Visible combustion inside engine in 4K slo-mo

Interesting, he had to crank it to get the fire to go out.

Cool. Why did the spark plug fire on the exhaust stroke?

It appeared to be firing several times per cycle, inconsistently.

I noticed that too. Wondered if the magneto was just set to fire on both and it'd work itself out because there was nothing to burn on one of them. Ha.

All the Briggs and Strattons fire the plugs on all the up strokes as far as I know.

It's not too unusual to fire waste sparks, though usually the context is another cylinder and distributorless ignition.

very cool - and here I thought "there's nothing new on the innerwebz" ...

like noted above - he missed the checklist item - Intake fire - keep cranking!

It fires off a magneto that is part of the flywheel so it fires every crank revolution - aircraft practice is to run the mags at camshaft speed (1/2 crank).
That's the one. Doesn't hurt anything for it to fire on the exhaust stroke and it simplifies the system.

Destin of Smarter Every Day visited the guys who built the thing and did the original video and got more details on it and shot more high speed video, also ran it on both propane and gasoline...
