Tristar
Pattern Altitude
A student and I decided to get on top of the depressing clouds for some VOR work. It's more realistic when they can't see the ground and cheat.
I've discovered that in fact we do have a sun. My student got some awesome pics and even a pilot's halo. After the lesson of "this is what it's like on top of the clouds," we then commenced "this is what it's like in the clouds." We didn't have a whole lot of room for climbs and descents since the bases were around 1500 AGL and the tops were around 3,000 but it worked out. Private pilot students really seem to enjoy flying in them. Except for flying off heading a few times, he did really well in the clouds and had little trouble with VOR orientation.
Maybe one of these days we'll get to see the sun from the ground!
