waiting to hit 40 in a few months to obtain my medical 3rd class cert. No medical issues, what to bring?

Is the AME going to need any medical records from a doctor? I have not gone In years because I am healthy as a horse. I'd have to track my doc down to get records.
 
Why wait until 40, when the medical only lasts two years, when you can get it now, and it will last five?
In July I went to the doctor for a back injury; I also hadn't gone for years, so I had all of the regular checkup stuff done.
PSA sky high, high grade prostate cancer.
But I felt healthy as a horse, except for the back issues.
 
The AME will go by what you put on the medexpress form. It's up to you to be truthful and thorough. Definitely go before you turn 40 and get the 5 year medical. Then go see your primary for a checkup.
 
I got my 3rd class the week before I turned 40. A year before I started flying. It's still good for four more years.

Don't wait.

Get the third class now and BasicMed the next day.

If you haven’t seen a doc is a long time, what better way to convince them you’re aeromedically fit than to have just passed the pre-req?

This is exactly what I did. I waited until 2 months before 40 then got my last 3rd class, just 'cause I knew I could. Went basic med at (almost) 45.

The DPE for my IR ride gave me a brief startle when he looked at my medical and said, "You're over 40, but your medical was 2.5 years ago. I don't think you're eligible for this checkride." I quickly pointed out that I was good per the regulation, but I think he was just seeing if I'd freak out or explain. :D

If someone who’s 39yrs of age gets a 3rd class, (which would be valid for 5 years) and then turns 40 within a few months, is the medical still good for 5yrs or does it lower to 2yrs after the 40th birthday?

Not sure I’ve come across this.
 
It's determined by the examination date. So as long as it's before your 40th birthday it's good for 60 months from the examination date.

The verbiage is "60th month after the month of the date of examination shown on the medical certificate" from 14 CFR 61.23d3(i).

Hopefully the OP returns. I, like others, am interested in why he or she thinks that waiting until age 40 would be better than getting it now. (Even if the duration was not a factor, how would waiting specifically until 40 help?)
 
That way I can basic med asap...plus I doubt I can squeeze in before my birthday. I said few months..meant to say weeks. I was doing advaanced calculus while posting and was not paying attention like I do while talking to ATC

Do you understand if you walk out of the AME office with a Class 3 issuance in hand you can walk right into your BasicMed provider and have them do BasicMed right then and there regardless of your age?

Put differently, the third class medical doesn’t have to expire for you to start BasicMed.

For that matter, a willing AME could issue both at the same time.

Have you held a 3rd class medical before, or is this a first time issuance?
 
If you have a class 3 medical, what's the point of getting a basicmed until just before the class 3 expires?

Say you get prostate cancer or something like that. The minions will say you're grounded on a 3rd class, but you can fly away on BasicMed. Far less hassle and risk.

Yep, or any of a large number of other ailments.

Also, the easiest time for a doctor to sign a Basic Med form is while the ink is still wet on the class 3. Since the FAA has just certified you as fit to fly, he has little need to worry about agreeing with them and approving you for Basic.
