As for me I would tell the kids when asked directly, that some things they have to figure out on their own, which is good overall advice for lots of things.
I did get into trouble with one of the younger ones once when talking about my trip to the North Pole--his eyes got really big and he said, Did you see Santa? I told him no, just snow and ice. But I'm pretty sure it didn't diminish his belief in Santa, he probably just figured I wasn't looking in the right direction.
