    My 1959 Cessna 182B

What yours weigh empty? I had a pretty good time with my partnership in a '59 182B. It definitely had CG issues though! I had to fly around with 50 lbs of ballast in the extended baggage if I had two 200 lb people in the front seats. 1755 lbs empty with a 33.13" CG. It trued out around 143...

    Fuel prices on the rise

Paying $6/gal for 100LL up here, in the cheap spots. Can't wait to downgrade to a an injected 4-banger and run it LOP! The recent spike in fuel prices is almost like paying for an extra annual every year.....

    G3X touch + GNX375 a minimalist EAB IFR panel? Backup "gyro"(G5) req'd? GTN650 instead of GNX375?

If they have two separate AHRS sources, then yes, otherwise no. The G3X GDU-460/470 displays don't have any kind of internal AHRS, they rely on a GSU-25 type AHRS box for "gyro" information. So if your airplane has two GSU-25 units, then it would have redundancy with just the two G3X's. The...

Any harm in leaving the oil filter off and oil draining for a few days?

Yes, I finished the oil change week before last and test flew it as per usual. No, leaving it draining and the filter adapter uncovered for a few days didn't seem to matter aside from the usual benefits of running W80 instead of W100 in the near zero F temps. Sure, probably not the best...

    GNX 375 or GNC 355

Anyone know where to get a GNX-375? They seem to be backordered to next summer :/

    Take off MP reduction

The POH says to reduce MP and RPM, that’s why I do it. C182B with an O-470L. From experience, CHT gets way hotter if you keep it at 28”/2600 for more than a few minutes vs the usual 500 foot reduction to 23/2450. Easy to spike it well over 400 F quickly in summer. I haven’t experimented with...

Aircraft cleaning service removed fuselage paint

I think he wanted $500/day but accepted pay for only 1 day given the result.

Aircraft cleaning service removed fuselage paint

Unfortunately I didn’t save much because it was the previous owner that left it outside.

Aircraft cleaning service removed fuselage paint

Quick question/story: We had some black mold/fungus growing on top of the wings from when the airplane lived outside, and our IA recommended a local "mobile airplane detailing service" to clean the airplane, stating that the stuff can be difficult to remove. It wasn't all over the wings, just...

    Thermocouple wire connector

I'm not even sure if this is thermocouple wire, but does anyone know what type of connector/splice/terminal this is and where I can find another or a suitable substitute? The wire is very thin and is foe an EGT gauge. Just trying to make life easy for my mechanic and source some parts. He...

Any harm in leaving the oil filter off and oil draining for a few days?

This last time, my 20 quart used oil bucket was definitely less than 1/3rd full after draining, so at most 7 quarts drained, from the plug anyway. It read about 10.5 quarts before change. I added 8 quarts during the oil change and it still reads about 10.5 quarts. I have no idea why it is...

Any harm in leaving the oil filter off and oil draining for a few days?

No obsession. If it has to sit there for 3 days with no oil I just figured why not? Plus this plane, which usually reads about 10 on the dipstick at oil changes, usually only drains out 6-7 quarts if I just let it drain for half an hour or so after flying it.

Any harm in leaving the oil filter off and oil draining for a few days?

O-470L in a C182B. I made a mistake and did an oil change after my last flight. I figured the usual local supply shops would be open for the biggest shopping day of the year (black friday) but they were all closed until Monday, and I don't have an oil filter. Is there any harm in letting the...

    landing a seneca II

Do a weight and balance and make sure you're within the CG envelope. If you're close to the forward limit put some weight in the aft baggage and make sure there isn't any crap in the nose. Use nose up trim and pull hard in the flare, but remember it is a low rider so don't flare too soon.

    Daily Pic

Taken on my flight last night in an MD-11 at 33,000 feet near the Bering Strait during G3 level geomagnetic storm. Tons of color and the most dancing movement I've ever seen. Hard to get great pictures from a moving airplane though.

Failure to maintain directional control in Texas drag racing incident

Sad, was just flying out of there on Wednesday....they wanted some flybys from the local pilots before the race. The airport manager seemed like a really nice lady.

Cub Crafters Carbon Cub FX3 training through Tac-Aero in the Texas hill country, based in Fredricksburg (T82). Highly recommended. It was the most fun I've had flying in 20 years.

another Cirrus engine failure. Another chute saves

I know I'm just a meaningless anecdotal example, but I've spent 10,000 hours behind turbines (turbofans) and 1,000 behind pistons. Had two jets quit on me, both shortly after takeoff, no recips have quit yet. Thankfully I always had at least one extra engine in the jets. I wonder if fuel...

    Cessna Baggage Door Lock

I recently discovered part #8 in the diagram below (0413323-7) missing from the baggage door on a '59 C182B. I'm not sure how this happened, I can only speculate that it departed in-flight or during a takeoff or landing. This is the part that the key goes into to move the baggage door lock cam...

VFR flight following with Approach not handed off to Tower

Landing at the Class D satellite. Normally I'd 100% just ask for the switch to the class D tower if the handoff didn't come, but the approach frequency was so congested for several miles with blocked transmissions, etc that I couldn't get a word in before I was going to enter the adjoining...
