I finally got the wife to allow me to reserve an N number. Hopefully this means a plane is in our not so distant future. Reserved myself N12FU. (a nod to another thread on here). Was kinda having my mind in the gutter when i came up with it

That's a good one.

It looked to me when I searched about ten years ago that there weren't many 2-number registrations to be had, or maybe it was 2+1. I danced around my office after wasting an hour to find my 3+1.

I also wanted to get all single-syllables.

You have fox-trot un-i-form.

How long is your reservation good for?

So you're saying I could reserve an "N" number too? Forever? What does it cost? This could be cool.

The N-word is apparently not reserved............ 1 instead of I.
Not sure why I thought to check, N-number, N-word I guess. I'd figure like license plates, some combinations would just not be available.

Could you imagine getting that as a randomly assigned tail number....

If there is a "cool enough" one I guess I should spend the ten dollars to reserve it but I can't think of any. Besides, doesn't this mean I'd have to re-paint the plane? (The fictional plane that I will never own)

Maybe because you can only have two trailing letters.

I really have to wonder about someone who would post what you posted though.

Wanna go halvsies on the fictional plane? ;)

If it is make believe doesn't that mean we each pay nothing?

Here is my imaginary money:

(Can't see it, can you).

Go and get whatever plane for us you think is best. I'd be happy with almost anything.

For about $100, Bengie Phillips at Speedmaster Signs will make you an overlay decal with your new number. Browse around on the Available Numbers page and see if there's one that tickles your fancy. What's your birthday? If it's July 15, then N715KA is available. Plenty of other choices...

Hey, when it comes to public displays of Gov't issued numbers / IDs / Signs.... my mind typically goes towards the offensive or dirty first. And the OP got my mind in the gutter with 12FU anyway.

That N number would be crossing a line........ I'm just pointing out that it IS available. It would have been more funny if it had been assigned. :D

Wait, I can be creative if you give me the "rules". What are the rules?

As in:

How many numbers / letters total and where within the sign can the numbers be placed and how many.

How to Properly Form an N-Number:
N-Numbers consist of a series of alphanumeric characters. U.S. registration numbers may not exceed five characters in addition to the standard U.S. registration prefix letter N. These characters may be:

  • One to five numbers (N12345)
  • One to four numbers followed by one letter (N1234Z)
  • One to three numbers followed by two letters (N123AZ)
To avoid confusion with the numbers one and zero, the letters I and O are not to be used.
Other Requirements

  • An N-Number may not begin with zero. You must precede the first zero in an N-Number with any number 1 through 9. For example, N01Z is not valid.
  • Registration numbers N1 through N99 are strictly reserved for FAA internal use.
  • The FAA no longer issues numbers beginning with NC, NX, NR, or NL. On some older aircraft, these numbers may be displayed in accordance with FAR Part 45.22.

.....

An N-number may only consist of one to five characters, must start with a digit other than zero, and cannot end in a run of more than two letters. In addition, N-numbers may not contain the letters I or O, due to their similarities with the numerals 1 and 0.[2]

N88B8B

A guy around here has two vehicles with license plates like this.

88B8B88
888B88B

Any more than 10ft away and its difficult to tell the B from the 8..........

Gee. just throw me under the bus

By the way, I've had 182WT reserved for a few years now. 182TW wasn't available. Close enough. Besides..."Whiskey Tango" is far sexier than "Foxtrot Uniform". ;)

Really doubt that I'll ever use it though. The thought of a vanity tail number has lost its luster over the years...just as vanity plates have.

Besides, I see a lot of folks flying planes with vanity tail numbers that were someone elses in the past.

And THAT'S just silly!

Now, if I could get something with TWA (Tim Winters' Airlines)...then that would be a different story! :)

For me, I'd love to have N616EM. But another Aggie already has it.

Wonder if our California girl will get the reference?

Or perhaps N10RR, just in case I get a controller with a quick wit.

Me: "Alliance tower, Cherokee one-zero-romeo-romeo"

Tower: "Cherokee oh romeo romeo, where for art though, romeo?"

Well I have Tim Winters' Airlines forever written in my log book. I know that doesn't really help here but at least you know that you are famous in California.

I understand Aggie cult things just wondered what it'd be....

Oh duh, I didn't read the numbers as letters, now I get it.

An N number ending in "GD" could be useful...

"Good Day"
"God ****!"
"Gosh Duh!"
"Going Down!" (yikes!)

;)

I should go hunt for a ham radio 1x2 vanity callsign that starts with November. My "Whiskey Yankee Zero Xray" doesn't work. Plus I always get asked if I'm from Wyoming. No... I just liked the way it sounded in Morse from the available callsigns at the time.

Have seen a number of Hams match callsigns with the airplane...

Anyone know if Zero is valid as a second character? I may have missed it in the cut-n-paste above, but I don't think I've ever heard one.

It would take a lot of messin' around watching every week to grab an "N0" 1x2.

It's not... but even if it were I couldn't reserve my ham call sign. It would be easier to find a number available in both systems and get two vanities... one FCC, one FAA.

Until recently I owned N999NN. Someone sniped it out from under me :(

My point on the sil ah bells.

"Cher-o-kee-Nov-em-ber-sev-en-sev-en-nin-er-u-ni-form-see-err-ah... ...ahhhhhhhhhh... eyyeeeeee forgot..."

I wanted to get my ham call for my plane, N2ELC, but it
seems that the faa doesn't allow one number and three letters.
Damn.

An assigned number N98189, same forward and back, and a lot of controllers get tongue tied and trip over it. Why make it difficult on them. Keep it short.

At least we don't have Canadian call signs, no numbers.
Charlie, foxtrort, foxtrot, uniform, kilo.

But you can get more creative with the letters that way. I know that they do vanity N-numbers, um, C-numbers, too.
