A student and I decided to get on top of the depressing clouds for some VOR work. It's more realistic when they can't see the ground and cheat. :D I've discovered that in fact we do have a sun. My student got some awesome pics and even a pilot's halo. After the lesson of "this is what it's like on top of the clouds," we then commenced "this is what it's like in the clouds." We didn't have a whole lot of room for climbs and descents since the bases were around 1500 AGL and the tops were around 3,000 but it worked out. Private pilot students really seem to enjoy flying in them. Except for flying off heading a few times, he did really well in the clouds and had little trouble with VOR orientation.

Maybe one of these days we'll get to see the sun from the ground!

What is this thing you call "sun"?
I read about it in textbooks.
I hear that you can take three sightings and with a chonometer you can draw a triangle.....

I too have heard of this thing. its like dry land in water world. I hear it is warm on the skin. I want some of this sun too. Send some east.
 
I saw a bit of sun last week, but then again I was in Honolulu for (only :() a day.

Supposed to have sun here in DC area later this week. We'll see. At least the "global warming" is gone from my yard.

On Friday I logged 3.5 actual with 3.2 IMC. By the time I was out of the clouds it was night, so no evidence of the sun. Saturday was a lot of sun, and then into some nasty clouds. But Sunday... Sunday was flying in, out, and through some of the most glorious white puffy buildups.

These airplane things are wonderful. Oh that we can see such works in nature that previously neither man nor beast were able to is the most fun part of the instrument rating, and flying in general.

You're too far West. Adam. While you and much of East coast were nailed with the most recent snow storm Maine was in the 40s and 50s with this thing called sun. We did get only moderate rain during the past weekend while NY, NJ, MA, NH were flooded or clearing trees. I'm marveling at those 8" tall blades growing out of my plantings adjacent to the house's foundation. Mud season came early in 2010.

There is no sun in the West. I repeat, no sun. No sun at all. Nobody is to move west in search of more sun. Nope, the place is too crowded already.

Just so we are clear, there is no sun out here and it wasn't sunny today at all and the sun wasn't in my eyes keeping me from getting a view of the airport until I was about eight miles out. Nope, no sun. Sure was bright out though...

Last week I flew from LA to SF for dinner, flew back the same day. I've also been known to routinely go places and not spend more than 12 hours there before leaving. ;)
 
Hi Everyone,

When I woke up this morning, I noticed it was very bright in my bedroom. I kept trying to turn the light off with no luck. I then opened my eyes, and I think I have spotted this "sun" you all have been speaking of. I will be investigating further. Be safe out there.
 
I know this sun of which you speak. It tried to kill me this morning by blinding me on my way to my lab. Godzilla could have been in front of me and I wouldn't have known any better.

Silly Ohioans. You are always supposed to live east of where you work especially this time of year when it's equinox season.

Back when I was young and foolish, I flew from New York to LA for lunch, came back the same day.

(The friggin' LA office failed to set up any appointments for me after the lunch program. We were supposed to visit clients that afternoon and the next day. Nada. Color me pleased..... )

Last week flew back to the home drone in the Chief, winds were calm, all was well.

I heard a fellow in a TriPacer in the pattern landing Runway 9 (which is less preferred as it is downhill).

I was 10 miles out (yeah, about 10 minutes form the pattern :skeptical: ) and announced that I'd be entering left downwind for 27.

Nice entry on a 45, all is great, turn and slip final, over the numbers, straighten out... YIKES!

I could not see a thing -- that Big Yellow Thing was right in front of me.

I held it off until the wheels sorta touched and bounced to a landing.

No wonder he was landing on 9!! :eek:
 
It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood in the west... way west I mean.

What are these things you guys call clouds?? IMC??:confused:
