Water Ditch near JFK

During investigation and any possible enforcement action, will the FAA be looking at the CFI or DPE? It would seam that evidence of this behavior pattern would have shown itself sometime prior to the pilot receiving his certificate.

Doesn't sound like he's interested in taking any responsibility for his stupidity.

I think he doesn't believe that what he did was stupid and irresponsible.

"The first step is admitting you have a problem."

I think y'all might be a little hard of the guy. We all agree he has no business flying an aircraft, right?

Well he landed as fast as he could. He was no longer a hazard to any of his passengers or other aircraft. That shows good judgment, right? ;)

Probably not. The dummy is the only one responsible for his own stupidity.

“What’s the big deal? It happens all the time in Alaska.”

I find it mind-boggling that somebody with that kind of attitude was actually able to make it through training and pass the checkride. It just doesn't make any sense.

This is so utterly weird, there just has to be something to it we're not seeing.

I stand corrected - according to the FAA database, this moron does indeed have his PPL with an IR.

I'm sure the FAA is definitely looking up his former CFIs and possibly DPEs as well.

Allow me to use my psychic powers here,....

"I have 35 hours already! Only 5 more to go 'til I'm done, right?"

Somewhere near the right coast a CFI and DPE are cowering right now.

Nope: BTDT more than once. Never heard a peep from the Feds. As a CFI you can't be held responsible for the stupidity of others.

What really boggles my mind is, what did he plan to do after he landed? Did he plan to just take off again? What was his motivation for landing on the beach in the first place?

Latest news today, he was rushed to the hospital after experiencing seizures.

Either possible explanation or he is already planning his legal defense. Should be interesting to watch.

The "blame the AME" defense? "You shoulda known my son was special and you shouldtna given him a medical!"

Used to be you could send your miscreant kid to the Army and they'd straighten him out...and teach him a useful skill in the process.

We had a teacher at my son's school that started behaving weird. The day after the administration pulled her in to discuss her inappropriate behavior she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

This kid actually got a 1st class Medical. Why he did that as a PP I have no clue, but according to the FAA database, that's what he did.

I'm sure he's headed for an illustrious career as an airline pilot. Hey, Sully landed a plane in New York waters, and everybody thought he was great!

The only stupid thing he did was try and ask for permission first. I don't know what the NY state or NYC city code is, but in Michigan, there is nothing that precludes someone from landing on a public beach.

Attempting.

Here's something I don't understand: Was the original intention to take off again after landing, and if so, why didn't he attempt it? This whole deal is just so messed up. Did he think he could get the Warrior, with little bitty asphalt-loving tires, off the beach again? Is this a weird publicity stunt?

Is there a problem? Jim Tweeto is his 180 with tundra tires used the water to slow down as he came up on the beach and afetr loading the passenegrs just turned around and took off.

Correct on the hospital:

And now his medical is toast for a long long time. Seizures will be difficult to paper over.....

The plane has been trucked off the beach.

OK, folks, nothing more to see here. Move on along. Regardless of why he did this, let's be glad that he didn't kill anyone.

Between him acting goofy, a passenger puking after they landed and now possibly seizures they should probably check his blood carbon monoxide levels (or more precisely carboxy-hemoglobin, the reaction product).

Then again, this may just be a lame attempt to get off the potential criminal repercussions using the looney card.

I may be jaded, but I suspect that is closer to the truth. On the radio, that kid didn't sound like an otherwise intelligent medical student who was possibly medically impaired - he sounded like some young stupid kid who thought he was being cute.

There are a lot of overprivileged kids in and around New York City (especially around) who actually are smart (at least have high IQs and go on to become doctors and lawyers), but sound and act similarly. I went to school with many such kids. His parents and grandparents probably do love him, think the world of him, and he probably does build houses with Habitat for Humanity like they said.

But, such kids usually end up doing stupid things thinking they can get away with it, and then wonder why they ended up getting punnished. I do suspect he's just trying to get out of it. And if he does legitimately have seizures, then that will at least keep him out of the sky.

Why? because no matter what happened in the past, Mumsy or Pops was always there to do the bail out or the cover up...

:rolleyes2:

It happens all too frequently -- children raised with no real consequences ("You're grounded for life!" ... One hour later, "Have a good time, Sweetie!")

Right. He's been wondering why he didn't get his ribbon for making a nice landing.

No presumption of innocence around here...
Ok. Tell us, if you think he is innocent why.

To me that ATC recording is very telling that he at very least was not mature or at the most was mentally unsound. Either way he does not belong in the cockpit and he put his pax at risk.

In a criminal court you are presumed innocent until evidence is presented that proves your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

We are hardly without evidence here.

The devil's argument:

It is the pilot's responsibility to bring the aircraft to a safe landing. The pilot did so. No one was hurt.

One way or the other, the pilot will not return to the sky without very careful scrutiny.

... It is the pilot's responsibility to bring the aircraft to a safe landing. The pilot did so. No one was hurt...
Does the outcome determine the wisdom of the decision?

In a round of Russian Roulette, nobody will be hurt 5 times out of 6.
