Talked to Diana - praise God; she and Tom are OK.

Took out her office, reports of bodies in the streets.

Thanks for posting this, Dave. I am so thankful that Diana and Tom are okay.

Great that they're ok. Sorry about the office. What can I say about the fatalities?

Dave, thanks so much for calling to check on us...we really appreciate it. :)

:) I just lost my part-time job today, but I'm thankful for what I DO have after hearing about all the losses in Joplin today.

MN had a tornado today as well.
news now says 24 fatal in Joplin.
So sad......

There was a short video clip on TWC about a little dog being rescued from a home in Joplin this evening. That just about did Tom in. There will be lots of stories from the aftermath of today's violence...some of them sad and some of them encouraging. Dave, you've been through something similar where you live, so this kind of disaster is something that is still so recent for you.

Gratefully thankful that Tom and Diana are ok, with a heavy heart for the 89 now reported dead.

Diana, very relieved to hear that you and Tom are OK. Been quite concerned since I heard the news. Very sad for the loss of life in Joplin.

It sure tore up that hospital. Mother nature sure let's us know who's in charge!!

I saw the raw video yesterday, just a few minutes after it hit. I could tell things were bad, but until I saw the pictures on the news this morning I didn't really have the full idea.

Will be a long, long, time for that area to get to whatever will become the new normal.

Bad year for storms. I'll stop complaining about the never ending rain here. Glad to hear our inmates survived relatively unscathed.

Diana and Tom, very glad to hear you are both safe.

Our thoughts are with those in Joplin now coping with the aftermath.

+1 from us in Maine, where we've been grousing about displeasure of two weeks of rain and/or drizzle/fog. The NBC Today feeds from Joplin are just heartbreaking. It's not often that a seasoned TV reporter chokes up and goes silent to regroup his oral presentation.

Glad to hear you and Tom are O.K. Diana. I always think of y'all when I fly up to Wisconsin and go near your place. Incredible amount of damage and loss of life; I'm so sorry for the folks affected.

Best,

Dave

Ours little grassfire was several magnitudes less severe than your tornado Diana, we had no deaths and lost a couple dozen homes - the Joplin tornado must feel relatively overwhelming; 2000 structures and 89 lives so far. Anyone know if a relief fund has been set up yet? One thing I did learn is the main thing that will help the survivors get back on track are cash donations.

Donating straight to the Ozarks Red Cross branch would help ensure the money goes directly there:

http://www.redcross-ozarks.org/donate/

EDIT: not sure if the link above will ensure it goes to the Ozarks... the donation page says "This gift will be sent to the chapter serving your zip code." The URL has some encoded digits, so I'm not certain if the donation would go to the billing zip, or the local office encoded in the web address parameters. To be safe, probably best to use a different URL for online donations. This one is for disaster relief, specifically, but not Joplin, specifically.

Details from their blog site:

"How to Help"

eg: Those wanting to help can text the word "CONVOY" to 50555 to make a $10 donation.
or
Text "JOPLIN" to 864833 to make a $10 donation

Dave, please stop sometime and we'll do lunch and catch up on how you and yours are doing. :)

We had more tornado warnings here last night. That really added to the stress of all those people in Joplin who have already been so traumatized.

My daughter went to Joplin last week with a volunteer clean-up crew. They get assigned an address, then assist the homeowner. The job is to carry whatever is left of the house out to the curb so it can be hauled away. The only way to find the address is with GPS - there are no street signs. Only one member of the group needed a tetanus shot, two others stepped on nails but didn't puncture or break any skin.

She said the smell is awful - the rotting vegetation, food, moldy insulation, ..., make the place smell like a sewer. Then there are the scavengers that are crawling around, taking whatever copper pipe, wire, sheetmetal, household items, ..., they can grab - sometimes asking first. Usually, they'd just start picking, even with the homeowner standing right there.

The pictures: there are lots more.

The teddy bear was just something she found in the remains of the house, it needed it's picture taken.

If you look closely, you can see that one of the houses is obliterated, but there are still clothes hanging in what used to be a closet.

The news has gone on to other things but this nightmare is still going on for these folks.
It has been eye-opening talking to even the fire victims here; most people think it is over and all is back to normal - but for those who lost everything, each day is a struggle. They are not in their own home, they don't know when or if they will get a home. They have none of the things that they used to have readily available to make life convenient or enjoyable. Even when they get those things replaced, it never will be the same again. I can't imagine what it would be like to deal with all that plus, as in Joplin, the deaths of friends, family, coworkers.

The lady who my daughter was helping said the only reason she survived was because her son threw her into the tub and dove on top of her. He's still fighting his injuries.

In addition to the loss of friends and family, there are always all the little things in life that get lost - they would find bits and pieces of jewelry, for example. But it wasn't hers - her stuff is gone, in someone else's yard, or in the next county, or picked up by scavengers.

Stuff is replaceable. Lives aren't. I'm glad none of our POA community was hurt. My heart goes out to those who were.
