Went there today. Great collection of ww2 and ww1 aircraft, including a B25 and a Junkers trimotor. All of them are in flying condition.

Worth the visit....

I have several hundred photos on my computer from that place. Love that museum! At least once a month they have a historically significant speaker, then go fly the plane they were associated with. If you ever get a chance, go to the Fighter Factory down in Suffolk where they do they work on the planes. He's rebuilding a P-38, ME-26, and several others right now. They also just recently took delivery of B-17 "Chuckie."

Here's some of my pictures from the museum.

How often do they fly? I got to see Lufthansa's Ju-52 (D-AQUI) when I was a kid, but didn't know there were others still airworthy.

Is that where Chuckie went? I heard somewhere in VA, but didn't know it was VA Beach.

I got to see it at the Vintage Flying Museum. I was at FTW doing my B-25 training when the word came down that Chuckie had been sold.

I'll definitely have to check it out when I get there.

Very nice pics. Did you get to the WW1 hangar?

As often as they can. As Bill said, at least every weekend during nice weather they have an organized flying event. And it's not uncommon to turn up during the week and be buzzed by a Spitfire, PBY Catalina, or P-40 as you pull into the parking lot.

Yes indeed! Unfortunately it showed up very shortly after I moved, but knowing how meticulously cared for the rest of his planes are, I'm very certain it is in good hands.

It's a hellofa facility! And it's ever growing. They're always restoring new planes, and they're in the process of building a WWII era hangar they bought and shipped over from Germany.

FWIW, the museum is actually in Pungo, but it's near as makes no difference to Virginia Beach. :yesnod:

Thank you!

They didn't have a dedicated WWI hangar last (several) time(s) I was there. They had all the WWI stuff in the hangar with the P-40, Spitfire, B-25, etc. I think they've made a lot of progress since I was there last.

I'm curious how you found out about it, Bill? It's kind of a hidden gem down on the south side of nothingness.

Just looked it up on Google Maps....is that a huge freaking grass strip they use???

Any idea if they ever open it up for fly-ins?

It is. The Virginia Beach Airport, it's called. 5,000 feet of fairly well maintained grass. I have, on several occasions, seen private aircraft land there. I'm pretty sure for their bigger events they open it up, but I have to imagine if you call and ask, they'd let you land there any time. The guy who owns the museum/Fighter Factory (yes, everything there is independently owned by one guy) is really cool, and seems pretty willing to throw open his metaphorical door for anyone who is interested. Especially if you have experience in or are flying something with a radial or V-12 engine. :yesnod:

Yep, Pungo. Instead of turning left to go to Sandbridge, you go right to go to the museum.

My brother & his family live in Va Beach. He's wanted to go for a while and though I'd enjoy.

The WWI hangar is pretty interesting - The Tri-wings & the pre-30's stuff is out there. It's probably a 2500' walk from the main facility. It also closes before the main building does.

Looks like they're building another hangar next door to the WWI building - the large sign says "Fighter Factory", so maybe they're going to move some of the shop operations up there. Does make me wonder if they're going to use the grass strip if they ever get turbine aircraft in there....

I asked a couple of the volunteers when I was there. One told me that the owner had turned down his request to fly in there, but I suppose YMMV. At one time they used to do banner tows out of there & had plans for other stuff (never happened). There is no restaurant on the field (or close, for that matter).

BTW, the little Messerschmidt motor car was tres cool!

Hmmm....wonder if he needs anyone for co-pilot in the B-25......I'll definitely be checking the place out when move back there this summer!
