Yes, the chickens are coming home. I will leave the political issue of the VA doling out such 'as candy' to other discussion venues.

Going forward:

Report VA disability. If you have not, do so with your AME.
Avoid VA assignment of any mental health disability, including ptsd.

Female flight surgeon once asked me during my annual physical:
“Got any back problems?”

“No ma’am.”

“Well you will and you need to make sure you document it in your records so you can claim it with the VA on retirement”

10 years and 3,000 hrs later, still no back pain and 0 % in VA disability claimed...guess I was born with good genes. ;)

There is a local air guard commander advisong everyone to get amazing monthly awards. I have about 10 such guys scrambling to disavow their award symptoms at the VAH and HIMS level.

Sigh.

Are they scrambling to give back the money, too?

What is VAH and HIMS?

The VA is pushing disability status, especially PTSD,thinking they are helping the vets. Alls good untill they apply for a public safety job,or pilot medical. Then they have to try and get the disability reversed.

Personal responsibility, and basic honesty. If you are well, take care of yourself, don't look for free ****, it will bite you eventually.

I'm a little surprised that they make as big a deal as they do over PTSD. I know several people who have it, but whose symptoms completely went away when they were prescribed prazosin (Minipress), which is actually a blood pressure medication.

They also say that it takes at least two or three days of missing their meds before the symptoms start coming back, and that they start out pretty mild; so it's not the kind of situation where if they happened to forget their medication that morning, they're going to flip out in flight.

Unless prazosin itself is grounding, I guess it's just another case of the bureaucracy lagging behind science.

I know a few who got have a diagnosis of some level of PTSD for various reasons. The majority are to get early/ better retirement pay, State jobs. The other is a female relative who is going through the PTSD route for her upcoming divorce. I almost laugh out load when she mentions it. In my estimation most of these people have low likelihood of ‘real’ PTSD, none have never been in the military or near a war zone.

Call me a sceptic, but I see angles played to attempt a favorable outcome($$$) down the road. Depending on what one plans to do, a ‘diagnosis’ may haunt them later on.
