Ok I have tried sooo many different razors and most with poor sucsess...I use a Schick Quatro now but am not all that pleased with the shave.

In doing some research it looks like I may want to start shaving with a straight "cut throat" razor.

Does anyone or has anyone used a straight razor?

Any straight razor things I should know, etc.

Thanks!

i use a one of those Mach 3 things. no shaving cream though, just some warm water. beats the hell out of that crappy electric i had...

Shaving?!! Hah!

Once I started my new job (stay-at-home Dad), I figured out pretty quickly why guys grow beards. If you haven't shaved for a few days, you look like a bum. If you haven't trimmed your beard for a few days, you look like a guy with a beard.

Ditch the razor!!!!!:D:yes:

The Schick Quattro is awesome. The blades last for months and months, and shave very close and smooth for me.

If the Quattro isn't getting it for you, look into electrolysis! :P

Yeah no kidding....I just have a really course beard...I can dull a quatro in no time, but the titanium blades are better I think then the orig.

I think I use the Mach 3 or something like that. If I don't shave every day it is usually a painful experience.

Jay,

I've tried everything. I have curly hair and it ingrows if you look at it funny - so I have to keep it really tight, every single day. It doesn't help that my fair Irish skin is extremely sensitive, too.

So, I've taken to a modification of the "barber shop" shave. I have a warmer for the lotion/gel, and I heat up a face cloth under EXTREMELY HOT water (175F at the tap), wring it out, and put it on my face before and after the shave. I use extremely hot water to rinse the razor, and rinse after every stroke, moving slowly with even pressure. I've found that most shaving lotions suck and only a few are good - Nivea, Edge Sensitive, and (I can't believe I'm saying this), Aveeno Positively Smooth Shave Gel (which my wife uses). I started using it last year during cycling season (as most men's shave gels suck for shaving your legs) and tried it on my face, and it works great. Just have to put on some aftershave so I don't smell like lavender when I come into the office.

I've used the Gillette Fusion (you are from Boston, you must use their products ;) ) ever since it came out, and I swap blades once a week.

Even then, my face still can look pretty bad. A straight edge razor isn't for the faint of heart and you can screw up your face real good with one. Floyd's 88 in Boston, plus King of Shaves in Back Bay, are great places to take one for a test drive and see how you feel / how you react.

Good luck!

Cheers,

-Andrew

nah shaving cream is for sissies :) i usually shave every 2 or 3 days. if i wait for 3 days i have to be pretty gentle.

Sounds like a road trip...up for Magianos?

Why not. One of them used to allow you to smoke a cigar while getting a shave; I don't think you can do that any more. We may have to go and stop at Modern's before we are done; best damn cannoli in Boston.

You mean you rough and tuff pilots just don't get your leatherman tool out of your flight bag and use that???

I use the cheap disposables Jay, so I can't help you.

HA! your all wimps. I usually just break a beer or whiskey bottle and shave with one of the shards.:hairraise:

When I camp, I use the straight razor. I've never gotten a smoother shave. That said, I've also never cut myself so deep before...

With practice you'll love it.

Norelco Quattro.

You have to replace the blades once a year.

... :P

I've used every blade out there and never got more than three comfortable shaves. But then I get my "five-o-vlock shadow" by noon. It's not so much that I have thick beard as on that grows fast. I have a shaped short beard in a week.

I also shave dry. If I keep it up it isn't as bad as it sounds. If I skip a day then it's on to shave cream. Why do I shave dry? I find I don't cut myself so much if I can see the problem areas. If I don't cut myself I don't have so many problem areas (these are basically small zits).

But, this year, after thirty years of experimentation, I perfected my routine :lightning: The secret is the Braun shaver with the liquid cleaner base gizmo. I can shave every day and the razor is fresh and clean. The thing is sterile and it has really almost totally eliminated blemishes. It is good enough I can go without a blade for several days if I don't need a "goin' out" shave. I still need a sharp blade every few days for the throat area.

If I've gone a whole Friday to Monday without shaving I can use the trimmer to bring it down to where the shaver can take care of it normally. I could whack it all in one swoop with a blade but I find the micro cuts of lead to blemishes.

Lucky for me my wife likes my "scruffy" look on week ends. Woo HOO!!

Psh, ya'll are wusses. Some use 100LL from the fuiel sumps to run lawmowers. I soak my face in 100LL and burn the hair off!

Actually, I'm using a Mach 3 turbo right now, but I did get one of those 5 blades Fusions mailed to me, and I must say that worked awesome, but I'd already bought the Mach3 packs. I have super coarse hair so I took a tip from the ladies. I shave in the shower. Hot water, and all that steam helps soften it up. No soap, no gel, no cream, just hot water and a blade. Tho once I did trim a little with a fillet knife. Be very very careful.

Can't help you Brother. I'm one of those cheap guys that uses a disposable.
Also, shaving in the shower is how I've done it for years and it does help with my sensative skin.
Unfortunatly I have to shave daily, or twice if going out in the evening, or else my face just looks dirty :dunno:
My barber use to shave me with a straight blade but then I learned her name was Lorena! Step away from the blade :)

I just started shaving my whole face again since shaving off the beard a couple of months ago. I tried all the razors to see if there had been any improvement in the decade wince I last cared. IMHO there has been no improvements at all except in the price of blades i.e. they cost more. I am now just using cheap disposables and they work the same as the expensive ones.

I've worn a beard for 33 years, except for 8 weeks of boot camp...can't help you at all!

I grew a beard in my early twenties to hide the baby face. Now, I'm afraid to shave off the beard.

It isn't so much what you shave with as when you shave. After the shower is much better than before of without. Soap or shampoo and water softens the beard hair.

Unless you have an electric shaver, in which case you need the beard to be dry...unless it's a wet/dry electric shaver. Mine does a lousy job when my face is wet even it's just because I've been sweaty.

What are you shaving Jay?

Why not use conditioner instead of shaving cream. Makes your skin feel smoother.

My face Brook, but my beard is really course and it seems that from what I read the closest shave is from a straight razor.

I use disposable razors when traveling- make sure you get a brand name. One time I ran out & the hotel was kind enough to have razors they gave you if you forgot yours. They got dull so fast that they only gave 1/2 shave.

To knock down the irritation, I use 100% methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol (whatever is in the lab) as an aftershave. It only stings for a little while.

Right now I'm using a Remington electric. Usually every other day unless I have to go up to the main office for a meeting, etc. which requires a 'clean-cut look'.

My wife is requesting me to try a beard this fall when I start back to school. Yeah.. So now I'll be the 27/28 year old guy sitting in class with a creepy looking weirdo beard. Sounds like ton-o-fun!

nice article in the Miami Herald this morning on shaving and how to get that barber shop close shave.
