Shaving question for the guys [n/a]

Blades that last months and months? no shave gel? straight razors?

My face hurts just listening to all of this.

Pick a blade (not a plastic disposable unit, but a unit that has changeable heads) and stick with it. Your skin will actually become accustomed to a particular blade and will respond better after a few weeks. Change the blade often and don't worry about the cost. You will have this skin the rest of your life. At the first sign of resistance, change the blade. This is usually every two or three days depending on your hair. Longer if you're a young buck, more often if you're a bear.

Buy a good shower mirror and shave in the shower, after shampooing and conditioning (gives time for the facial hair to absorb moisture and become softer). After two weeks of shaving in the shower you won't ever want to shave anywhere else.

Make sure to use a shaving gel, not the cheap foamy stuff from Barbasol. The purpose of a gel is to stand the hair up but to also be a lubricant. the Foam doesn't do either very well. Alternatively, if you're a purist, you can use a cake of shaving soap and a brush. Again, if you switch, give yourself a couple of weeks using the new soap/gel to get accustomed to it.

And yes, I'll say this: shaving is damned rough on your skin....you really should put some sort of moisturizer on after shaving.

A mirror in the shower is great. I put one in a few years ago and it is the best thing I had ever done. I travel a lot and do not have access to that on the road and I miss it a lot.

Ok, First... we get into some really weird conversations for an avation board.

One last suggestion about shaving in the shower. (No I don't shave my face just my legs). You want to give a little time to let the water/steam soften up the hair, but you don't want to wait too long if your trying for a close shave. Your skin is also absorbing water and will plump a little and you will not get as close a shave as if you did it out of the shower.

If you want a really close "shave" that lasts a while, try waxing!:hairraise:  :hairraise:  :hairraise:

Missa.

maybe when CFIs start getting paid about 10 times what they get paid now. The blades on my razor cost enough that i buy one when it pretty much wont cut any more. this thread reminded me though. when i went to memphis i used a disposable and it actually worked really well, as good or better than my mach 3 turbo super duper blade. maybe i should just use those.

No shave creme Tony???!!!!

Tony's a manly man! No wussy shaving cream needed!

I use an electric right now. Yeah, they suck, but they do the trick quickly and easily. If I'm in a dress-up situation I'll use whatever blade's in the drawer. I actually have done the brush-and-soap thing, but of all the varieties I prefer Edge gel.

Straight blade? Yikes.

I grew a beard in my early twenties to hide the baby face. Now, I'm afraid to shave off the beard.

Same here. I'm not so much afraid as much as I've found that "chicks dig it." :D

As soon as a gray hair sneaks in there, it's gone. However, my dad has no gray hairs yet and he's 65. :D

Well, the men in my family have always had a nice, thick, full head of hair... When they died young. :hairraise:

Maternal grandfather died at age 48 of brain cancer. He was a radio man in WWII. Hmmm... Paternal grandfather died a year or two before I was born (heart valve problem), I think he'd have been in the 50-55 range.

But, dad's goin' strong at 65 and has a head full of non-gray hair. Heck, someone at a conference once asked him when he was going to finish grad school. He was 48 at the time. :) Hopefully I'll be in the same boat. :fcross:

well ive always heard that you get your hair from your moms side of the family. pretty much every male on moms side was/was going bald by the time they got to 40. only a little left on the sides by 60.

Plenty of hair, just not so much where it used to be, and way too much where it didn't used to be ... :dunno:
A few years ago, I found a picture from my Navy days when on one of the many ocassions a buddy and I went up to Mount Baker in Washington. I initially saw it and wondered who the hell "that guy" was. Turns out, it was me... when I had a full and very thick head of hair. :(

At least it's easy to pick out the pictures of myself as a kid. I just look for the troublemaker. :)

Lets see if I can thread creep this shaving thing.

I am not so sure we are really an aviation board. The name of this board is Pilots of America. We are all pilots but just because we are hanging out together it does not mean that we only talk aviation. There is another board that shall remain nameless, that has chosen to be an aviation only board. If you ask me that was a mistake as there seems to be much less of a community there. Here we talk about all kinds of stuff. many of the subjects reflect our diverse interests and make for some fun discussions. I think that is a good thing and is one of the reason why this board is a nicer neighborhood to hang out in.

Well said Scott and I have to agree with all the many interesting people we have here, life, career, hobbies, etc.

Oh and by the way...... I popped my 1,000 cherry.

I take serious issue with your implication this is the "blue board!!!" :D

Although, PoA does accept all pilots... worthy and worthless, alike. :)

point taken....though even when I was a very very poor student, I still didn't use a BIC (a.k.a. butter knife, a.k.a. most hated invention of Satan's workshop)

I follow Tony's school of thought... Gillette Mach 3, no shaving cream. Except I use it on the whole melon (partially due to genetics and partially due to the "chicks dig it" factor) save for my goatee, and I usually shave in the shower, with no mirror. Funny thing is, I almost never knick myself using this method, but when I shave with cream in front of a mirror I look like I was in a plane crash.

Same for me... I wonder why that is? :dunno:

I swear, the Mach 3 blades were more durable years ago, when they were introducing the product and persuading us all to use it; now the blades wear out in no time, and still cost a raft of cashish!

That's why I went back to cheap disposables. They all suck, pay as little as you can.

I use the same blade...until...I lose it. It hurts--but it still works. Man up.
