    Cirrus down in the Bahamas

There are no good ways to know. Law enforcement and the military have tried for decades to simulate the stress of imminent death or intense crisis. There are some ways to approximate it. By physical stress, by creating some VERY realistic scenario based simulations, etc. But in the end...

Bill to Simplify Certification Passes Congress

I can't afford an STec autopilot based on airframe value, but I'll put a Trio or Trutrack in the week after the regs take effect. The 46 year old engine instruments will get replaced with a Dynon EMS. A Dynon (or similar) EFIS goes in the first year. Yeah, I'm excited about this.

PA-32-300 is 200 past TBO- poor climb and T/O Roll

Not a 6 owner, but I have owned a Piper for several years and chased similar issues. First and foremost, check your tach. Your RPM is the primary variable in performance. Mine was way off, replaced it with an EI electronic tach. Check rigging. Pipers can be WAY out of rig without...

    Tower closed or not?

I know the airport in question has an ASOS, not ATIS. But, FYI, at my place, the ATIS changes to an AWOS when the tower closes (as in it's a computer voice give an "Automated Weather Observation", not a human reading "ATIS Information Charlie"). If you're hearing the AWOS, the tower is...

Watch out POA, you may be next...

On a recent operation, a bunch of folks brought their various MiFi devices. One was named "FBI Surveillance Unit 3", another was something similar. The security folks got a worked up for a few moments when they fired up their laptops and looked for the WiFi access point....

Preventive Maintenance - What to do?

There's your problem :mad2: I went through two Kelleys in three years. There are a few common things that will strand you. Battery, mags, starter, alternator, and primer (In some birds you can start by pumping the throttle, mine will not). A Concorde battery will cover that...

This guy might be able to offer pointers on proper touch-and-go's

At Denver, you could make 4 T&Gs for each 360* turn. http://vfrmap.com/?type=vfrc&lat=39.862&lon=-104.673&zoom=12 They'd have to divert the airliners, but......

Transitioning to a Piper from a Cessna?

The overhead crank means a clear footwell across the aircraft. Also, when making a large trim change, it's one continuous spin of the crank, vs multiple swipes on the trim wheel that only moves a quarter on a rev at a time.

    iPad Frustration

Non glare screen protector makes all the difference in the world. It goes from unusable to very effective. I bought 50 IPads for outdoor public safety use, every one came with a Zagg non-glare screen protector on it...

Transitioning to a Piper from a Cessna?

Coming from a 152, the Cherokee will feel huge (not a function of brand, same is true going from a 152 to a 172). Otherwise a light plane is a light plane, the only differences are: Direct nose steering Rides better in bumps Oleos are more forgiving of botched landings Fuel pump on...

What kind of TFR is this at Grand Forks?

It's at Grand Forks AFB, for "Special Security reasons", and says: "EXCEPT AS SPECIFIED BELOW AND/OR UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY ATC: ALL AIRCRAFT ENTERING OR EXITING THE TFR MUST BE ON A DISCRETE CODE ASSIGNED BY AN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL (ATC) FACILITY. AIRCRAFT MUST BE SQUAWKING THE DISCRETE CODE AT...

    Owner maintenance

Bingo. Someone earlier talked about an inspector catching the pilot removing a prop. What are they going to do? Ground the plane. It's unairworthy. How does it get airworthy? An A&P installs the prop and signs it off as airworthy. Except that the inspector didn't have to do...

Suggestions wanted...FXE to Key West or FXE to Tampa

I'm from Tampa. Why would someone go to Tampa when they can go Key West? TFR may impact your choice, but the scenery to EWY is a lot better than flying over flat central FL going to Tampa. IF you go to Tampa, go to Peter O. Knight (TPF). Much prettier approach and departure. Just make...

Black hole approach to unfamiliar rural airport

Personally, when flying to unfamiliar airports at night, I do a midfield crosswind at known TPA. The midfield and known location puts me at the centerline of the runway at known alt, so I can "set" my perspective of the lights (wider runways seem closer, narrow seem farther away, flying over...
