Texas gov. shoots, kills 'wily' coyote during jog

Some of us feel that the only good coyote... is a dead one. You'll think that after loosing a significant portion of a herd to them.

If the coyote was close enough for the Governor to hit with a .380 (even with a laser), then that coyote was probably really close. Good call in my opinion.

For those of you who are worried about the poor coyotes. Well ,they will be around till the end of time along with the cockroaches.
They are survivors. And for they're health need to be thinned out by us every once in a while.

I wasn't worried about the poor coyote. I was thinking that it was humorous that a grown adult would be afraid of one.

If you fly to Midland Airpark (MDD - nice airport), watch out for the coyotes! There are about 10 of them that we were told live there. Landed there about a week and a half ago in a Cardinal, and there were two of them less than 30 yards off the runway watching us with no apparent fear. After we passed, they ambled on to the runway. I have a picture of it somewhere here.

For his puppy yeah, but according to his quote he was afraid for himself.
Have you ever shot a .380? I carry one in my pocket on occasion. If the coyote was that close, it could be rabid, or hungry. Not good, yes a bit scary.

No and I've seen coyotes when walking near where I live. Not scary to me at all.

try out in the woods at dusk, calling coyotes, when they start howling back and forth to each other and you suddenly realize you're surrounded. Raises the short hairs on the back of my neck every time ...

I think the calling coyotes are cool. There's a road and an elementary school out here called "Singing Hills". :)

We have a couple of dens at KADS. Management says they are necessary or we'd be up to our ass in rabbits. Hobby (KHOU) has at least two rabbits under every runway/taxiway sign on the field.

Nature in action; that field is absolutely thick with prairie dogs. That's one place that needs a pack of hungry coyotes!

I've had them a few yards away while skiing, hiking, etc. Didn't particularly bother me; I thought they were kind of cute. I didn't know that they came up that high in the mountains before I saw them.

Maybe the governor should go running at Hobby then, if he feels sufficiently threatened by the bunnies he can reduce their numbers and pick up a couple more votes.

I own a Ruger LCP with a Crimson Trace laser. If he was able to shoot a coyote with the damn thing the coyote was pretty much ON TOP OF HIM. Those of you that have shot the gun or even seen a coyote would understand. Double action only with a very long awkward trigger. Very short barrel - small grip. It's a very difficult gun to shoot with any sort of accuracy (even with the laser).

I've never had a coyote get close enough to me that I'd be able to hit it with a Ruger LCP. If it got that close - and I was walking a dog - chances are - it needs shooting.

We have a lot of coyotes at our airport. They will sit and watch you taxi by without moving.

I used to raise beef cattle and I never lost a calf to coyotes.

I once got concerned because one of my dogs went out to meet a coyote out in the middle of a field. I was afraid the coyote would hurt the smaller dog, but they started playing. I've never had problems with them.

I am saddened by people who claim to be sportsmen and yet will go out of their way to kill any wild animal they see.

I had a neighbor whose mutt would jump the fence and run with the coyotes all night, coming back in the morning none the worse for wear. It was very odd.

A friend of mine had a newborn calf that was being harassed by a coyote. The cow was able to keep it at bay until my friend could get out there to scare it off. It might have turned out differently if it had been a pack of coyotes instead of just one.

Your coyotes must be different than our coyotes up at our ranch then. One year we lost 60+ goats to them when my uncle was sick and couldn't protect them. I think a couple of calves have been lost over the years, but it's the smaller farm/ranch animals that they really threaten. I don't really consider myself a sportsman. If a coyote shows it's head at our place, it'd better be ready to move really fast.
