Isn't that a standard part of every United pre-takeoff announcement?
 
Seems a lot more dangerous than just landing without the gear.
 
The article seemed to imply that the plane was within it's CG envelope.
Moving the freight while enroute? Were passengers in seats, or hanging on to crates strapped into the back?
 
From the picture it looks like they ended up on the center of the runway and did a good job. I am surprised that the in flight CG would allow them to do that. Things were different back then, hell they were different 30 years ago. I think the crew did a good job, it ended up well.
 
Photo dated 1950, I'll bet the pilot had a bunch of DC-3 time.
