Daylight Time vs. Standard Time

I try to remember to just say Eastern because I can never remember which we’re in at the moment.

I'd posit that the U.S. (population, demographics, work/life balance, working conditions, etc.) is a little different now than it was 50 years ago and would be worth another try. Exhibit A - not many people teleworked in the 70's.

Plus, our daughter goes to school at 6 AM during the fall every morning for band practice. It's dark no matter what we do with DST.

I am hoping this was thought through a lot more than it was 50 years ago. Back then it was more of a knee jerk reaction to the oil prices of the time.

I just think I would have noticed not doing the time change. Maybe I noticed and just forgot. :dunno:

I forget where I saw it, but the accident rate, fatalities and pretty much all bad things had no change. However, Bob Dole pushed to repeal the permanent DST to try and help Republicans have some sort of good feeling since Nixon was impeachment hearings, due to media. The media was ignoring the facts, and playing all sorts of feel bad stories about parents whose kids were hit by cars. What the media largely ignored, the kids would have been going to school in the dark, regardless of DST, it just made the parents feel better to blame congress.

I couldn't agree more! I too would GREATLY prefer DST, but I've been saying for years, just pick one!
and yes, ZULU would work for me too.... (although I think it would take a while to recalibrate my brain to that one!)
 
Permanent DST or getting rid of DST is pretty much the same thing. It just depends on what timezone you fix your location in.

well I think the only difference is that "the world" operates by the clock.
like a lot of folks...I'm at work until 5PM, and that's not likely to change no matter if they switch to standard, to zulu, or some other thing (call it MAGA time)

so for standard time that means I get home at sunset, and there's no time to mow the grass or do anything else that I want or need to do. It's pretty much go inside and get dinner going and hunker down for the night
and if I need to drop by a store on the way home it's solid dark by the time I'm checking the mail and getting out of the car.
but with DST I have time to get a few things done...and in the summer significant time, enough to mow the lawn, etc..!

Are you on the eastern side or western side of the timezone? That is fundamentally what makes the difference.

When I lived further north, sunrise came at 0459 local. Plenty of time to mow before heading into the office or on the weekend.

Mexico no longer uses DST, so the urge to do as you describe when my US collaborators made that mistake was almost too strong to resist sometimes.

AZ, except for the Navajo Nation, except for the Hopi Nation within the Navajo Nation. Hawaii, too. Actually, the Uniform time Act in 1966 let states decide for themselves, and AZ opted out at that time.

Yep. Living on the western edge of Eastern time. Sun comes up late and goes down late. I like it. During summer there is daylight until almost 10p. I get more exercise, more outdoor work done, and more social with neighbors and friends. Plus I can wake up late and not feel bad that I’m wasting daylight, lol. Permanent “spring forward” for me.

Which to me is an argument that only works in some parts of the country anyway. My daughter waited in the dark for the school bus during Daylight AND Standard time.

And moreover, it seems like lots of parents, especially of younger kids wait IN THEIR CAR with their kids at the bus stop anyway. So who cares if it's dark or light.

my youngest likes riding her bike to school in the dark...and I appreciate that. It adds to the adventure to start the day! (I'll just leave a comment that as a dad I'm ok with it because it's a safe ride, crossing guards, etc...) If we lived in a worse area, further away, etc... I might sing a different tune.)
 
I grew up in indiana in the 70/80s you time change people are just damn wierd, get up or go to bed earlier already
 
Considering the jist of the implied complaint is not getting to do stuff you want when it's light outside, blaming a clock instead of your state's crappy labor rules/work-life balance is peak American.

There was a MA politician who was trying to convince the governments in all 6 New England states to change New England from the Eastern time zone to the Atlantic time zone. Then once that was done do what AZ did and stay on permament Standard time. Such a move would essentially make New England on permament EDT.

why blame the government? blame the company you work for. Blame the stores.
 
I'd be good with Eastern Standard Time (for where we live). But my wife and I are retired, so time and days do not really affect our lives very much.
 
My alarm clock stays on DST and I just go to work when I'm supposed to be there.
