Data in Mexico, Guatemala & Caribbean

I have flown the Caribbean and Latin America for many years. I buy a Jepp trip kit for the areas I am operating in. I was using a KLN 94 and had no data except for US possessions. I just put a 750 and declined the Jepp data due to unlock costs. Jepp has the data in paper which is kind of a...

    KX-155 voltage change

Jim, The change to 8.33 will occur when the NextGen folks want to turn on the text messaging system. The freqs for the system are interspersed in the VHF sprectum. Years ago the FAA asked for more sprectum from the FCC and the FCC said no. Only way to accommodate text messaging was to go to...

    KX-155 voltage change

Here is a more important question concerning the 155A. The current model is 25khz freq. spacing. In the near future we will have to transition to 8.33khz spacing. The 155A/165A which are sold in Europe have 8.33 spacing. How can the spacing be changed on the 25khz radios. I know it can be...

    KLN 900 Database Update Question

I have a KLN 94 and the USA database includes Latin America and the Caribbean excluding Cuba. The Wingman website is not very informative so you might call them for clarification. The further away you get from the US the skinnier the data is. You do not get all the SIDs and STARS. The US...

    PoA Colorado Meetup

I got to Leadville this morning. Ramp was filled and the breakfast was good. I would say a successful fly-in. Leave peeping was about average.

    PoA Colorado Meetup

I heard a rumor today that the Leadville breakfast was moved up a week so it is this Saturday. Might be worth a call to the manager before you set your plans in stone.

A retired airline pilot built a Lancair IV and flew it out to Guam through Hawaii. He turned around and flew non stop to Jacksonville, Fl (36 hour leg). Started out with 360 gals and landed with 5. He then flew over both poles for an around the world record. I forget all the details but both...

Looking to Fly to KEGE from Detroit Area

I am not sure I understand your route. If I were coming from Detroit, I would head to Ft. Collins, find a low point, cross the divide, head to Walden then Kremmling then to a point north of Vail that looks low and cross over to Vail. Get some old sectionals and a yard stick and lay the route...

trying to book IFR slot for OSH, but I only have Netscape 3...

The most reliable way to get an IFR slot into KOSH is to book a charter with NetJet. I am told they control many of the slots.

    Colorado Pilots: I need advice.

The only thing I would add is to stay out of Glenwood Springs. Not an impossible place to use but challenging even for the experienced. I would plan Vail and consider Rifle as an alternate. If you land at either don't forget your wallet (best to call and get en estimate). Enroute portion...

    More from the TSA

You might wonder what these three countries have in common. One word OIL. While serving in Vietnam in 1970, I stood on the shore of the South China Sea and watched Royal Dutch Shell drill. Drilling and pumping platforms in the sea as far as one could see.

AKG AV100 Headset -- Any Pireps?

I have owned a set of AKG's for several years. Some days I do 1000NM or more. I find the AKG to be comfortable and the features useful. My backup headset is a Bose X. So far so good. YMMV.

    Caribbean Flying

You would make your life much easier if you would purchase a Jeppesen Trip Kit for the Caribbean and Latin America. Lots of information about who to send what information to and with what lead time. Very few people have up to date information and as you might imagine it changes constantly...

    Caribbean Flying

Back in 2011 a group of us (three airplanes) flew around the Caribbean basin. Some wanted to go to Venezuela but none of us could find insurance coverage. Instead we spent a couple of days on the ABC islands. I hope your group has done a lot of planning because their are a lot of bumps in the...

    Port A Port move

I know several people who have moved them to other airports and found the local building inspectors have requirements that the Port a Port does not meet. Would be worth checking before you spend money moving. One fellow doubled his cost by doing all the modifications required.

Understanding how to fly a holding pattern

I learned this from an FAA inspector (an unusually competent and friendly one) 50 years ago. Hit the fix. Turn outbound. Next turn on the holding side of the fix. To me all that other stuff just adds to the confusion.
