Southwest Airlines pilot arrested at Georgia airport for allegedly showing up to work intoxicated

Arrested at 7AM, charged with driving under the influence.

Nope. His job isn’t necessarily in danger. He’ll go into their HIMS program and be a prized possession.

He will be eternally grateful and keep the other prized possessions all grateful.

It’s kinda weird.

Unless he’s old, then he’ll just retire.

Article says he’s got 13 years to go.

That’s a twist…probably not his first time either

Not going to swear to it but I think HIMS will only be an option if you ask for help BEFORE you get busted. After the fact not so much.

There were the northwest pilots who got busted flying drunk. One ended up as an FO At American. So there is precedent.

How many people get into HIMS before they get caught?
No idea. But I’ve flown with 3 HIMS “graduates” in the last two years. I imagine their families encouraged them to get help or they finally realized they had a problem and needed help.

I don’t know a lot of details but I know you can not drink for the rest of your career and there is a fairly high level of random testing done afterwards.

That is what I understand as well

That entire crew got their certificates taken away, and had to start at zero hours and get all their ratings again.

i cannot discuss it due to an NDA, but I can say for a fact that it will take a while, but If he does what he needs to and abides by the stipulations put on him he can return to the cockpit.

And that is exactly what is wrong with the FAA medical system. It keeps people who may have had a misdiagnosis as a kid from pursuing a flying career but lets a pilot who tried to fly a jet loaded with passengers while knowingly drunk get back in the cockpit again. Does anyone on here really want this guy ever flying your family around regardless of what “stipulations” he meets?

Considering the hoops he'd have to jump through to get back into the cockpit, I would have no problem with him flying my family around.

Both will have to prove to the FAA that they are medically fit to operate an aircraft. Depending on what the kid was "misdiagnosed" with, his path may be significant easier. But the villain in such cases is the professional who gives the misdiagnosis, not the FAA for believing it.

He jumped through a lot of hoops already to get to the point where he was about to fly passengers drunk. It’s not a matter of if he can jump through enough hoops to convince a doctor that he gave up alcohol or not. His inability to make appropriate decisions that affect the flying public should disqualify him from returning to the cockpit. It’s likely that this isn’t his first time flying while impaired. It’s just the first time he was caught. He deserves no sympathy and should never be granted PIC privileges again.

Well, if that's gonna be their reaction, it's probably more fun to fly under a bridge.

  • Haha
Reactions: WDD

Nope. Legacy airlines will help them get their certs back, rehire them, help them get their medical back, it’s really not a job threatening issue.

I know of folks busted free basing heroin who did just that. Quite a few cocaine users and frankly quite a few marijuana users.

In this case, however, they didn’t violate any FARs, so if they want, just do HIMS stuff and get back to flying in 8 months.

Probably get nearly full pay the whole time. This is not an “if” situation, it’ll happen if they want to.
