This is Jesse's achievement, not mine, but I'd sure like to know more about this tale of adventure! I'm picturing you, in the FlyBaby, at 20,000 feet...
Went from flying a 208 to flying a DA7X in 2015. I'm not going to sell myself short in 2016. I'm planning on flying a BBJ seven three in 2016. I only have 1500 hrs and I think it's the next logical step.
Piper Malibu, headed southbound, from Nebraska to Port Aransas Texas. Passed through the east side of the DFW airspace southbound and had some vectors because I was all up in their arrivals.
Finally was clear of all the traffic, plane full of women sleeping in the back, me up front in pressurized comfort. There I am, life is great, cruising on autopilot, shoes off, seat back, music playing through the bluetooth intercom system, totally relaxed. Probably about 10:30 pm at this point, not quite sure.
All of the sudden a green light appeared slightly above and to my left rapidly closing directly at our nose. I mean, like FAST, like a jet was a second or less away from hitting us.
Time slowed, my hand shot to the autopilot disconnect, I was a heartbeat away from taking some sort of spectacular evasive action. Just as my finger pressed the disconnect the "airplane" exploded spectacularly in front of me. At that point I realized it was no airplane at all. It likely wasn't close to me, could have been way above me, but sure the hell didn't look like it. It looked RIGHT in front of me when it transitioned from a green light to its fireworks like ending.
The passengers in the back never knew how close we came to me scaring the absolute **** out of them with whatever evasive maneuver I was about to do.
It took about a hour before I settled down after that. It was the most terrifying second of flying I've ever experienced.
2015
Got back in the air after almost 2 years fighting medical issues
Only logged 6.7 hours
2016
Get back up to speed on instruments and get an IPC
Finally fly missions with AFW
