    VA airport recommendations

I second Blue Ridge (KMTV) as a nice stop. New surface on their 5000x100 runway as of May. Usually go there 2-3 times a month for lunch and fuel, which is some of the cheapest in the area. They just repaved the entire runway back in May, but will be closed next week (from their Facebook...

    People say the dumbest stuff

Nah, got one better. Government contracts be damned....flight from Tokyo to Honolulu via......Seattle. :dunno: Not kidding either, that was how our routing went last month thanks to our gov’t travel agency. :mad2: :mad3: :incazzato: Brian

    American Eagle has honesty issues...

Generally speaking, if they cancel for MX, the airline is on the hook for accommodations if you have to stay overnight. If it's for weather, the airline is not on the hook and you are free to stay in the terminal or pay out-of-pocket for a hotel. I believe it's somewhere in that mile long...

    Transponders

I had an NGT-9000 installed in the Bonanza in May 2017. After a year in use and just over 150 flight hours, the touch screens failed. L3/Lynx was fantastic with getting a new unit sent to me over night (still under warranty thankfully....) and I was back up in less than a week with zero issues...

Couldn't use the SkyBeacon on my wingtips due to the design, so going with the Stratus ESG in two weeks. Looking forward to the new Xpndr. Cheers, Brian

Fly-In at HBI on June 8

Just a smidge off on your weblink for the info. https://ncaviationmuseumhalloffame.com/index.html I'm scheduled to go to the Beech fly-in in Knoxville on Saturday, but the weather has a lot to say about that. Will see what plays out if the weather near KDKX gets crappy, but Asheboro is...

    Skyvector difference between charts

Great catch and it is because of the stitching of the maps together. The text box falls in the area that gets overlapped between the Cincinnati and Atlanta sectionals. I just checked the sectional map in FlyQ and it has the same problem - text box is not there. On the flip side, I looked at...

I thought you kept those at the hangar.... o_O

Database subscriptions, etc. when changing planes?

Jeppesen has always transferred my subscriptions for free and given credit if the old database is more expensive than the new one. I went from a 430W to a GTN650 in the new plane and got a small credit back. Sirius XM was just a matter of transferring to the new device/antenna. I think it's a...

    Class C transition

Most of the time in my area, the same controller is working both frequencies.* That is why you sometimes hear a controller having a conversation with a ghost, i.e. the other aircraft is on the other freq. Even when I was in Reno, the same NorCal controller would be working both North and South...

    IPad Cooling

I use an Xnaut for my Mini and love it. I have never had one shut down in 5+ years of flying with it in direct sunlight with Beech and Mooney aircraft. I have had it shut down on me when flying with just a basic Ram mount however. I wasn't going to build my own, so bought one when they were...

    Moral check?

No, I think you did just fine. Just means that it was over priced to begin with and the estimator has room to negotiate. You just happen to find the right combination. I say good job and you earned that extra $500.... ;) Any negotiating is considered good form (in some countries it's...

What / how many different types have you flown?

C150 C152 C172 C177 C182 Mooney M20E (300+ hours as owner) Beech Sierra Beech E33A Bonanza (350+ hours as owner) Beech Travel Air (70+ hours and climbing as owner) Piper Seminole Piper Tomahawk Piper Archer Piper Arrow Grumman Tiger I need to get out more, but then again, I like what I...

How many people would be grounded

Last time I went to the OH DMV, I was in and out in 30 minutes. Only took that long because my son had to take the test to get his learners permit. We were the only people in there... :D Prior to that adventure, I was able to get my DL renewed in under 20 minutes. I was #3 in line. I will...

How many people would be grounded

Interesting question. Suppose that the DOT made it mandatory for every person to have a Class III equivalent to get issued a drivers license, what would the initial failure rate be (basically a first visit failure before the other avenues open to get it, like an SI, etc). No idea, but would be...

    Should Burke Lakefront be closed?

Signature is the only FBO and $7 a gallon gas is the result. Add in their "handling fees" and you have a very wallet unfriendly place. Don't care how many cookies they hand out or how friendly their CS reps are. ;) Cheers, Brian

How are you getting traffic and weather info?

Hmmm, the Lynx NGT-9000 is a good unit as I put one in my Bonanza before selling it....but after having to get it replaced under warranty for the touch screen failing (Lynx Customer Service was awesome) and the wifi module continuously dropping the feed to my iPad at random times, I decided NOT...

    ADS-B Rebates all used up

I'm one of those "rich" multi owners, so it's not available to us... Never mind that my previous Bonanza cost almost twice what I paid for the TA...

    What sucks about your airplane?

Smaller baggage door and cramped baggage area. Wish it was stretched a bit more. Beech took care of that with later models so it was a conscious decision on my part when I bought it and I've learned to live with it for all the other good. Brian
