Great choice. It's hard to beat the versatility of a Skylane. Even though I've owned two of them & fly them quite regularly as an instructor I never tire of them. Just remember to use that nose up trim on landing & pull hard that heavy elevator when you're touching down. But you probably already know that.

When I was considering a first airplane I was told a great advantage of a high wing was the shade it affords the cabin and when standing outside on the ramp. I didn't think that it would be that big of an advantage. I was discussing this with a CFI this past Saturday while under the wing of my 182; the outside temps were in the mid 90's/86% humidity and the asphalt ramp hot enough to poach an egg but we were relatively comfy.

…and it’s extremely convenient for loading and unloading if you fly when it’s raining.
 
So what are your first 3 upgrades or purchases? :)

I already have quotes for, and now need to schedule installation for a GTN 650xi, dual G 275’s, and a GFC 500. Since this is the first and last plane, I figured I’ll just consider all of that as part of the purchase cost.

Plane already has a GNC 355, so I’ll end up with dual back up and linked GPS units as well as one nav.

We're still waiting on the panel pics. ;)

Does it already have a GTX345 for a transponder? What does it have for an audio panel?
 
Transponder is a Stratus - which I prefer over the Garmin. Audio panel is a PAR 200 B panel/com combo.

My personal “must have” is at least one Nav radio. A “really want” is a back up GPS.

Which leads me to adding the GTNxi 650 to provide the Nav radio as well as the second GPS.

Which means I’ll have to replace the current audio panel unfortunately as it can’t manage three coms (its own plus the GNC and GTNxi).

I like your approach. Get it installed, write it off as part of the purchase price... But then join us PoA'ers at Gaston's 2024!

That's good because the GNC355 cannot provide VPATH functionality to the GFC500 like a GTN-xi can. I've used it in a G1000/GFC700 and it's a pretty big deal.

A GTN-xi also buys you Smart Glide but it's more like gravy compared to VPATH, I think.

Sounds like your next phone call needs to be to @mscheuer regarding what to do with your existing PAR200B.

If it is first and last, stretch or wait and put in a G3X Touch. Trust me, the pain of writing the check is far surpassed by how much you will love the panel.

If this is indeed your 'forever' airplane, I concur that the G3X would be a great solution. However, it will require a new panel but will look nice and clean. I have been flying my 182-S behind a GTN/275 x2/GFC500 (removal of vacuum system) for 6 hours now and it is fantastic. I do not plan on keeping this aircraft for more than another year or two so I did not want to incur the expense of gutting and cutting a new panel for a G3X; it would have been a strong consideration otherwise.
 
G3X has crossed my mind. Maybe in a few years. The dual 275s would then be a nice back up.
