I just noticed that you can choose to source the gps through Stratus; BS (before stratus), I'd always used the built in Ipad gps.
Which is better, why?

If you have both, use the stratus and put iPad in airplane mode. Extends battery life on the iPad when the on board radios and receivers are not Turing to transmit or receive.

Yep, you will be amazed at how much longer your battery lasts!

so the stratus and ipad can talk when in airplane mode.
AM doesn't shut off wifi or bluetooth, or they comm some other way?

When you put it in airplane mode you can turn the WiFi back on from the same page. Only the cellular radio can't be turned on until you turn AM off. You need WiFi to connect to the Stratus.

Or just swipe up and hit two buttons...

That's what I do as part of my "pre engine start portable electronics" checklist.

I also set the brightness for the as low as I can stand it. Both that and airplane mode help to extend battery life.

I wish you could put it in airplane mode, but still keep the GPS alive. I'm guessing the GPS is integrated with the cellular chipset, hence the limitation. Too bad.
