Between the idiotic polls (which is better, a Diamond DA20 or DA40?, for example), and the spite and predictablity of the political posts (on the level of: Yeah? Well, your mother wears combat boots...), I will confine my activities to PoA

There's been some really good threads here lately, such as the excellent discussion of stall, and yes, even Texas Frito Pie (although I'm still convinced that the last choice -- that it's a plot to poison the rest of us -- is true) :cheerswine:

I might even have to buy a bigger avatar or something to show my support!

Just thought I'd let folks know that if you want to find me, you're going to have to look for me here.

Sorry for the rant: I feel better now!

Nicely done, you didn't mention the name of the other board.

Hmmm, ...POLL:
Diamond aircraft models debates or Texas Frito Pie webposts...
I know you were giving us a compliment... but WT_ ?

I said goodbye to red a while ago. It's nice to have an alternative. Blue is like chatting with a group of friends, while red seems like it's stuffed with one-upmanship and a quest to out-B.S. everyone else.

Well... for the same reason that I sometimes might prefer a scoop of icecream, and other times some salty boiled peanuts, I go to both boards. I do get a lot of entertainment from the political posts over there. :D

I guess that wasn't really clear, Dave :)

I have nothing at all against polls which are either informative or humerous (or both at the same time). What I was reacting to was a rash of polls that seemed to serve no purpose whatever. The DA20 vs DA40 question is meaningless without a statement of mission. Inexpensive training, DA20 maybe. Carrying 2 PAX -- a DA20 obviously won't work. Carrying 4 PAX, then neither works. So to me it was a moronic poll without a context to put it in.

I don't mind naive questions -- I certainly have asked my share over the years, and gotten patient, useful responses most of the time. What it does boil down to is that the red board has pretty much, as far as I'm concerned, become irrelevant. And frequently makes me angry to boot.

And yes, it was a compliment, and I guess you guys are stuck with me ;)

Ya know Bob, I didn't think of it until you raised it--haven't been to that other board for awhile. Last time I was there, someone I didn't know, that didn't know my background or experience jumped all over a post I made. There was a thread, and they didn't bother reading it from the beginning. Just jumped in, didn't know what was going on, who I was or anything about the topic--didn't bother them at all. When I later pointed a couple things out, they got testy enough that I didn't need to be dealing with 'em.

I may occasionally go back there to see what's going on, but I'd have to be bored, ready for inconsiderate, misinformed, critical folks. Yes, there are some good folks over there, but lots of great ones here that care about others and not much chafe in the wheat.

And, what Ken said!!!

I think Frank may have hit on our next big thread.

Salty boiled peanut vs cajun boiled peanuts.

I am a cajun fan myself and cook 'em up a couple of times a year. Since moving up into yankee land I either have to fly south or make them myself. Hardly anyone in the north knows what they are and if I describe them they make a face.

So should we hijack this thread or start on on peanuts?

Somebody brought some to Gaston's for us all to eat. Can't remember who (Carol?) or which kind they were. They were "different".

I would like to say:

You people on this board are great, I have no fear of posting any question I might have, no matter how dumb I might think it sounds. I know it will be responded to in an understanding and caring matter, I have yet to feel threatened in the lightest sense by anyone.

It's great to have friends and mentors that will answer your questions.

Thank you,

I've been moving back and forth between the boards, not really posting much anywhere, and I agree with you for the most part, Bob. I think it's also true that we need different things at different times. When I was a new student and later an aerobatics student, I wanted to hear people's experiences and pick up know-how at the same time. I posted in detail about every lesson and every flight! And I saved many threads in those days. I also read almost everything and got very upset at the name-calling and immaturity.

I've been going back and forth thinking I missed hearing all the new voices of students -- that eagerness and excitement, you know? But I find I don't have the patience I wish I had to respond to all the new people as they cross those threshholds. And there are SO MANY new people. But maybe it's also true that I'm at a different stage now and or just need a break from that. Maybe it's true of a lot of us. I do know that it feels a lot more comfortable here and I'm not going to be jumped on for saying something naive or something that just happens to be my experience. Also, I think I've met most of you in person! Sometimes I look through the names of those who are online, and I can't believe how many of you I actually know. So that's a nice feeling.

But, still, not to knock the other board, it is still there for us if we should want or need it sometime. It's good to have a choice. Sometimes I still don't know where I should post an experience -- here or there. I don't want to double post everything.

And I love the thread about Frito chili pie, and I want some. Who mentioned baked spaghetti pie? My mom made that for us all the time when I was growing up. :)

I still go to both, but I do like the personal feeling here.

Bob,

I think the Poll on the Red Board was concerning the Cirrus SR20 vs. Diamond DA40. I don't know either plane well, but I think they are relatively similar in capabilities and therefore mission purpose. I think the Cirrus has a little more HP though. 200HP for the Cirrus vs. 180HP for the Diamond, but I may be wrong. So I think the "pollster" was trying to get an ideas of what people thought about two relatively similar planes, but hey, I'm only guessing.

Boiled Peanuts - Yeach! Tried them once in Georgia and it was about like eating snot. What a way to ruin a good peanut.

And of course Bob, who started the thread. As an older pilot very shy who is now a newly minted Sport Pilot I find I learn and enjoy so much what is posted here. It reminds me when I worked as a teenager at the local field to earn flying lessons. That was so many years ago but still so fresh today. As it has been mentioned before POA is sort of the Back Porch of a small airport where all of us can share our flying experiences just the aviation pioneers did so many years ago. I cannot say thank you all enough for this older pilot really appreaciates and learns from all your posts and threads

To change the subject yes I am going to try out that Chilli real soon. YUM.

I'm a traditionalist as far as boiled peanuts go. Salty, with a very cold brew. :cheerswine:

There you go. Yep, it was me that brought them, Diana. I love those things.

What do you get if you boil peanuts for 2 hours in salty water?
Some seriously undercooked boiled peanuts.

Whoa! How long do you have to boil them?

I'm with you. Nasty, nasty things.

If the idea is simply to make you thirsty for more brew, I will take one of two routes, flying on a hot day (bonus points for acro) or buffalo chicken wings.

Umm. Well. Yeah, Anthony. That's part of MY problem -- I got so frustrated with that board that I stopped reading it very closely...

It still strikes me as an inane poll, though..

I think you're right about the HP.

I'm still not going back, though...

I cook 'em in a crock pot. I put in the raw peanuts, still in the shell. Fill with water and salt. If I want cajun I then add some hot pepers and dry crushed cayene pepper. Cover and then let cook on high for 8 hours, then on low for another 9 to 12 hours.

Sounds like the southern version of edamame. :) I boil those soybeans only seven minutes though.
Do you use fresh or frozen? I just bought a bag of frozen at Trader Joe's, but haven't tried them yet.

Well, I go back and forth, like Toby. There are some great people over there as well. It's like wandering from hangar to hangar at an airport. There are good people everywhere you go.

BTW, Rich Stowell started posting over there. :)

To all those whining sniviling liberal conservative communist facists you always repeat the same thing you will never........Oh sorry wrong board;) .
Seriously, Like many, I too look at both boards but this is usually where I end up. I dont' post near as much on the red board as I did over a year ago. I really like AOPA and the services they provide and I guess I enjoy the larger pool of participants and therefore information on the red board but POA is truly more like hanging out with old friends on the porch. The information on POA while not as vast is certainly as reliable and the memebershp I find generally more supportive.
As for the politics, I occasionally get sucked in but generally try to avoid the trolls. Its not to hard once you know who the posters and posts to avoid are.

And there's always the "Ignore" function.

There are some people I'd miss a lot if I didn't go over there sometimes. They post there, but not here.

I got several rounds of abusive "hate" email from the various ?pilots? or pilot wannabees over there who were complaining that I was prohibiting pilots who were taking antidepressives from flying. First answer, no I don't do that that's FAA. Second answer, maybe you could be re-evaluated. Third answer, was no answer. These guys are clearly out of psychiatric control, e.g, MANIC.

I withdrew my email message from AOPA. So, now it's not publically posted. If they wanna harass me, they can do it through POA. But, we have a little more control here.... :-).

I still answer quex over there, mostly because something is needed over there. But my flying stuff is over HERE.

Having said what I did, Adam, I don't regard AOPA as an organization and what the red board has become as the same thing at all. I still support the organization and contribute to the PAC. Only AOPA and EAA are looking out for us!

Sounds about right.

Toby, I've never seen frozen peanuts. I start with a bag a raw peanuts, put them shell-on in a big pot of water and boil them for a good 6 hours. I change out the water a couple of times when it gets a little nasty looking. At 6 hours I start checking them. Depends on the size of the peanuts. I do like the crock pot idea.

I put enough salt in them so they don't taste like snot :) Although I have to admit I know only from others what snot tastes like. ;)

I have visited there for only one reason in the last couple of months. I was alerted to a thread that included my name and that of my former publication, so out of curiosity I went and read it. A week later, out of sheer vanity, I went back to see if any additional posts had been made, and it was gone.

No idea why, nor do I particularly care. The only thing I can surmise is that someone took offense to a series of complaints about a certain publishing company's renewal notice/collections strategy. But it's odd considering some of the other stuff that, over the years, they have let stay up.

Frozen edamame, I meant. They have those at Trader Joe's. As far as boiling a peanut, I guess with enough salt 'snot too bad.

I like edamame too. Wondering when they became more mainstream. Now you can find them in regular grocery stores.

Never tried boiled peanuts.

Speaking of Trader Joe's snacks - anyone else tried the Wasabi coated dried peas? They're fantastic!
