...in a fly-in vacation destination?

A brief explanation of my reason for asking: We are celebrating the 5th anniversary of opening Amelia's Landing Hotel, and I am wrapping up the renovation of the very last room (the Airshow Room). Yes, my 3 year plan became a 5 year plan, but what else is new? (It took 7 years to finish the Alexis Park Inn, up in Iowa, so I guess I'm getting faster...)

This also marks our 13th year in the aviation themed hotel business. It's hard to believe, but an old newspaper guy and a medical technologist have been successful at separating enough avgas money from y'all to live a pretty grand life for the last 13 years! :)

Still, there is room for improvement, and I need your opinions. We have done a good job of building business, doubling it in 4 years, but fly in guests still represent ~5% of our business. This despite the island having a vibrant tourist industry and a nice airport.

It seems to me that we should be doing better than that with our flying brethren. Which is a long-winded path to the question: What do you want in a fly-in vacation destination? What gets you to pull the trigger on flying somewhere for R&R?

Be specific, please, as not only will I incorporate your suggestions into our business, I will forward them to our Chamber of Commerce.

And for those who have visited us and our island, what did you like? Dislike? What should we change or add?

Thanks!

P.S. For you newbies who are wondering, we actually created our first fly-in hotel's business plan by starting with a post like this, incorporating the suggestions from this very group of pilots. (Well, technically we were all in a predecessor to POA, back then.) So y'all are directly responsible for our success!

Well, he's near Mexico, so...

Stop in to the Hotel Alexis in Jakarta, best hotel to which I've ever been.

Mrs.6PC and I are thinking of dropping in this weekend provided the weather allows it.

My biggest gripe with some hotels is not enough power outlets to power and charge my various electronics. If you provide me extra outlets and a comfy bed with a decent TV, I'm happy!

Or let's put a nightstand in front of the only power outlet - and then you still have to unplug the lamp to use it.

To be honest: information.

From various posts, I've been thinking about seeing if my wife would like to head your way (with me obviously, but there have been days)...

Not sure about others, but we are semi active but also like to have the option to "decompress". Being near the water we like to:
- adult beverage and chair
- Wife goes for a message (wigs me out - so not my thing)
- Swimming is always an option
- We do have a SCUBA C card.
- Hiking is always interesting.
- GOOD FOOD! Here is where things get interesting: Wife is a vegetarian ... For me, I'm pretty "low rent"...

I guess this is what you are looking for. Anyway, I'm looking for a destination to decompress the wife before she causes me to go it alone...

My kids are grown, but if you want families, you're gonna need something for the kids. The pilot gets to fly his plane, mom(non-pilot) gets away from laundry and cooking, so find something for the kids that doesn't involve some kind of game-boy.

Good luck with that.

This is probably just me talking, but it would be helpful to have info on local running trails. Best to get that info from a genuine local runner; most non-runners think a quarter mile of sidewalk or worse, a road makes a good running trail :-(

Wish we were not so far away but Amelia's Landing is on my RON list if I ever find myself in that part of the country.

A courtesy car at the airport they can use to drive to a competing hotel ;-)

What century are you posting from?

I'm not sure I could sell Texas as a vacation, when we could just fly down to La Paz or Cabo instead...

We wanted to go this past weekend but the weather wasn't good. And it won't be any better this weekend (another stormy front coming).
We are waiting for the first good weekend to pay Jay a visit. Maybe we'll see you there. :)

Jay, your hotel is already very pilot-friendly. I don't think we have any requests. Well, maybe the E6B in some rooms should not be nailed to the wall, what if I need to calculate my fuel burn? :dunno: :D
Okay okay, another one: more coffee in the morning. One packet won't cut it for me. LOL

A combination experience appeals to me.

Retro, or old and comfortable, if you will, combined with exceptional connectivity, a dedicated monitor with weather...

And if that isn't enough of a wish list...

A clubhouse Environment, off the lobby where pilots can kick back, tell lies (stories) and imbibe the beverage of their choice.

That all is as opposed to sterile, chrome, and glass, looking like you designed it to keep anyone from actually sitting down and staying a while.

Sorry I haven't come to vist yet but cleanliness, competitive rates, safe part of town, sound-proofing, and above all an A/C that works and works good and quiet where you're at Jay.

Good food. Good food will spread word of mouth and attract people far and wide.

You need a gimmick to make you stand apart. The aviation theme is one. Maybe BBQ Sundays ... get out there and fire up your smoker. Do it at the airport maybe. People don't have to stay with you, but many would fly in for $10 plate of beans and BBQ and you could lay the sales pitch on them.

Ok, we've stayed with you a few times, but that was before we had a plane. Here are some things that I think would help out.

1. Information about car/cart rental and being able to set it up when a reservation is made.
2. Lawn chair/beach stuff rental (Ice chest, umbrella, etc). That stuff always takes up a lot of space in the truck.
3. Number for a Good A&P for the busted airplane.
4. Beach towels. Not sure of a good way to do this.

Hopefully we'll get down there before summer.

Haven't been able to get your way yet. Clean room, decent towels, plenty of wall receptacles. And a friendly helpful staff. That would do it for me. Plenty of ice for adult beverages.

In the Clipper Room (where I stayed in last year), additional outlets for charging mobile devices and laptop would have been nice.

And the comment for more coffee is dead on. During the 10 days I was there, I wound up buying my own filters and small container of Folgers so I would have plenty of brew.

A club room to hang out with others would be nice.

Or if no dedicated room, then "gathering hour" with snacks and beverages in the pool area.

Great start, guys -- thanks!

We've already taken away one great idea, which is an alphabetical list of activities. We currently have such a list for rainy days ("Things to do on the island when it's raining"), but never thought of such a grand, overall list for hiking, biking, kayaking, etc.

We did put one together last year called the "Official Amelia's Landing Pub Crawl", that lists 19 bars in walking order, with GPS verified distances. (Yes, we walked to all of them. Repeatedly. For business.) :)

Just to save time, here's a short list of things we have already, so you don't suggest them:

- Courtesy car for fly-in hotel guests.
- Swimming pool
- Hot tub
- Barbecue grill
- Each room is decorated to reflect a different era of aviation history
- Continental breakfast made to order and served to your room.
- Soft, new beds
- In-room DVD players, and 200+ aviation movies to borrow, gratis.
- Private off leash dog park. ("PeeDee's Park")

Most of these features were suggested by on-line pilots over 13 years ago, by the way!

Port Aransas (which is on Mustang Island) itself has 15 miles of wide open, drive-your-car-on-it beach, 25+ bars and restaurants, deep sea and bay fishing charters, kayak and jet ski rentals, parasailing, scenic biplane rides, and great weather. (Which is why we moved here!)

Things I wish we had, but can't have? Here are a few:

- Bigger singles. Our smallest rooms are really cozy. Most people like them, but some think they're too small. As much as I've remodeled them, I can't stretch them.

- Bigger decks. The hotel, like most structures on the island, is built on stilts (for storm protection) with a wrap-around deck. If only it was 18" wider, we could put rocking chairs on them. Sadly, we can't stretch the decks, either.

- Closer to the airport. We are 2 miles from the airport, or about 4 minutes away. We looked at buying a hotel out there, but all the bars and restaurants are in town, and it's better for guests to drive to the hotel and walk to the bars, instead of walking to the hotel and driving to the bars.

If you've ever stayed at an on-airport hotel (like the awesome Hangar Hotel) you know what I'm talking about. In today's world, drinking and driving is simply a bad idea.

- Warmer winters. I'm hoping Al Gore takes care of that, but so far our winters have been getting steadily colder since we moved here in '10. Nicer than Iowa, obviously, but I don't want to wear shoes, ever.

- A way to set rooms aside for pilots. I can't tell you how totally FRUSTRATING it is to turn pilots away because we are sold out and chock-full of ground-pounders. Too many pilots wait for the weather and just pop in looking for a room, and by then they're gone.

We built this place for pilots, but we keep filling up with regular people instead! ;)

But if I set aside rooms for pilots, turning away regular folk, and y'all don't show up... :(

Otherwise, our facility is everything we want in an island hotel. We designed it to be what we like when traveling, and it seems that a lot of people like what we like.

Anyway, keep the ideas coming! Thanks!

Ok, Jay I was messin with you about the cookies, but in all seriousness. What I have seen give pilots the most fun at some of the fly-ins I have been at are a place to sit around and just tell tales. Nothing fancy at all, but a place to hang. Now I can't really say what the non flying spouses want because I am not one.

Are there any good sights to see from the air? Maybe a kneepad route and chart for some of those wonderful flights you have talked about you and Mary taking.

Maybe a short flying trip offering for your flying guests. Head out to a remote location for sightseeing or a picnic.

Now I am aware that these ideas take you away from the Hotel and might not be possible but they are just thoughts.

I can show you bills for towels that would make your hair stand on end. We have NICE towels, and they don't last long. (As a result, I have the nicest hangar rags you've ever seen!)

One thing re: Wall receptacles. I've added a few, during remodeling, but in my experience there are NEVER enough receptacles in a hotel room.

Example: When my wife, daughter, and I travel, we bring 3 tablets, 3 smartphones, and the odd laptop. All of them need to be plugged in.

So, I purchased a collapsible/foldable power strip that lives in my luggage. It has a hinge between each outlet, so it can accommodate the transformers. It has made traveling so much easier!

Don't forget to reach out to the vendors for various activities and work up deals to co-market the both of you. Your guests get a discount (and you get the credit). Guests they send to you, you reward the vendor with a discount on the rooms should they need to stay there.

Or something along those lines.

Then make sure you both co-market on each other's web sites and other online media.

Get a few good power strips to have at the front counter for guests to request. Tag them with an identifying number and amend that info as a note to their guest record. If they return the strip to you, good. If not, then they get charged the replacement cost.

could you, like, not be in texas? no self respecting NY Giants fan has any reason to go to texas.

that is, unless you had hookers and blow. then sign me up for a 1 week stay.

And get the kind that have a couple of USB ports built in. Between my ICOM, my Stratus, my Ipad Iphone and her Ipad and Iphone, we never have enough charging blocks.

And hooks and towel racks in the bathroom for bathing suits and towels. I hate throwing everything on the floor.

And sufficient hangers in the closets.

And I always wonder why so many hotels put up those "no hanger" signs on the fire sprinklers. If there were some sort of hooks, maybe on the room door to hang a hanging bag people wouldn't hang things on the sprinklers.

And maybe a courtesy bottle of wine or champagne with a note saying it is for fly-in guests (make us feel special). Offer us a ride in the RV!

Offer us a ride in the RV!

Remember to say VANS RV when making that request. Otherwise with Jay's sense of humor, you'd wind up cruising the Port A strip in one of these.

Hey!

Where'd you get Larry the Cable Guy's hot rod?

Seriously? You need more 110-220v wall plugs for many USB ports? We carry two of these when we travel. I don't work for amazon or the whatever company that makes these products. Linky.

This thing works great. I love this version as it doesn't plug directly into the wall sucking 2 spots up - it has about a 4 foot cord (maybe 6 foot?) so you can put this up on the night stand/dresser and plug all your toys into it. Works with everything from your ipad to your XGPS/Stratus/Chromebook. This thing will feed hungry machines and automatically detect apple products and non-apple products to deliver the fastest charge!

Now that we no longer bring laptops, we stopped carrying out 3 foot extension cord. But, if you have laptops and other things, just bring one of these from your favorite big box hardware store for a couple $$.

When we travel over seas or when we we want to carry less stuff, we just bring on of these for the two of us, it's still more than enough.

Except for the fact that Texas is awesome.

Back to the OP:

We are always looking for airports with these in mind:
1) How far are you away and how do we get to your hotel and/or camp site.
2) Is there hiking, water activities, or other active things to do nearby that we can walk to or easily/cheaply get a ride to.
3) Things to do or specifically, not do in the evening but still not sitting in our hotel room bored. Chilling by the pool/spa, club/community room play pool/board games, bar, etc without leaving the hotel is always great.
3a) If you have a community room - please supply board games and relatively fresh decks of cards (Costco/amazon). These are great for couples or among new friends. Even kids love these. Every time I visit my nephews of 6 and 8 - the first thing they ask when we get in the door is what board game we want to play with them. They live in SF and their parents just toss the latest iPad or play station at them. Uno and Phase 10 is always a hit...Always! For every age, every ability. It's cheap for the hotel and I have many memories from all over the world playing with strangers a game of uno...sometimes not even able to speak a common language. Last time was in Japan in August..another time in Italy in front of a jelato cart.
4) For pilot travelers: Offer cheap coin operated washing machines/driers. Just cover costs if you can. Traveling/touring pilots will eventually need to do laundry and these units take up such a small space. I've even seem them installed in bathrooms - free standing in a corner.

I'm planning a 3 month cross country trip and just saw your place a couple weeks ago online. Looking forward to checking it out. We will be camping some nights and hotel it other nights. I once booked a room in Vancouver Canada on a trip like this. Booked this place solely because it had a mini washer/dryer unit in the hotel room we stayed - not coin versions machines either - just cheap apartment grade. I would not have stayed their originally if it not been for that. I've since been back to that hotel 3 times and not used the laundry those other 3 times as we flew commercial. The first time sold me and I'll be going back to that every time I go to Vancouver.

It's funny how people ask you to make an $$$ remodel for a few more outlets when they can solve their most of their own problem with a little bit of brain power.

What I like in a hotel:
-cleanliness
-location
-knowledgeable and friendly staff

-knowledgeable and friendly staff

Fortunately, this property has that in spades. At the front counter, you'll find either Mary, Jay himself, or their daughter. All well versed in how to make your stay the best possible.

I liked your proximity to the beach. I disliked that the seafood place was closed the night I was there :p
Or let's put a nightstand in front of the only power outlet - and then you still have to unplug the lamp to use it.
I believe this is in construction code for hotel room.
I'm not sure I could sell Texas as a vacation, when we could just fly down to La Paz or Cabo instead...
Passport control and customs is generally a lot easier in Texas

Jay was hiding when I was there. I did get to meet Mary though, and their front desk girl Ivy (I think that was her name)
