, postponing, departing early or rerouting even...

Taking off VFR from a Class B Primary Airport

I have flown VFR out of LAS several times Your first call is to clearance delivery. At LAS, they want the usual info plus they want to know your desired on course heading and altitude. For me this is direct MMM which I think is a 032 degree heading and 9,500 feet. Most often you will get 19L...

    G1000 PFD Failure

I'm sure you have done this but make sure the totally obvious is ruled out by toggling the red reversionary button and make sure it is not accidentally pressed. Also if you were not the last person to fly it check that someone did not dim the screen all the way to simulate failure.

End of the world - what would you do?

Only the blonde ones..... I'm not sure what I would do if the world was going to end but I have this fantasy that if I know I'm PIC for the last time, I want to fly through a TFR so I can have a fighter escort on my last flight before I surrender my ticket.

It sucks and it hurts but is it illegal?

My mistake here was not saying something to the FA as soon as I saw the situation. Never again. I fly commercial a lot. Over a million miles on Delta alone and I can't remember the last time I wasn't Platinum or Diamond. I find a certain zen mindset is needed to survive this lifestyle so I'm...

It sucks and it hurts but is it illegal?

I write this from seat 5D on a Skywest CRJ700 cruising along at 39,000 feet and 428 knots according to Foreflight. 5D is a window. Sitting next to me in 5C is a morbidly obese guy at 350+ pounds. His mass takes up at least 1/3 of my seat. Is this legal? I'm looking through the FARs but I...

Which Books on Weather do you like?

+2. If you only had one resource to pick, this would be it. Collins et al are helpful for getting a big picture of what to watch out for and how it all works. Scott's site answers the question "can I take this flight and what should I expect" better than anything out there.
