Ski resorts near airports?

Anyone know of any ski resorts close to airports?
I'm on the east coast, I'd imagine that there are more towards the west?
 
Angel Fire, NM. Taos NM(meh). Los Alamos NM. Salida CO. Telluride CO. Leadville CO. Aspen CO.

How close is 'close'?
 
Idk, within about 15 minutes ir so? Would be awesome of there was a ski resort fly in!
 
Mtn skiing and GA aren't actually a good match. High alt, bit rocks, slopes, wind, snow, etc.

The sad truth. I knew there wouldn't be many that were together like some golf courses. Just kinda curious. Idk if I could even get gear in the plane (archer or 172) with a passenger...... and I hate rentals
 
Yes, in WV there is WV62, Windwood flyin Resort, which is in the Caanan Valley near Show Shoe and Timberline and Caanan Valley Resort

In Vermont there is Mt. Snow the runway is at the base of the mountain.

New England has a bunch that are near the mountains but not at the Mountains.

Hunter Mountain Airport in NY 97NY. Not sure how close it is to Hunter Mt. Ski Resort.
 
Box and ship your boots, suit and helmet to the ski area. They will accept them at pretty much any big ski area. Put your skis and poles in the back sticking up to the rear. I get my ski stuff in a Bonanza with minimal problems.

Ground transportation is no issue at the big name places. In Salida you can rent a car from the town Ford dealer real cheap. In Leadville, they might give you a ride up the highway, or you can hike over to 24 and stick your thumb out with a pair of skis, you'll be picked up on a wknd in about 20 min. In Angel Fire same thing. Telluride will send a car over if you stay at the lodge for a few nights. Taos is car rental, and same at Los Alamos NM. The best is at Crested Butte if you can convince Rich(airport mgr) to let you land, and the runway is open. You can hike to CB lift.
 
Rutland is Probably 15 minute drive to Killington, 30-40 to Okemo. Stowe has an airport, close to the mountain but I've never driven to and fro. FYI Sugarbush is closed in winter, becomes a XC ski center.

Haha. That is pretty true. The resort just up the road a few miles is struggling to get open because of the warm weather we are having in PA.
My sister went out to Colorado last year and didn't tell me (still not over that.... grrr....)

Winter Park & Mary Jane, bit of a drive from Granby, CO KGNB
Durango, CO

Central Utah has numerous ski resorts, fly into Ogden or SLC.

But....mountain flying in the rockies in the winter is not for beginners nor low powered airplanes. Fly into BJC or FTG or APA, rent a car or take a bus to the ski areas.

Holiday valley resort. Jamestown or olean airport. Western ny state.this is in the Lake Erie snow belt and draws a crowd from Cleveland and Canada. Usually lots of snow, well maintained.

In the east, short flight from DC:

Windwood, WV, (WV62) is near both Canaan and Timberine. Note: the runway is only plowed if there is an overnight guest flying in.

Elkins, WV, (KEKN) is the closest airport to Snowshoe and has rental cars. Note: West Virginia is a hilly place with winding roads, and it is nearly an hour's drive.

Bryce, VA, (VG18) is located right at the Bryce resort. Note: short runway; short ski runs, too, but convenient.

Garrett County, MD, (2G4) is near Wisp. Caution -- Note: arrange in advance for a rental car or be marooned..

Wilkes-Barre Scranton, PA, (AVP) is but a few miles from Montage, and it's easy to get a ride fron the FBO.

Lake Placid Airport, NY, (LKP) serves Lake Placid.

Bethel, ME, (0B1) is near Sunday River

Many others.

Fly into Truckee, Ca. And Nothstar is the first bus stop. You can pick up the bus right in front of the terminal.

very true...but flying in the Rockies on a good winter day is memorable

skipped Steamboat, Casper, and Jackson...:D

Not sure why you're quoting me, but whatev.

Eagle to Vail ski has gotta be almost 40 miles.

Durango to Purgatory? Maybe 50 miles.

It can be memorable even on a bad day. :rofl:

Got shut out of Aspen yesterday, went to Rifle instead. Had another try at Aspen today and made it in and out with only minor delays, which is amazing during the holiday period.

You're flying too much, you aught to take a day off for a BBQ. :D
 
I hate Aspen. Unless you have a twin, preferably a kero burner you are a scum doof, and are 'in the way'. Despite it being one of the closest runways to the lift, between the runway and the first lift is at least a couple of $100 bills. It is NOT for the 172 crowd.

My dislike is mainly rooted in their charging structure, but the few people I talked to there have the most serious case of cranio-rectumitis evar. Once they knew I wasn't in a G-IV, I might as well have grabbed a mop. Never - again.

Haven't been to Casper in over 30 years, drove from Cheyenne to ski.

As for memorable, did you notice my last paragraph? Probably added/edited it after you saw the original.

38 to be precise. But less than 30 to Beaver Creek. Shame they shut down the Breckenridge airport years ago.

Still, winter mountain flying is quite memorable...just gotta pick yer days.

DA-40 I used to fly had a ski storage tube in the empennage.

This is the busiest time of the year for us, when everyone else us on holiday, haha. Especially because we are so close to those ski areas.

BBQ sounds good but only if the ambient temperature is >50!

Isn't this the weekend? Right now? My clue was when there was a long wait at the first restaurant I tried. Oh yeah, it's a Saturday night.

Famous Dave's BBQ - one at Stapleton, another at Parker Rd & Arapahoe.

Or that place Clark likes on the west side.
 
Boyne Mountain in Michigan has some pretty descent terrain (well at least for the Midwest).

The airport (KBFA) is right at the base of the hill. They have a free shuttle to and from the airport.

There is a full resort with a number of good restaurants and even an indoor water park. We try to fly in every year. It's roughly 2 hours north east of Chicago. Mainly because I won't fly over the Lake in the winter.

The airport and all of the amenities, as well as descent skiing, makes it a pretty good weekend destination.
 
Sun Valley, ID....15-20 minute drive from the airport, and skiing right now is fantastic!
 
The nice thing about summit county Colorado, all the buses are free. Take a bus to any of the ski resorts for free.
 
Ok, what is the ski area with the CLOSEST airport (I say Aspen to Buttermilk).

Steamboat Springs is really close, and last time I went at Christmas time, there were no lift lines. All the people who had gone other places were complaining about lift lines everywhere else, all week I skied straight into the lift line, never had to wait more than three chairs. Plus you have Strawberry Fields right up the road for a good soak in the hot springs.
 
Taos, NM (KSKX). We've flown in several times at night. Between Memphis and Taos, there is only one mountain range to cross and that's just a few miles east of Taos. Although KSKX is high, it's located in a huge "valley". There terrain is not particularly hospitable West of Tulsa, but flying into Taos isn't like flying into Vail.
 
Mammoth Yosemite Airport to Mammoth Mountain's Main Lodge is less than 13 miles.

Odd, I've never had any issues getting transportation at Garrett County. They have a courtesy car and I've found even without it there's no problem.

Somerset County, PA is not too far from Seven Springs (I think they finally closed 7SP but it was never open when there was snow anyhow).
