Turns out good deeds still do exist in this day and age.

I lost my pilot certificate recently and wondered if someone found it whether or not they would send it back.

I did not expect THIS to happen. I will be using their return address to send "Shelby" a special gift as a thank you / reward.

Gave me a huge smile this morning when I looked in my mailbox.

Enjoy:

See if she wants to go for a ride! Might be the start of something good. :)

While bad things can happen to the best of people, I've found that most people are good and will do the right thing. I remember back in San Diego I rode a motor cycle every day. I had a briefcase that I would bungee cord to the rack on the back of my motor cycle. One day I got home and it was not there. Had no idea where I lost it, tried to retrace my steps but no joy. I gave it up as a lost cause. 3 days later I came home and there, stuck between the front door screen and the inside door was my briefcase. Someone found it, had to break the lock to get in to it and found some identifying papers, brought it to my house and left it there. No note or way to identify the good sam. Maybe I'll get burnt but I prefer to thing that people are good and to give them every chance to be good.

I love people who do the right thing...

Refreshing to see some good parenting. World needs more of that.

Agreed. I suggest including an "atta-boy!" note to Mom and Dad for their role in teaching this young lady so well.

A reminder that when you change your address with the FAA (you do remember that you have to do that within 30 days of moving to exercise the privileges of your certificate, right???), it might just be worth the $2 to get a new certificate with the new address on it!

Prolly overreacting, but I'm a little teared up. Very cool!

Outstanding. Give that girl an airplane ride!

Ok, so the offer of a plane ride is fine idea, but keep in mind that flying isn't for everyone, and maybe her parents don't like small planes for whatever reason. I'd make the offer, but not push it at all.

Part of good parenting is not spoiling the child every time they do something right. It isn't like the kid returned a big wad of cash or something truly amazing like that. I'd suggest that an appropriate "reward" would be to offer to thank her in person and take the kid out for a nice ice cream sundae, or something like that. The child would know the kind act was appreciated, but not have high expectations of a reward just for doing the right thing.

I wonder if something the parents are thinking about is that they see this young female pilot (still a relative rarity, and very nice to see a few participating on POA) and think this is a person who would be a good role model for their daughter to meet.

Cool! Even if you don't give her an airplane ride maybe you could offer to show her the airplane.

Thanks for sharing Kimberly. I have a granddaughter that I hope would do the same thing. She is really a sweety.

That is just so cute!

How precious. Call up the aopa and see if they have any junior pilots wings you could send her.

How do we know Shelby is a girl? The only ones I know are male, I do faintly recall a female Shelby from my childhood though.

I think a flight would be the perfect reward !
Not just a reward for returning your license but even better, meeting a young lady who has accomplished a dream of becoming a pilot just because she wanted to. This might just be a life changing event for the little girl in a number of ways.. I really think you should offer her and a parent a flight. Don't forget your camera for plenty of pictures.. Let us know what happens.

Speaking as a picture framer (retired), myself, I would definitely frame that note along with a copy of your license, much like the photo you posted. When your older, you will treasure it even more.

The young lady should be rewarded somehow. The airplane ride Dave suggested sounds great, but anything you can do to re-enforce the behavior would be well worth it. Do it as soon as you can. Remember what that little piece of plastic cost you when deciding what you are going to do.

Seriously cool.

Kimberly, how about posting her address and having us all send her a thank you note also. She would get a kick out of seeing all the states represented. Turn it into a real learning experience. You could send the address via PM or email so as to not to post it publically. We could send her pictures of our airplanes and stuff. I'm ready to send it tonight!

Or everyone send their letters to Kimberly and she can deliver them to the little girl...

That seems like a better idea. As a parent I would appreciate the support but not my Childs name and address posted on a forum.

I will send Kim 5 bucks towards a ride, if the child wants & parents agree - who will join me? This way she won't be out $ on the deal.

This is a neat idea. I was going to send a color print out (just on paper) of a photo so she could see that girls can fly - but you are right, I should offer to take her too.

OK so my original idea now seems lame. I didn't want to send money since cash in the mail is a no-no. I know they shop at Safeway (a large grocery store chain in California). This particular Safeway in Windsor has a Jamba Juice (smoothie chain). I was going to get her a gift certificate, to Safeway, and tell her to enjoy some smoothies or ice cream on me.

But you are right - how do I know it is a girl?

Maybe you should fly/drive up and meet her/him to find out for sure. Whether a boy or girl, it was still a really nice thing to do.

I'm not going to ring their bell, I think that is kind of stalker-ish. But I will send a nice letter, small gift, photo, and offer of a plane ride with her parents as her escort of course. I won't use "she" or "he" in the letter, just the name Shelby.

Kim, see post #26. ;)

I know, but, as someone else said, immediacy is important here. I don't check my mail that often, and it appears this was post marked last Friday, so I did want to "hurry" my reply.

I can PM people my work mailing address, but I live alone and don't want to post or PM my apartment address. And I certainly won't share the little girl's address.

If anyone wants me to PM them my address, let me know, and then I will.

All great ideas, a thank you note as a minimum is in order.

Something to consider, if you got a replacement certificate from OKC, then this one is now invalid. Your replacement will have a current issue date, and that's the one FAA will expect you to carry.
