    More questions re: autogas

FWIW the 10-3878 is a correct carb but not always the best one. I seems to vary from one engine to the next. I am in Jasper AB winding up a month of touring. I'll be back in FL on Wednesday and lookat the carb options.

    More questions re: autogas

You will find that the STC for mogas in the 180 does not make it eligible to run 87 oct therefore the ethanol free 80 oct will not be legal or a good idea to try in your 180. With regard to your CHT you probably have a 10-3878 carburetor which is often too lean for the 172 installation. Charlie...

Has the red board been put to sleep? I could not find it in the new format?

    Field overhaul on my IO-540's?

FWIW the IO-540 in a Comanche costs about $4K less to overhaul than one from an Aerostar. The new cylinder charge for the Aerostar engine is $5,400 vs $2,400 for the Comanche engine.

    Field overhaul on my IO-540's?

Yon only get what you pay for -maybe. The parts and vendor services to do those 540's COSTS us over $20K with no labor, overhead or warranty figured in. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

GAMI lean test weirdness: EGT rise LOP?

The second rise in EGT when way LOP is standard. IIRC it is due to retardation of the flame pattern. The spread is somewhat high and GAMI's would fix that. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    Any catch with new pump?

The new pump is taller so itwill be positioned lower behind the engine. In some instllations. I do not recalll a problem with the Cardinal. Find a Tempest dealer and order the correct part number overhaul exchange. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

Heart of Texas Aircraft Engines, anybody ever use them?

You usually get what you pay for -seldom more. Most of the "cheap" shops base price is less than we pay for parts and vendor services. I wonder how they do that?????? Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

Anyone used Pacific Oil Cooler Services?

WE use them for all our coolers. Check with them for new. Some are not that much more than overhauling. I replaced mine at 41 years. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    cessna 150 carb troubles

FWIW 26-2650 static sounds high. Maybe the whole problem is the tach? Carburetor problems are typically not intermittant. If it is running smoothly but shaking and short RPM check for a soft hydraulic unit. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

aluminum / nickel in cessna 150 oil sample

Not exciting readings. If it has ECI Nickel cylinders it could be a bit of piston scuffing causing both readings. Resample in 25 hours along with a filter or screen inspection. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    Engine Overhaul Southern CA

Thanks Tony! FWIW the parts, accessories and vendor services like overhauling the case and grinding the crankcan COST us close to $12K Before we charge anything for labor or heaven forbid profit. You get what you pay for. The shops doing cost cutter overhauls probably make mre money than we...

    Cessna 182 O-470U Questions

IMHO the low compression O-470's go beyond TBO more commonly than the "U". I've long said that a 1500 hour TBO "R" is much more likely to run 2,000 hours than a supposed 2,000 hour "U". An "R" run at 2,200 -2,300 RPM is smoother than a "U". No scientific data or statistics just my opinion but I...

    Engine alterations

IIRC an O-300C is the same as a except it has the direct drive starter operated by a solenoid. You could convert the D to C on the old model conversion SB and if the Sktech direct drive starter is on their STC you are home free on the engine. If the aircraft TC requires a D that would require...

    OH costs

We have overhauled a number of 4 cylinder Lycomings with ALL NEW PARTS but they still carried forward the original total time. Charlie Melot Zephyr Engines

    OH costs

I don't think so. It would require authorization from the engine manufacturer and neither would enfranchise an overhaul shop to compete in the magical zero time market.
