2015 Recap

Hours: I surpassed 1000 hours! TT 1048.4

ASEL: 118.6
97 Landings (97 Day), 20 Approaches
Approach ILS: 2
Approaches Localizer: 1
Approach RNAV/GPS: 16
Approach VOR/DME: 1
Cross Country: 96.8
IMC: 7.4
Simulated Instrument: 5.9
PIC: 118.6
Total Time: 118.6

New Airports: KCDI,KVPZ,KDBQ,KLYV,KRAP,KLXN,KIXD,KHSB,KMRB

New States:
Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas

Fun Flights:
Kayla's Foster Flight - Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue (MAESSR) flight.

Lucy Finds Her Forever Home - Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue (MAESSR) flight.

BACFest Dubuque, IA - Annual get together for Baby Beech owners. Record turn out; 33 planes and 88 people.

Rapid City, SD - Cross this off of our bucket list. We finally got to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse!

Olathe, KS - Mary and I wanted to stop in and say hello to our friends in Kansas.

Airplane:
I went ahead and had the ADS-B added to 08Romeo. Equipment installed is a Garmin GDL88 and the FlightStream 210. This upgrade really has added to the Garmin 530W usability with flight planning. The ADS-B traffic is amazing, the weather, meh. I'll keep my XM weather subscription.
A new Alternator was required following annual. The existing Kelly quit in flight and a new Hartzel unit was ordered and installed.

Notes:
It was a strange year as Mary and I entered into our retirement. I thought I would be flying more but the weekend hops to the beach were now old news since we were living here full time. There wasn't much need to fly north with no home to go to.

Through the first three months up until retirement in March I had just 13 hours. Thinking my flight time would still increase, I saw a slight rise after the first quarter. New house projects became the norm and occupied most of my time. From April through the end of September I noted only 46 additional hours for a total of 59 through nine months.

With the house renovations completed and a fresh third class medical in hand, we decided to head west for BACFest. The group dubbed our trip BAC to BAC since a few of us decided to add on Rapid City, SD then for some members on to Colorado, for us Kansas City, so it was BACk to BACk adventures.

October through December was very busy, racking up an additional 59.6 hours despite being down for annual, the ADS-B install and an alternator replacement that required a VFR only day to fly back to the shop.

I'm not really sure what's in store for 2016. Mary and I want to travel more and we would like to attend the next BACFest in Branson, Mo. If we do make Branson we would like to visit Sandra in Plano Texas and then head south to Waco Texas and tour the shops of one of our favorite tv shows, "Fixer Upper".

We still have Jekyll Island, GA and Mackinac Island, MI on our list of places to visit. We love the Florida Keys and there is talk of a BAC flight to the Bahamas in the Spring. So many places to visit and explore!

Re: 2015 Recap

Just totaled up my TT and did 890. Started with 280 in April when I got my CFI and now have over 1150. Hoping to be at a regional before my 23rd birthday.

Re: 2015 Recap

Gary -- I read most of your adventures on your blog. Thanks for keeping that up.

Re: 2015 Recap

56.6 hours for me in 2015! That's my highest total of any year since getting my PPL. I'm happy about that.

Personal highlight of the aviation year was passing 250 hours total time. Best flight was probably taking my Mom on a short XC to Groton Airport for lunch during the summer and her not getting airsick!( first time she ever went on an XC and did not throw up!). We had a great time too.

Here is to an even better 2016!

HP and Complex endorsements, 3 new planes added to the rental options and about 60 hours. Looking forward to the Monkey in 2016.

Nice!

My key facts are:
Bought new 2012 FIKI turbo Cirrus SR22 to replace my 2006 NA SR22
About 240 hours total time across the old and new plane
92 flights
29 IAPs
Around 40,000NM flown (only know actual number in the new plane, guesstimating on old plane)
4 international trips (Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Canada X2)
Many, many $$$ spent...

Only 4 airline flights - priceless

Whoo Hoo! a major accomplishment!

the ADS-B install and an alternator replacement that required a VFR only day to fly back to the shop.

You still know how to do that?? :D:D

We still have Jekyll Island, GA and Mackinac Island, MI on our list of places to visit. We love the Florida Keys and there is talk of a BAC flight to the Bahamas in the Spring. So many places to visit and explore!

Yep, it's a big world out there!! Glad to hear that you and Mary are having a fine time in retirement, now I've got something to look forward to!

Gary

Re: 2015 Recap

Wow! You're on your way for sure. I remember completing my commercial around the same time as you and then thinking about a CFI which I have done nothing toward other than take the writtens. I feel like a slacker now.
Yea I did not expect to get the hours as quickly as I did. I was dumb and didn't take the ATP written so I'll have to do the CTP course.

Re: 2015 Recap

Jordan, good luck!

Sam, thanks for reading. I have fun with the write ups and I hope it inspires someone to take the plunge and enjoy adventures with their plane.

Caramon, I could only hope for that many hours in a year. Now if I could get my night flight numbers up.

Rudy, that's one sweet ride.

Gary, Merry Christmas my friend! Mary passes on a hug. Yes, I still remember VFR flight.....that's the days I crank up the xm radio and sing along. ;)

Re: 2015 Recap

Ugh, I just added up 2015 and came up with 24.3. PIC. And I need an IPC.

Re: 2015 Recap

Don't know the hours for 2015, but getting a new airplane and a complex endorsement definitely tops the list.

Re: 2015 Recap

Just looked to see how many GA hours I flew in 2015....0.0! Logged a ton of hours in the 10(haven't added them all up yet). Can't believe this year has flown by so fast with deployments and doing the military flying. Goals for 2016 are the ATP and Commercial Glider add-on. Being on here helps me keep some of the GA knowledge up to snuff. Plus Herb Hortman at Northeast Philly passed away and they closed down the flight school. So I've been trying to find some place to rent around there that is as affordable.

Re: 2015 Recap

5 hours for me! 1 PnP flight to 2 new airports and my longest cross-country yet. Life and a back injury have prevented me from flying for months. It is what it is.

Re: 2015 Recap

Very cool, Gary!

I just looked mine up and it's not too bad:

There should be couple more hours before the year ends if weather cooperates. So, over 200 I should go :)

We flew from Daytona Beach to Catalina Island in our new-to-us Bonanza.

In 2016 we plan to fly Florida to Alaska (and hopefully, return).

2015, began PPL training, now at 11 ish hours and will solo in the next few days.

Will finish PPL in 2016 and do some modest family trips, perhaps buy, perhaps begin on IR, depending on lots of factors.

Pretty good year. Did a lot of flying. Flew a lot of airplanes. Almost had a heart arrack when space debris exploded directly in front of me at Fl200. Taught Ted's son that Malibus are better airplanes than 310s. Mostly because he can run up and down the airstair door.

2016 begins with delivering an airplane tomorrow to OKC.

2015:

- We purchased our first airplane in mid February (1980 Cessna TR182) in Deer Valley, AZ
- Experienced my first annual -- to the tune of $19K with labor and lots of upgrades
- Crossed the 500 hour mark
- 82 hours of flying (April - December, post-annual). 52 of that cross country time. 48 passengers.
- First Pilots 'n Paws mission
- Six Angel Flight missions
- Gaston's!!
- Longest X/C flight -- to Florida and back
-

2016 goals:
- I missed ChallengeAir this year, will watch for a 2016 Dallas-area event (I love that org and flying for them!)
- At least one Angel Flight mission per month (12 or more missions)
- Gaston's!!
- The Bahamas
- Port Aransas (again)
- Albuquerque for the Balloon Festival
- Find a couple of "distinguished" partners for the TR182
- Complete Commercial rating
- Start OSH 2017 planning (I've gone every 3 years since 2008)
- > 150 hours

2015 accomplishments
Got my PPL after a 30+ year layoff.
Flew a buncha sub-300nm XC's to different places

2016 goals
Fly my a$$ off!
Complete my IR
Get my tailwheel
Get some acro training

That's a worthy goal.

Went from flying a 208 to flying a DA7X in 2015. I'm not going to sell myself short in 2016. I'm planning on flying a BBJ seven three in 2016. I only have 1500 hrs and I think it's the next logical step.

Passed the 250 hour mark in 2015 and flew over 55 hours. It was a really good year for me flying wise.

In 2016 I may decide to pursue another rating either my commercial VFR or my Instrumant rating. Not sure yet. I'd love to buy a plane in 2016 but that seems like a longer term goal.

Taught Ted's son that Malibus are better airplanes than 310s. Mostly because he can run up and down the airstair door.

"The Piper Malibuuuuuuuuuu has a loooooooooooooong wingspan!"

Fortunately he hasn't yet found out how to click "Buy it now" on eBay.

2015:
-Flew something around 150ish hours I believe, which is low compared to the 500ish I used to do, but more in line with what's realistic now given family, work, etc.
-Did more personal flying than we've done previously, much of which was around the move
-Went to Gaston's!
-Flew a couple hundred dogs
-Passed 2500TT. Pretty sure I was already at 2000 multi, but I definitely am now
-Flew with Jesse in the Malibu. This destroyed my otherwise pristine logbook by having to add "SEL" time. This logbook otherwise was 100% "MEL" time :)

2016:
-Attend Gaston's with the family again
-Fly more dogs
-Maybe further destroy my logbook with some more SEL time

Tomorrow I'm starting off the new year flying in three planes (310, 340, Navajo). Seems like a good way to ring things in.

2015: 40 hours, 5 hours of night solo, 200 TT. Took mom flying, took wife flying, took son flying.

2016: join a club? instrument? commercial?

In 2015:
Passed checkride in February
Joined a great flying club at my home airport
First passenger. What a cool experience that was.
Lots of fun local and XC flights with friends and family.
First PNP flight. Dachshund puppy to Pennsylvania.
Passed 100 hrs last month.
2015 was a great year flying and otherwise and I can't wait for what 2016 brings. Also very excited to graduate from high school and head up to UND fall 2016!

Happy new year everyone

2015
Flew about 300 hours.
Earned my gyroplane instructor certificate.
Longest cross country was 574 nautical miles from Santa Maria, Ca to Provo, Utah.
2016
Begin instructing when I get my letter of deviation authority for our gyroplane.
Get my class II medical so I can get paid for flying air shows.
Fly more airshows.
Fly with a student from San Diego, CA to Oshkosh, Wisconsin in his gyroplane.
Go to more aviation events.

I wouldn't say starting IFR is a goal of 2016 per se, but I could see maybe possibly starting it towards the end of the year. I really just wanna fly more and fly some longer trips, but the funds have to be in order. ongoing goal is to fly to FLA to see my folks. I'll also continue to look for partners or partnership opportunities. and more 'fly to golf' trips as well.

Almost had a heart attack when space debris exploded directly in front of me at FL200.

This is Jesse's achievement, not mine, but I'd sure like to know more about this tale of adventure! I'm picturing you, in the FlyBaby, at 20,000 feet...

If you're interested but don't quite fit what I listed, talk to me. I know you personally, that helps. :)

Plus you no longer possess the monkey

Didn't fly too much, a little over 350hrs, 60 or so in my own plane, had some fun flights, did the first non-prebuy annual on my plane, aside from some wheel bearings and two new nose tires nothing really came up over the couple days my APIA and I were doing the inspection, not even anything to "keep my eye on" so to speak.

Hopping to get some more hours in this year, maybe get a PPL student or two.

Happy New Years!

2015
  • 46.2 hours for me (all Skylane time), but I sat out for the first 7 months.
  • Flew a whole bunch of kids for one of EAA64's Young Eagle rally
  • Got to fly over the top of DFW for the first time and figured out how easy it is to ask for and get that routing.
  • Flew to Gaston's
  • Flew several PnP Flights, including one to KBGD with Frogs97
  • Got a flight in the "ever so distiguished" Birdy.
  • Flew PIC into and out of KDAL for the first time.
  • Flew a 1.25" coked up drunk plastic Monkey from KBGD to Denton, then unleashed him on 6PC and JCranford.
  • Did my first Angel Flight
  • Joined my first B737 conga line going into Houston Hobby.
  • Nearly experienced my first lost comms returning from that flight
2016
  • Finish my IFR
  • Obtain my Bonanza Transition so I can fly N149G
  • Convince Tyler Chapman (PilotTangoCharlie) to get going on obtaining his CFI credentials (dude, you have the knowledge, skills, and heart for it. Go get the FAA to recognize it!)

In 2015?

It was a good year.

Got an instrument rating.
Qualified as a (SAR) mission pilot and found my first ELT on the same day
Qualified as an airborne photographer
Flew 12 "orientation rides"
Flew disaster relief missions related to wildfires
Got my *** handed to me at USCG water survival training
Flew 144 hours left seat (140 PIC, the remaining AATD), 25 hours right seat (observer and/or safety pilot), 7 hours back seat
Organized training sorties

It's gonna be hard to match that in 2016. Near term goals are to qualify for CAP G1000 IFR and perhaps some commercial training. Maybe qualify for some ground pounder roles. Certainly train some new back/right seaters. Fly a defense-target mission or two.

Got almost another 100 test flight hours on my death trap... For some reason, it runs perfectly and hopefully it will not kill me in 2016.....

Life is good...:):)...

No fireballs
No smoking holes
Not even "I have a number for you to call when you land"
so 2015 was awesome

2016? -see above for similar goals

That's a heck of a list!

Glad CAP is working out for you, wish I had the same experience with them.

It's actually more than I realized. I thought I was around 100 hours until I looked in the logbook!

CAP is only about half of those hours. I didn't use it for my IR, and I can't take the family.

It IS working fairly nicely, despite the occasional BS. There is at least one guy well above my grade who thinks a 400 hour 2d Lt is too inexperienced (and, true enough, there really aren't all that many 2d Lts among the pilots).

The good part about all that is, no damage to any aircraft, and no passenger injuries or messes to clean up. And I managed to keep my lunch down during airborne photography training. The bad is I had my first experience with Cessna Forehead (though, NOT on a control surface like everyone else does -- I inspected a 177RG cargo door a little too closely -- DANG that bled).
