Everything Offends Me
For people that live in Lincoln/Omaha, what is there to do? Anything fun nearby, any pro sports teams nearby, big shows, etc?

Well, if you have any interest in aviation, the Strategic Air and Space Museum is about halfway between them.

Watch the corn and soybeans grow in summer. Listen to the wind howl in winter. Fly airplanes.

It's off season now but the Husker football team is making a comeback. The Husker girls volleyball team is quite professional as well. They almost always beat the teams from California and Hawaii (generally quite convincingly).

In Omaha- the zoo is supposed to be good. About 1/2 way between Lincoln & Omaha, they have a safari park that is good (drive through). You can come down and have dinner with the Lincoln crowd.

Edit- I second the air & space museum (head smack!)

I don't hang out in Omaha much - there is a pretty good downtown scene in Lincoln. Cornhusker football is HUGE. Strategic Air and Space Museum is between Lincoln and Omaha.

I mean. It's pretty much the same as any Midwestern city. It is whatever you make of it. You can hang low your entire life or you can find things to do.

I really like Lincoln, cost of living is low, crime is low, downtown is fun, and the football does make things exciting when it is in season.

When I lived there, (Dad was with SAC flying B-47's) we lived on a Rifle/Skeet range. I have no idea whether or not it's still there, but it was a happening place on the weekends. Of course that's been 40 years ago. It was called the Issac Walton League from my vague memory.

College World Series is great if you're a baseball fan. Runs from mid to end of June.

KC Royals AAA farm team, creatively named the Omaha Royals are pretty OK.

When, and how long, will you be out here?

Unknown, and possibly permanently....

Lot of different options, Omaha is a very real one right now, and I want to make sure Brianna and I won't want to commit suicide out of boredom there.

well you probably wont have to dodge stray bullets

CWS is big in the summer, though I never made it over to see any of the games before we moved south. :(

Omaha usually gets decent concerts during midwest tours. 3hrs from Des Moines for the midwest tours that don't hit Omaha.

Omaha usually has good airline fares - enough 'better' for people to drive 3 hrs from Des Moines to fly out of Omaha.

IIRC, there are casinos on the Nebraska side of the river.

Loess Hills are on the Iowa side of the river - good for hiking, camping, etc.

Hop-skip-and-jump from Lincoln for fall football.

Potential for LOTS of snow in the winter. Potential for hot and humid in the summer (at least by midwest standards).

Not 'too' terribly far from Black Hills for summer vacations.

and, for nick, the casino is about the only place left in iowa where you can smoke

Perhaps a bit more than forty years ago? SAC stopped flying B-47s in 1967.

Kansas City is only about 3 hours by car from Omaha and has lots of attractions.

Have you or your fiancee ever lived anywhere cold before?

I have. I lived in New Hampshire for 3 years. She, unfortunately, has not lived anywhere outside of the Albuquerque area.

How cold are we talking?

Not nearly as cold as Minneapolis was. The first two years I lived here we generally didn't have standing snow for more then about a week before it'd melt.

Last year was a bit rougher though. I really doubt most years carry as much snow and cold as the 2009/2010 winter did.

The winter "cold" season really only lasts from about December to March. It's a few months shorter than Minnesota.

Yea, rub it in.... I was rounding and didn't want to go up! :D

We left in '67 he went to Viet Nam and we went to Travis and MAC.

FWIW, Albuquerque and Santa Fe had a really rough winter too (hell, its still snowing depending on the day right now). I think I'll disregard the 2009 climate statistics :D

Oh. Don't forget that you are a HELL of a lot closer to Gastons. We could airplane pool. It's only like 300 nm. You're also a LOT closer to Diana's farm and 6Y9.

This would be a good option for you in Omaha:

And still not far from Albuquerque to visit family.

Looks like Brianna and I have some talking to do tonight. My only concern is that its an Indian company with American presence. I've never worked in an Indian Culture. Not saying good or bad, just saying its a concern.

Just don't bring a roast beef sandwich for lunch...

What about ranchland/property outside of Omaha, for the country living we desire? It seems like Omaha is pretty similar to Albuquerque, and we want to live in a smaller town than that.

There are plenty of small towns throughout the area with a very reasonable drive. I'm sure there are plenty of rural properties. Not sure how reasonably priced they are.

Depends on the company. Tata has an excellent reputation in India of taking care of their employees. The Indians I work with in the USA (mostly lab types) do expect things to get done.

The cap'n is correct about Tata. It is a good company. Culturally I have never had an issue working with Indians. They are, as a people, pretty culturally close to us when it comes to business. Many Indians are western educated and they value the fact that they are a democratic nation of laws. Indians are often accepting of cultural outsiders in the business world, tending to embrace many of the business ethics that we ourselves embrace. I also have to say that, from what I have observed, their failings are often the same ones as ours too.

The times I've been to Omaha, I was very impressed. Cool downtown area with (what seemed to be) a good music scene.

My friends that are stationed there really like it.

Oh that poor thing .. she may not make it.

Last winter for Dec Jan Feb we had something like 5 days above
40 degrees. Usually it's around 50. And we had lots of snow for all
3 months.

The good: nice people, Lincoln has fairly low crime rate (Omaha is
higher), our EAA chapter has a nice breakfast in Crete every 3rd Saturday.
You can come down and hang out on Bandit Row in Crete where Geico and
I reside.

The bad: extreme weather year round. High taxes.

Nebraskans seem to take their college football very seriously too! I seem to recall that many Omahans (sp?) will travel to Lincoln for the games. Heck I know more than a few Corn Husker Alums in the Chicago area that make the trek for a game or two each year.

Omaha is a pretty big city. It's basically two cities split by the interstate. There are 3 malls, just watch out for guns. There is also a neat downtown area that is full of nice restaruants like spaghetti works, Famous Daves, and neat little shops. If you're a guy (and last time I heard you were) there is a Bass Pro shop and Cabellas. If you like neat stuff to do with your sweetie, there are gondalla rides http://www.heartlandgondolas.com/gondo/prices.htm or on the river boat http://www.rivercitystar.com/ . I've also heard you can go rafting in western NE. Of course the Zoo is really big and features an IMAX theater. Across from the zoo is a baseball stadium that has been packed to the brim with fans, so plenty of sports around here too. If you're interested in camping, biking, swimming, or boating, we also have a few large lakes that are nice. As far as the flying goes, you have Omaha, Milliard, Councel bluffs, and plattsmouth all of which are within reasonable distances. Then of course Lincoln. There isn't a whole lot of options for rentals but if you look around hard enough I'm sure you'll find something that suits you. The only drawback to the flying is there isn't many places to go such as fly-ins. Crete and York have great pancake breakfasts on saturdays but if you want more adventure, you'll have to fly a little further. Kansas city for BBQ would be my next reccomendation. That's why we get pilot certificates right?

I was in Omaha for a weekend last year.

It just seemed a little strange to me. There seemed to be some pretty big differences, that were pretty obvious, between the "good part" of town and the "bad part" of town. We didn't have any bad experiences, or anything, it just seemed like there were some things that were out-of-place.

It's smaller than I expected and easy to get around.

The zoo (and it's a pretty nice place to spend a day) shares the same parking lot as the baseball stadium where the KC AAA team plays. It's also the same stadium where the College World Series is played.

The downtown market area is pretty nice. A lot of restaurants, bars, and a brew-pub. Many of the places have outside seating when the weather cooperates.

It's right across the river from the casinos, and about exactly a 3 hour drive to KC.

Can't say much more about the place than that.

When I'm in Omaha, I... Leave. :D

As far as country living, you don't have to go too far from Omaha to be in the country.

Would it be a better description to say that you have to go a long ways into Omaha(r) to be out of the country?
