This morning before work, we got to talking about slips.
I found this great little airplane ornament to illustrate to Mrs. 6PC how they are done.
I covered when and how they are used but it is a bit more challenging to explain some of the concepts.

Then I quizzed her and had her explain it back to me. I really think I am a good teacher.

It is a crime to impersonate a CFI you know! :D

I sometimes wonder what my kids' teachers think. My daughter watched this event unfold this morning.

I am going to pick her up from school and the teacher will say "Your daughter makes up some strange things today she said daddy set a fire in the kitchen this morning when showing mom how to fly a plane."

I will be all "These kids have quite the imagination"

I feel I really understand it now. Who wants to let me practice in their plane?!?!

When he was discussing forward slips, did B refer to his first flight with me to deliver Murphy the PnP St. Bernard?

I still chuckle at the image of him being braced against the door so he wouldn't fall out and hearing "ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod" over the intercom.

During a teachers conference many years ago, my son's teacher was concerned about his imagination. She said he was claiming that I was an airline pilot. I said that well yeah, I was. Sometimes kids do tell the truth.

I'm just glad they were able to get the my seat cleaned.

This makes a lot more sense now.
I didn't realize the images were not showing up.

Fixed.... I think (They were always there for me)

Hahaha ok cool. I thought maybe I was missing something, even tried a different browser. Come on mister web dev guy, learn how to attach pictures!!! :-D

I know! I know! She tried slipping with flaps and it all went wrong.

It's said that as individuals, we are our grandfathers. Meaning that many parts of our personality and character are taught to us by our parents (especially dad's) who were taught by our grandfathers.

Someday, I'd be honored to meet Grand-6PC and see where some of Bryan's madness comes from.

And though he's just in 2nd grade, I'm starting to wonder how compounded this is gonna be when Mini-PC gets into his teens.

But don't ever stop Bryan, it's this madness of yours that makes you a valuable part of this community

That's just awesome!

You can practice in the 'kota. It's used to the abuse...right now the wings are held on with duct tape (still haven't fixed it after the trip to the Minam lodge). Ya wanna solo it? Duct tape doesn't have a life-limit does it?

I love the fact that we scare the living crap out of students with the whole "cross the controls during landing and you will surely DIE!" thing. Then we teach them about slips And can't understand why they can't\won't learn it.
I do have to say I love the visual aids. I may have to file the serial numbers off and do it myself one of these days.

Quick question. And this is neither here nor there.
Um. Anyone know how to get like a sort of a burned mark out of granite?

Not sure what happened. Probably the prior home owner or something. I actually just noticed it this morning.

Weird.

Cross control (slip) = safe, exaggerated rudder command (skid)+ low and slow= death. I wish CFIs would get that correct.

The folks that make cultured granite can polish it out for you. It really isn't granite...but then you knew that...right?

Oh, I was just kidding, It didn't leave a mark. I kinda wondered if it would. It burned for 15-20 seconds. But nothing.

I don't know what it is. The realtor went back and forth over if it was granite or silestone and which is better. I said I don't care, It has a garage and pool and a man cave which means 3 places I can have a beer do awesome things, the rest is hers.

Only when the exaggerated rudder command is combined with an exaggerated pitch up to maintain level flight.

Yep, that's the slow part, and even then you have to be low enough to not be able to recover.

Is it a true statement that
Slipping does not increase the likelihood of a stall or a spin if stalling happens in the slip configuration?

I know skidding is a no no but I was preached to never be uncoordinated.
And then we practiced slips and I was scared the whole time.

slips are benign, jus' keep yer nose down

To explain it aerodynamically is more complicated than to teach it by feel.

Have someone demonstrate a cross controll stall to you.

I would show you a video of a King Air crash on short final from a cross control stall, but I want you to know how to do it right before I show you how not to do it.

I am flying with a CFI on Sunday just for a burger run. I will ask him to show me one.

If you stall in a slip, the low wing has to come level (at that time the slip becomes a skid) and continue over the top of the plane to get into a spin. This typically doesn't happen and the plane stabilizes into a bobble even if you hold the slip controls.

Having stalled in a slip (at altitude -- screwed up power on stall), that's literally true, but it will scare the HELL out of a newbie pilot when the stall breaks over the top. The high wing drops. Fortunately not that quickly in a 172, but check out BruceAir's videos to see what can happen in higher performance aircraft.

note to self: review these videos when we have time.

I've had questions about the slip/stall myself. I know my instructor has explained the difference to me at least once, but it's been a few months since I last flew and my brain has reset to zero on this subject since then.
