Science Quiz

That's a reasonably good technical explanation which of course has nothing to do with the average person's perceptions. When dealing with information intended for the masses such as this quiz, one must go with the flow. All of it is typical for our "soundbite" social/political mentality...

I don't disagree, and I answered it accordingly :wink2:

The CO2 question supports your thinking as well.

I reckon somewhere down the line, this poll will be used to support the anthropogenic global warming/climate change alarmist crew somehow. "In a recent poll, 99% of Americans believe we are causing a catastrophic climate shift, and are in support of more stringent regulations on fracking, increased government spending to counter the problem, elimination of private airplane use, and free wedding cakes and pizza for all LBGT folks.

Hmmm...I thought it was fracting. :)

Or hfracting. But, of course, the "h" is silent.

thats phracing you dummy, go to NAPA to a proper frase and speling book

I know there shouldn't be a "k" in fracking.
Unfortunately, when using English rules, "fracing" doesn't sound right, and "fracting" would is too close to "fractionating", which is a process we use in natural gas processing. I'm afraid we're stuck with "fracking" when referring to hydraulic fracturing.

What a buncha turds :rolleyes2:

Blasphemer!...and to think that Halliburton was born in Oklahoma!

Which natural resource is extracted in a process known as “fracking”?

The answer is, none of the above.

This process of hydraulic fracturing involves pumping fluid down into the well bore at high enough pressure to create fractures in the rock formation. A sand slurry is pumped down the hole and into the cracks, essentially so when the pressure is bled off, the sand will support the cracks and not allow them to close back up. This is all to allow the oil and gas to flow more easily to the well so it can then be recovered. Oil and gas are not extracted by this process, and therefore, the question is invalid. In fact, since the process involves pumping stuff down hole, it's basically the opposite of "extracting" anything.

That was it, oil was missing as well. Frac'ing is just a process that enhances extraction, the extraction part is still the same old drilled well. (BTW, frac'ing would be the way to spell it by the arcane guides of English)

I agree with that spelling, Henning. Nicely done.

Yeah, other than the question being bunk, the primary natural resource that frac'ing is used to help extract isn't even a choice. Go figure.

9/10 here. I had to put on the ol' thinking cap for some of those. That thing was dusty ;)

apparently some people don't understand the concept of multiple guess questions...

I broke the computer. It recorded 12/13 because supposedly I did not answer one of the questions. But I know I did for I am methodical and attentive to detail. And because this was for all the marbles it was that important.

English is a living language. New words come into it daily. Fracking is a new word.

9/10 (proof that guessing works most of the time)

I was expecting maybe chemistry questions - not biology or what not.

8th grade stuff.

Several years ago one of the canidates for NC govenor vowed that if he was elected, he would improve the state educational level to the point where every high school graduate would be able to read at the eighth grade level.

8/10

Not bad, I never took biology and only took one chem course.

I'm pretty sure the general public would have bombed this test if it had been used in that research poll.

I think some of us have areas of more science knowledge than others depending on personal interests. Being multiple guess and a little word origin knowledge can go a long ways.

I did see an interesting trend in that first test results.
Women were lagging on many of the questions behind men, but
women seemed to do better on questions involving medicine/health.

It is a living language, but it does have rules for word development and contractions. Fracking is a word with no discernible root, while Frac'ing is a contraction of fracturing, which is what people are actually trying to accomplish, and does so following the arcane rules provided for eliminating syllables.;)

Fracking is what cartoon characters say in place of ****ing.

10/10. Admittedly, I lucked out a bit on the ribosome question as it's not exactly in my field.

We're laying in bed enjoying our morning cup of coffee and I quizzed Chris. She got 12/13 and 10/10. She's an RN so that helped immensely on the second one...she gave me many of the answers before I even gave her the choices.

I got 13/13 but I got the question about whether I was male or female wrong.

Missed the ribosome question.

When I was young, liquid granite
I was diagnosed schizophrenic
Neither feldspar, nor mica, nor quartz
But the sum of the three
Bonded igneously
That means melted together for life

Well, I was hot and dejected
Oh, I was injected
Under layers and layers of dirt
But, it was there that I changed
All my crystals rearranged
Into G-N-E-I-S-S, gneiss

So, take a look, and you'll see
That I'm not what I used to be
I've been touched metamorphically
All the heat and the pressure
Have changed me forever
So don't take me for granite, I'm gneiss

Reminds me of a joke my mom used to tell:

About the fellow that failed geology because he took everything for granite!
