...and as of today I've landed at all of them.

I decided to start this project a few months after I got my private. I needed to fly to keep my proficiency up, but was bored just flying around my local area. I figured it'd be a good way to see the state and experience a variety of different sizes and layouts of airports. I've had the last two hanging out there for more than a year. I've found enough to do between trips, lunch meets, training, and Lifeline flights that I didn't get around to it. Decided today was the day, so I took the rent-a-wreck Cessna to the NW corner of the state and hit 3G8 and 3H5.

It's been a lot of fun seeing all corners of the state. My one regret is that I didn't take photos of every airport and maybe keep a journal. I think it might be worthy of a book if a guy had good enough photography skills. A number of them were just touch and goes, so stopping and taking a picture would've added many hours to the project. I often would take half a day and go hit five that were relatively close together.

Unsurprisingly, ORD was the most memorable. I (somewhat foolishly) flew in there in April of 2020 when the numbers were way down from COVID with about 120 hours in my logbook. My second favorite trip was to Cairo & Metropolis. The confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi, the barge traffic, and the old city were cool to see, and I spent a couple hours flying the rivers. MDW was another fun one that was accomplished as part of my IFR long XC.

Surprisingly, the big airports I assumed would be hard to do wound up falling into place quite easily. The grass strips were harder to get because it took the right combination of nice weather for a few days, a rented (slow) airplane, and free time. They also generally tended to be the shortest an most challenging. Nothing is harder than taxiing around ORD though lol.

And finally 3H5 Erie. Actually listed as an "ultralight field"; I debated for a long time whether I should include it. Listed as 2000', it has probably a 1000' displaced TH on the north and lots of obstruction clearance so it was NBD.

Nice. We have over 200 here. I haven't even thought about trying it because I know some are not trike friendly and pretty short. Barb (OneShort) did it. Finished in 2006. Landed at Detroit Metro, and then the next day 6Y9 for the reopening fly in. Though North Fox and Two Hearted were opened after that, and not sure if she returned from out west to hit those or not.
 
Pretty bad ass you've hit them all! Over the last 4y I've probably hit about 20 in IL, max.

Do you.. by chance.. have a picture from your landing at KDTG? :)

Ha... no pictures there. I did actually do it in the lance, but it was a touch & go. Felt like landing on a sidewalk. The narrowness of the runway and the house at the end make it feel like you're going REAL fast.

Does any group in Illinois offer a prize for such a feat. I know here, the Iowa Aviation Promotion Group has their Fly Iowa Challenge which awards prizes to pilots who visit all 109 airports in Iowa.

No, sadly. Illinois' division of aeronautics has essentially no budget so far as i can tell.

I just requested the Wisconsin "passport". There's about 10 I visit up there at least once a year, and could easily hit enough to get a t-shirt out of them.
 
Congratulations. I finished up the North Dakota public airports (we have 89, quite the discount from your 101) in October 2021. I think my only major post here about it was the two-day Cub road trip I did to hit all the distant grass strips without a bunch of out-and-back hours. It's fun looking back on the different planes, different circumstances, and frankly different pilot who logged the first few airports compared with the last few.

This 100%. It's been fun reliving it. It's also interesting that at least half of the airports blend together in my mind, but several I have very vivid memories of. It was a great exercise for a starting pilot and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I feel like they may have been painting themselves as well.

We had a citation land at c81 today. They made sure the grass was cut. Your "rustic" description nailed it.

Congrats on reaching your goal. Why do you say “…ORD was the most memorable. I (somewhat foolishly) flew in there…” what do you see as foolish about it?
 
Looking back, I'm not sure a 120 hour pilot, not instrument rated, only having held a certificate for 6 months, should have been flying into the busiest airport in the world. Granted, their traffic was down like 60%, so it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. The controllers only seemed mildly annoyed. I did okay in the air, but taxiing was terrifying. Got a couple comments and laughs from airline pilots, so that was pretty cool.

As Ari mentioned, you look back and realize you were a different pilot and even a different person five years ago. I did things that while they definitely helped me grow, were probably not the best adm. For example, I took off for Florida in the winter with my family when I didn't even have my plastic card yet.
 
Texas has over 300 public airports. Nope, not going to attempt this!
I was about to look up the number for Texas, but you beat me to it. So, 300+ airports spread across the Wide Wide World of TX, nah, that’s just a bridge too far! Over the last 17 years flying my RV-8 around Texas from my Houston base, I’d guess I’ve bagged 100+… but I just can’t hit ‘em all in this lifetime.

It's way over 400 if you count all airports!

Years back my brother decided to ride his motorcycle to every county seat in Montana (56) with in a year. He took photographs in front of every courthouse as proof.
Montana has 126 registered airports . They range from on the border Canadian crossing ports grass strips ,to wilderness mountain ,to prairie grass and paved controlled strips. One class C ,several class D and lots of paved city/county airports.

According to the FAA, there are 66 public-use airports in the state of New Mexico.

I know there has to be at least that many landing strips, private ones as well as the temporary ones.

The FAA also reports that New Mexico airports support 4,816 pilots and 3,009 registered aircraft.
 
My goal was to land at all the public below sea level airports. That was foiled by non-notamed Xs on the runway at KSAS (and haven't been able to get an answer from the owner about the actual status)

Rochelle is my favorite airport restaurant in the state. I stopped for lunch there on the way back from Rockford and called Teresa to tell her we bought a plane.

I'd like to go back to Cairo, maybe even spend the night :eek:.

Mine was to PIA. The tower controller tried to squeeze me in front of a CRJ. I was too slow. They had to go around. I told my cfi when I got back and he said "meh. They needed the practice" :D

I'd still like to know what the Captain told the passengers :biggrin:
 
I'm based at Geneseo (3G8), had we known you were coming we would have celebrated with you. If you had come one day later you would have seen over 50 Stearman stopping in for lunch.

That’s pretty impressive, Jim. There are 103 to 107 airports in Georgia depending on whose list you are looking at. I’ve been to about 65 of them. If I ever get my own plane, maybe I’ll take a run at it. My best bet may be to go back up to Connecticut and renting a plane and hit the two grass strips I’m missing. :)
 
Brookeridge LL22 is having their open house tomorrow (Saturday) 10-3.
