the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

Is there anyway to look up a plane from a partial tail number? I was flying the cub yesterday and this really slick yellow bi-plane (not a Stearman) formed up on me (super loose) then departed. I only remember the last 3 characters. I thought it might be Gambit’s Pitts Model 12, but the tail number is different. Maybe a Waco? I’m sifting though my footage to see if I got any of it.

If you go to ADS-B exchange you should be able to see aircraft near yours in the history viewer. FlySto does the same if you import your track log from ForeFlight though not sure where it cuts off between near and not near.

I believe so. I have a picture of my Mom in a J-3, but could only see part of the tail number (the picture was from a long time ago when N numbers could be smaller). IIRC, I was able to look it up on the FAA page for searching N numbers. I don't remember what wildcards I used.

Can I do this based on location and time? The cub doesn’t have ADS-B out. The other aircraft did.

http://aviationdb.com/ Use contains in the criteria column. It'll return all that 'contain.' Like put 3456, you might get a 13456, 23456 etc.

I picked up 2 popup IFR's the past 3 flights. Maybe I should just file ahead of time the next few.

At the risk of invoking bad karma, I've actually had pretty good luck recently dealing with telephone support from Fidelity, RCN, and a couple of others.

That’s probably a good idea. Could increase your chances of getting good weather. Kinda like a when you throw something away that you’ve had for just about ever but never use, the next day something happens that you need one.

My favorite snack back in the past was frozen peas. It's been a few years, but I would still enjoy a fistful or two while watching a movie.

Once they thaw out, they are not as good...

I recently found out that the climate where I live has been secretly trying to kill me for the past 5 years that I've lived here. It may be time to find the next place. Someplace with less humidity than a swamp, and better air quality than the radioactive emissions of a bygone bomb factory. Where is Iowa?

Iowa is humid.
 
Iowa also has quite a few gray days in winter as well, if you're partial to regular sun.
 
Harvest has officially started for me. Took out 68 acres of beans today. Went surprisingly smooth for a first day... knock on wood. New little tractor excelled in its role setting up and powering the bin-fill conveyor. Wish I had bought that thing 10 years ago.

First night sleeping in a house in a bed in 2 weeks after the hunting trip. Literally saw my life flash before my eyes. Had lightning strike the mountain 30 feet in front of me. Surprisingly, no thunder. Sounded like a firework. It also looks exactly like it does far way as it does close up. Except for the 10' of flames. Wicked cool. But would rather not see it again.

Having just driven i-80 through both... I couldn't tell you when one ended and the other began.

I won't recommend western nebraska/far northeast Colorado. Holy pig/cattle urine batman.

Seriously, though, what kind of information are you looking for? I lived in southern Minnesota up until a few years back, and did my pilot training in northern Iowa. I know a thing or two about the general area. This might be worthy of it's own thread, though. :)

I once saw lightning strike open ground about 50 feet in front of my house and it was just a big split/crack noise, and rocks the size of my head shot up into the air along with a very visable smoke ring that shot up around 30 feet into the air.

I found the strike hole but no sand melted by the lightning.
 
Anyone flown to Ohio State University airport on game day? I wonder if there’ll be any place to tie down. I’ll eventually call them to ask but expect an unreliable answer.

Anyone have a reliable search method for this site? I’m certain I’ve seen a thread on flying over the Rockies without a super or turbo charger

Racerx- you certain that wasn’t an alien weapon discharge? Soundless lightning not far far away seems impossible

Landed there a couple of times but never on game day. Nice facility. They have a pretty big ramp on the west side of the FBO.

In my experience, Wisconsin has the best air. Montana is probably a close second.

I had no idea how much dust is in the air until I visited the Great White North. Hot and dry is my choice, however...

I didn't have a serious question. I do know where Iowa is. We are planning to travel for a few years in the near future to find a better climate. When the time comes I'll ask in a "real" thread. Thanks though.

I would prefer a cooler climate too.
 
Yep. Desert Southwest is my thing.

I've been through the coldest Winters in Korea and Alaska and record heat in Texas and Kuwait. The temperature doesn't bother me as much as the contents of the atmosphere. -10F and 5% humidity is comfortable weather just as much as 113F and 10%.

Air that contains a lot of dirt or water is just no fun...

In my boating days in South Florida, Keys and Bahamas, I experienced three really close lightning strikes. I remember one quite vividly: I was sailing along in poor visibility in light rain, when suddenly, there was a loud "sssffffpppfffft" sound and a big flash of light. I don't recall any other sound. I recall that just before the lightning strike the standing rigging of the mast started to make a weird sound.
 
I left the chicken soup on the counter overnight for 10 hours. I put it in the fridge this morning before breakfast.

Would you eat it for dinner tonight?
