Travolta giving his 707 to museum

Given that the plane has apparently become more impractical to continue flying, I think this is a good thing. Glad he had the money and the inclination to save this beautiful and historic bird.

Odds are good that I flew on it at some point, when it wore the Flying Colors of Braniff International Airways.

plus its prob time for the hot section inspections -

Sounds as if he might be interested in one of these....

I suspect that he'll appreciate the tax deduction from that donation. Probably get more for the tax deduction than he would for selling it.
He's donating it to a museum in New Zealand. How would a tax donation work? Does he have income in New Zealand?

Plenty of royalties from grease re-runs.

The donation may go through a qualified US entity.

I read one of John Travoltas interviews. He jokingly said he acts so he can afford to fly....

I guess being a movie star helps feed his addiction to flying.

Maybe I should become a famous movie star.... yeah, that's what I'll do.....:lol::lol:

My guess is there was more truth in that joke than non-pilots will ever realize.

I think donating it to a museum is the smartest thing he can do. The things are virtually impossible to keep flying, and it's got some very cool history behind it. He might be able to sell it, but not for much. And obviously money isn't a big concern for him. I'd do the same in his position.

Probably depends on whether he cares to have another plane like that or not. Really there's not much need for it, but he could probably fit a 757 if he was interested. Me, I think I'd go Gulfstream.

That first pic I posted above shows a jet on the left side. Might be a Gulfstream? He had a G1 or 2 a few years ago. I took off one day at JFK right behind him. I was going to Timbuktu, he was going to Paris. :( :)

Thanks for the pic!

Coincidentally I just read a novel, "Constellation", about the actual crash of one in the Azores back in 1949. It writes about all the individual lives impacted by the crash. Great stuff

I had thought he had a Gulfstream. If he's looking for a cool old airliner, maybe getting a Connie or the like is the way he'll choose to go. Who knows...

Probably get something he can find a sponsor for like he did with the 707.

That would be the way to go if he could. I would wonder how much Quantas paid him vs. what he put in for the 707.

Interestingly, it looks like there's going to be a lot of money and work required before his 707 can make the hop across the pond:

Which makes it seem as though he might've basically mothballed the plane and decided to donate it because he knew it wasn't going to be something he'd bother fixing to fly again. Can't blame him, unless you're flying one for the government (i.e. KC-135) it's probably virtually impossible to keep flying. I'd imagine that, somewhat ironically, it's probably easier to keep a Connie or the like going.

They didn't pay him. He said that it's too expensive to maintain, so he bartered with Quantas to become their ambassador to promote the brand in exchange for maintenance on his 707.

Only one I know is Mulligan, he picked his up in TYS. Probably before my PoA time maybe.

He's owned a Connie before in the mid 80s. Wouldn't be surprised if he went back to that type.

The fact that someone who pilots large aircraft has the poor judgment to be in an evil money cult really bothers me. I'm sure his ownership of the 707 had some kind of mental linkage to Xenu's spacecraft resembling early airliners. Guy is a whack job.

Maybe he bought the JetStar at auction.... 4 engines.... ;)
