Superbowl and Atlanta area aviation

PDK basically issued a no-fly memo to all GA pilots and flight schools on the field a few weeks ago.

We had the same at RYY. I'm waiting for the $$ offer to get out of my Hangar for that period. I'd gladly go somewhere else if they gave me a little incentive.
 
I know arrival and departure slots at PDK are $1500 bucks each. IFR or VFR
 
Some interesting things from the Super Bowl in our area last year (Twin Cities)

1.) Our Vikings let us down
2.) Our Vikings seem cursed

...sorry, that got the best of me. More aviation related...

1.) Quite awhile out (seemed like 2, maybe 3 weeks) they dropped flyers are all the airport FBO's municipal buildings, etc. They were quite clear about the TFR and the escort you would receive in the air, how to respond, etc.
2.) The local deputies that drive through the airport were asked to now report anything suspicious - especially open hangar doors. They seemed very concerned about planes being stolen or tampered with. I think in a 2 week period he stopped by 3 times to make sure I was in the hangar or over in our little municipal building.
3.) On the day of the TFR people were having fun listening to local Unicom/Guard, looking at flight aware, etc just to see if someone would bust it.
4.) The FBO's cranked and I mean cranked parking fees. A guy flew a SR22 in, the fee was so high at a Delta (FCM) that he came back to our little airport and dropped off the passenger and headed back west.
5.) Most of them seem to be flying in for the parties.
6.) Several people staged their planes and parked them outside at the smaller airports and rented out their hangars for a week. Kinda worked best for the Cirrus types that will fit in smaller hangars. Some people made a lot of money there.
7.) Lots of people rented out homes as well. Its a risk (will it get trashed) but some people made tons of money.
8.) Nothing prevents you from driving out to the airports you already have access to. It was cool to drive out, go through the gate and look at lines of Biz Jets parked on closed runways and taxiways. If you've never seen the large lighted closed runway signs, here's your chance.

There are only so many seats in that stadium. It's filled on a regular basis and none of this nonsense goes on.

Our neighbor works for United. They have 12 heavies in each day at ATL (not a major hub for them). For the Superbowl they will have 42 or 44 a day. Plus the regular smaller, regional jet flights too.

Where are all these people staying?

Most regular season attendees are local. Most Super Bowl attendees are not.
 
A lot of people come that are not going to be at the game itself, or are not that interested in football. Think half-time show, whoever the "celebrity" is this year likely has an entourage, plus the stage hands, dancers etc.. Parties leading up to game day, news crews, businesses hosting their most important customers. I suspect the "adult" industries have an influx of professionals too.
 
I have heard line service horror stories about ramps full to capacity of only G4/G5s and basically running out of fuel in the fuel farm, barely squeaking by as 8000gal fuel loads showed up through the day. That was years ago from a Super Bowl in DFW...
 
Man, I am so glad I don't live in a city that hosts a super bowl. Also glad that president's don't come around often o_O:D
 
This is just insanity... all so 22 guys can run around a grass field for a few hours. Thankfully they’ll never host the game anywhere near me.
 
Here's another superbowl TFR gotcha:

Sometimes the stadium is pretty close to the main Bravo airport. But they still center the TFR over the stadium (seems kinda dumb in this case).

At first look its almost like they overlap. So that then can lead to two more mistakes...that the TFR is much like the Bravo (but it extends to the ground!) and that the outer ring is in the same place as the Bravo (which it is not, sometimes by just a few miles). I recall one airport (KCFE) being a case like this for the Twin Cities Super Bowl. It is just outside the mode C veil and outter Bravo shelf. But during the super bowl would be just within the TFR. Just another reason to stay on the ground or keep considerably farther away.
 
Given that it's going to be pretty much impossible to get into or out of, out of any local airports from the traffic restrictions, I'd say the chances of a TFR bust are pretty low. Having said that, MB Stadium is about 10 miles north of ATL, so the 30 mile TFR ring will be in airspace that is Class E normally.

I'm either giving up aviation for the week or getting out the weekend before and going somewhere else.
 
Charlotte is hosting the GOP convention in 2020. I am not looking forward to that at all.
 
My home field is listed; KGVL. I thought I might just head north for a day or two but I wonder if my rented tie down would get taken before I return.

I used to fly out of KPYM and every 2 weeks during the middle of August Obama would go to the Vineyard and all scenic flights and nearly all flight training at 10-12 airports would grind to a halt. I remember sitting in the office of my flight school listening to the CTAF and without fail people would come in without a transponder code and the airport manager would go out to them and give them a number to call.
 
Been there, done that, worked a Super Bowl.
The jets will be everywhere. I suspect that PDK is going to be ground zero.
Trust me, the dollar value of the aluminum that will be there will blow your mind. This is one of those events that celebrities and billionaires just do not miss.
 
The Angry Orange likes to winter in PBI, as does my employer. Makes for a huge pain in the butt. BCT and SUA are slammed during those times.

I am based at FTY and the FBO sent us an email that they will require 72 hours notice to pull an airplane out of the hangars from Wednesday until Tuesday following the game! I would hate to see what the ramp charges are going to be for FTY, PDK, RYY for the week! I flew into Southern Pines, Pinehurst, during the US Open, $175 per night and the ramp was empty!! I have flown into a couple Super Bowls, Jacksonville and Detroit, I picked airports that were a little bit farther out and the fees weren't too bad. :)

When the Superbowl was in Houston they had fewer restrictions, but still way over the top, and traffic was barely any different from normal. Totally pointless overkill.
 
I still can't find a copy of the actual NOTAM. I see airport guidance, but not the NOTAM defining the vertical limits of the 10 and 40 (?) mile rings.

<edit>I will say that AOPA sent a link to a map of the extents of the TFR. My home airport is at 11:00 and 1/2 mile outside the TFR.

For a lower end attendee I’d land a ways out an get a ride in. The VIPs can pay those high fees, with congestion. One just has to be creative with ground transportation.
