Should I renew AOPA membership?

You are not alone.

http://www.yumaairportwatchdog.com/

AOPA has been MIA on this from what I understand. When they show up and fight this fight, I'll throw my 40 bucks back (heck I'll quadruple it) at them and ignore everything else they do that raises my blood pressure.

That website looks like it was put together by a 13 year old

I'll renew when they give me the Citation.

Trust me, if they gave you one the operating costs per quarter would be more than the value of your current airplane, whatever it happens to be! :hairraise:

I've been an AOPA member for 20+ years, I like the magazine, I think they are a positive voice in DC, and I may be the only one that has never had a solicitation phone call.:D
I understand a couple points here, but for me it's a pretty good $40.00 spent each year.
The magazine features higher end airplanes than the average pilot flies, but what do car magazines feature, 2005 Toyota Camry's with 90,000 miles? same for other magazines directed at hobbies, golf mags don't usually have 26 handicappers like me giving advice with my 6 year old clubs and playing on recently aerated greens. :dunno:
Bottom line AOPA isn't perfect, but it's the voice for general aviation.:)

Are you down to 175 yet?

I don't know how much it costs to operate a for sale sign :D

When I get to see AOPA's top guy with guests using the airplane for non AOPA business it makes me wonder who is paying for that.
Not sure about the particular instance you're referring to, but it's pretty standard, AFAIK, to allow people, including officers, to rent the use of the corporate aircraft when they're not being used for official business. That brings in revenue and results in a greater use of the asset. Now, if the officers aren't paying for the use of the aircraft, then it's a problem with the financial oversight of the organization, not the ownership of the aircraft itself, and getting rid of the aircraft neither eliminates the problem nor improves the viability of the organization.

In other words, tying your support of the organization to getting rid of the Citation is nonsensical!

Only computer nerds care about website aesthetics. Real pilots don't care.

You mean consumer nerds.

Most real computer work by real computer nerds gets done at the command line. (I like mine amber on green, but to each their own.)

Web browsers are the stand-off weapons of computing. We can take 'em or leave 'em. We had gopher, FTP, and Xmodem -- long before browsers existed. ;)

Nowadays since there's lots of folks who are on the shared networks who shouldn't be, SSH is the weapon of choice.

If you want to be down in the real computer firefight, you'll be at the command line. Even Windows admins. The good ones, anyway. ;)

No, holding pretty steady for the last few months, which isn't all bad.;)
Miss your comments on the red board, somebody asked me if you were OK. I told them, no, he's nuts!

There are numerous legitimate reasons for a C-level executive to be using the company (or association) airplane. It could also be blatant abuse. If I had to guess, It would be on the former, especially in today's high- scrutiny environment. If you really want to know, why don't you ask them?
When I get to see AOPA's top guy with guests using the airplane for non AOPA business it makes me wonder who is paying foor that.

It was becoming a bit tedious so I decided to take a break. And I trust you're not thinking my mental aberrations are a secret.

Ugh. Just opened the mail to find an all new evil from AOPA.

"AOPA Plus."

Not kidding. You pay more to "support GA" and you get a dedicated phone number to call.

Yup. 'Cause what we need is more division in the ranks. Leadership 101 - Lets split up the troops.

All AOPA members are not created equal. I expect this from these organizations in the form of buying bricks at walkways and crap like that, but an actual different class of membership?

(Complete with plastic keychain thing like you get for the memberships at gas stations and grocery stores to give you the special 800 number only "Plus" members are allowed to call.)

Great idea, AOPA. Ranks right up there with the Wine Club.

I saw that my membership is about to auto-renew. I'm tempted to go yank it.

If regular AOPA isn't effective enough and needs AOPA Plus, what's the point in a regular membership? I'm sure the "Plus" members can handle things on their own.

Haha, I just opened the same envelope 15 minutes ago.

They can "Plus" this.

I will keep my AOPA membership. It really is the only game in town to support this little mental disorder. However, when I get this "license to learn" it also gave AOPA the license to try to sell me everything, and anything.
