I like my whisky like I like my women... 16 yrs old and all mixed up in coke.

Favorite whisky per unit dollar right now is Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. Glenmo La Santa is way up there too. Best non-peated single malts in the $50 range IMHO.

For a reasonable peated malt, well, Laphroaig Quarter Cask or 10 yr.

Lagavulin 16 or Distiller's Edition are fantastic and proabably more approachable, but the price is higher.

Back on the unpeated side.. Glendronach 15 is a go-to.

Auchentoshan Virgin Oak is a fantastic malt.

So many more but... your turn. What are your absolute favorites and favorites per dollar? Maybe I'll grab a bottle over the holidays.

"Old enough to vote" is how I describe my preferred scotches. Lasanta is a fave; though I haven't tried the Quinta Ruban, I am looking forward to. I have Chivas if there's no special occasion.
 
Talisker's offerings from the Isle of Skye are a different experience if you're willing to give it a try.
 
I drink Johnny Walker Black for my every day Scotch.

I keep bottles of Glenlivit and Macallan around for special friends or occasions.

I do have a bottle of Macallan 18 hidden away for a really special occasion. At $250/bottle, I would be broke in a few months if I drank that regularly. I admit that I drink more than I should, and my wife says my Scotch bill competes with our avgas bill.
 
Macallan 12 gets the job done

I like the 18, but the 12 is darn near on the same level for 1/5th the price.

Tried the double black yet? Thoughts if so?
 
About 10-15 yrs ago I was working in the Highlands for several weeks spread out over a couple of trips. While I was there one of the local guys got me to sample as many single-malts as I could. It was educational to have 3 or 4 side-by-side to compare color and flavors. "Chalk and cheese" is how he described it, some are smoky, some are malty, some are peaty, some are affected by different water hardness levels. And all are different. I found a couple here, at my local liquor store, but I got priced out a number of years ago. I like the $tuff, but not that much.

Local distillery here makes one of the best bourbons in the country. I've brought it to POA fly ins to great acclaim.

I like all the other stuff you guys are talking about, but my wallet not so much.
 
I'm a bourbon man,but if I'm going to enjoy a scotch with friends it's either Glenlivit,and on rare occasions Macallen 18.
 
Anything older than 12 and all I can taste is the barrel. For my money it isn't worth the crummy flavor to pay more.

Funny Glenlivit story. I was in Korea a couple decades ago and was staying at the Hyatt in Seoul. Went downstairs looking for refreshments and found the ballroom where a large celebration was ongoing as Glenlivit's license to sell in Korea had just been approved. As part of the ceremony, the CEO was on stage and they were auctioning off a bottle of the 75YO reserve for charity. It finally sold for just over 1 million dollars :eek:.

Best part was when the guy took it back to his table (many layers of security away from me), he opened it and the people at his table drank it......:yes:
 
Sorry but scotch is like paint thinner to me :) - nothing beats a 21 year old Bushmills Single Malt.

Making great product since 1608 !!!

You got me started for the afternoon,had a few friends over for some bourbon,. We tried some wood fords,willets and some Jeffersons ocean single batch. Unfortunately ,no scotch drinkers in the group.

I tried the Double Black. It was good, but a bit too smokey for my taste.i also tried the Platinum. It was a gift. It was really smooth. A little too smooth. It didn't seem to have any character. I have tried a lot, but I keep going back to JWB.

My choice... even if there is a special occasion...
 
Oban, Lagavulin, and any of the Balvenies. I've never been a fan of Glenlivet or GlenMorangie although I know they are popular. I am partial to the Islay Scotches but like all of them.

I used tell people that Johnnie Walker Green Label was one of the best values on a decent Scotch but it has been about 10yrs since I've had any. It was noticeably better than the Black Label and close enough in quality to the Gold that it was my favorite daily Scotch. I usually keep a bottle of JW Black on hand as I have a hard time spending the money I used to on alcohol.
 
Dalwhinnie or Jura. Went on a Scotland distillery tour a couple years ago. Didn't get down to the Isle of Jura but sure enjoyed the Dalwhinnie tour. Favorite by far.
 
How can you guys tell the difference? It all tastes the same to me, like trying to tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi.

Maybe it's my unrefined palate.

Try an extreme like Laphroig, Talisker, or Lagavulin you'll taste the difference.
 
If I drink Scotch it's usually Laphroaig 18 is excellent.

But I certainly prefer tequila.

Just tonight on a cold and snowy night in Durango, I had a bartender make me what he called an Oaxacan Old Fashioned. A good Milagro Select Anejo tequila in place of the Scotch, some Fidencio Mezcal for smoke, agave syrup instead of sugar, add some house bitters and a orange peel twist! Amazing!

Chivas is unusually good for cleaning paintbrushes. The Qunita Ruban is great, but I prefer the Lasanta. Laproig, Talisker, Ardbeg are my go-tos. For early Christmas I received bottles of The Glenlivit 18 and Old Ballantruan, which I haven't tried yet.

Pretty much all of the above mentioned Scotches are good. Sheep Dip is bad. Y'all should try it. Haha.
 
The Macallan 15 year is quite a nice single malt scotch!

I'm more of a bourbon guy as well, but if I'm going for that peaty flavor I prefer a good Irish Whiskey. The best I've had is Middleton.
 
Any ideas what I should do with a bottle of Ardberg Perpetuum that tastes like concentrated asphalt?

I liked Lagavulin 16, which is a smoky spirit from Islay, so I thought I'd try something even smokier, Ardberg, only to find I can't drink the stuff. Not straight, not mixed with anything I've tried. Don't know what to do with it short of pouring it out, and at over $100 I haven't come to that yet. Any ideas?

Hang onto it and use it to clean the belly of your airplane...
 
There is a story that, during Prohibition, the importation of Scots whisky was illegal. Laphroig was imported as a "disinfectant". Apparently US customs thought that anything smelling like Laphroig couldn't be used for anything other than medicinal purposes. It was the single best selling whisky legally during prohibition in the U.S. It was prescribed to those in need of medicinal alcohol.
