Sightseeing flight in AK crashed

I've heard about that, reported to have been a sight-seeing flight.

It will be interesting to hear the cause

"Clint Johnson, head of the National Transportation Safety Board's Alaska office, said it was too soon to know circumstances of the crash, including whether the plane flew into the cliff."

Very sad, and off a cruise ship. That's going to be hard to overlook on the ride home.

Well, I can assure Clint right now that the plane did, in fact, fly into the cliff.

And just how did you determine it was a CFIT accident?

Airplanes can end up on a cliff by falling, breaking, or sliding down from above, as well. Say, the result of a midair or over speed.

I hope he didn't CFIT a plane full of pax in marginal weather. I assume they will be able to see if he just ended up next to the cliff base, or impacted it in flight.

Sad situation all around....

Troopers said search-and-rescue workers reached the crash site around 6 p.m. and confirmed the deaths of the eight passengers and pilot. Due to bad weather, they will not attempt to recover the bodies until Friday.

Vis 10+ ceiling maybe around 3,000.......that's pretty damn nice weather for up here.

This could be the kind of accident from which more rules are made.

If it was CFIT, yeah I would almost expect it. If it was something else that started the chain then maybe not.

Horrible way to end your trip...

May they rest in peace. Can't assume anything ,untill at least the preliminary investigation is posted.

I spent a summer flying out of Juneau, who I won't mention to protect the guilty..... but over the course of the years they lost at least one plane in good conditions flying into a mountain while everybody was looking outside and another pushing the weather on a scenic tour, flight doesn't need to occur to entertain the Tourons. This weather looks fantastic.

8 people on a vacation, planning nothing but to go have a great time, and the day ends so sadly. I'm sick over this....

I was Right seat in a Beaver three years ago in this same area; great views and what a great way to see the country. RIP to the families.

Sad deal,,,,:sad::sad::sad:..

Makes a perfect case for SV if it really was CFIT... All bets are off if he broke the plane or stalled it into the rocks....

We have "3D Vision" in our planes which is quite nice. Sorta like SVT, but not really, and our caravan has a glass cockpit which is also nice.

Yes, likely doesn't mean much.

“It was a bad crash site,” volunteer rescue worker Chris John told the Alaska Dispatch News, adding that the weather in the area at the time was windy and turbulent.

Conditions at the nearby Ketchikan International Airport were overcast and rainy around the time of the crash, the National Weather Service said.

Due to bad weather, efforts to retrieve bodies will begin on Friday, a state trooper said.

Sorry for those involved.
