Say hello to SkyDog

Sorry to hear that Nick. Here's hoping he turns up!

The saga is officially over, and I'm now more displeased with Albuquerque than I ever have been before.

Today I found the following:
attachment.php

He had been in the shelter since yesterday afternoon. He had been picked up almost immediately after he got away from piecing the day together. They had his chip number and my information on file, but never called me or AVID to tell us about Piper's discovery.

Moreover, when I went in, they had no timer on holding him, and he was available for adoption from the public.

I'm so angry right now, I don't even know how to speak properly. Apparently, if you live in Albuquerque, the microchip is useless. I need to find some sort of GPS implant so I can do Animal Control's job for them.

Why do I live here again? Why do I pay taxes for some lazy fat moron to sit in a chair and tell me they don't have my dog when they clearly do?

edit: I forgot the most important part: My dog is home, and I'm finally happy again.

One of the dogs we had had been a stray that never got connected with the owner. She had a good life with us.

Same for this dog. His old tag said his name was Max. We renamed him Baxter, and he is spoiled rotten. Why he tries to run is beyond me. If I had it as good as he does, I'd fight to keep other dogs from discovering my situation so I wouldn't have to share.

YAY!!! Glad to hear you found Piper!! Whoo-hoo! Steak dinner for both of ya!

P.S.--Who was happier to see the other!? I bet he was wagging his fool tail off!

KOOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good. And you're absolutely correct to be ****ed off. If I were you, I'd write a letter to the editor of every paper in the county, and CC it to whatever elected officials have responsibility for that shelter (is it run by the city? by the county?).

The fact that your dog was up for adoption already is utterly inexcusable. I mean, that's just flat-out bad.

But, I'm glad that you found dog. In the end, that's what matters.

PS - Let me know if you want help writing that letter to the editor. I can write some nasty ones. :)

Glad Piper is back.
You should write a letter. Most communities, the animal control officer is an appointed position. THAT moron should be UN-appointed PRONTO!

Letter... good.

Local TV news... even better. Get Piper's story on TV. They like these kind of "expose" stories. Make some calls! Blow the lid off "ShelterGate".

Whew! Great news!

Now that you have exhaled, I feel compelled, as a dog-lover, to remind you that more important than the annoying fact that the system failed you is that you learned that keeping him safe is your responsibility alone.

A chip isn't going to actually protect him, when you think about it. They might have called you right away... having found a dead dog. :nonod:

So when you do lay into those responsible for the recovery screwup (as you should!!)... be humble. The whole thing started with a error on your part. :nono:

Maybe that thought will keep you from actually strangling somebody...:D

I know I'm lecturing, sorry... and I'm not perfect, either. Shortly after I first adopted Peg, I had her with me at work, and tied her outside the pizza place across the street when I went there to grab a slice on my break. About 1/2 hour later I was back on the job and a co-worker came up and said "Uh... why is Peg tied up across the street?" :yikes:

I've never been so ashamed of anything I've ever done, and I have done some pretty messed-up stuff in my time. I also don't think I've ever run so fast in my life!!! I was kicking myself for days after that, and the thought of what might have happened still makes me feel sick inside.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go hug my doggie...:D

Agreed with the whole raising a stink, but for tonight, don't worry about it.

Piper is home, and you two need to spend some quality time together!

(I still think it would've been funny if he'd been spotted at the airport watching the planes.... :D )

If that's not a "will somebody pleeeeeeease get me out of here and take me home and I promise never to run off again" look, I've never seen one.

Cool down.
Enjoy your puppy; give him a hug. He's home, and - no matter how that came to be - that's the important part.

Tomorrow, share your story and your concerns/cautions with other pet owners in your area - ensure that they understand what might happen to their beloved pet, should he/she become lost in Albuquerque.

Next week, start figuring out how you can get out of the hell-hole in which you seemingly live - guns, crazies, drunk drivers, dog thieves...

(BTW - I was so happy to hear about Piper, I let my beans-n-rice boil over while typing my response.)

Nick: YAY!!!!!!!!!!

You must be so relieved. Furthermore, you've proven how much you love your dog by how much effort you've put into finding him.

You absolutely should write letters. This is completely inexcusable behavior on their part. It sounds like even if you'd had tags on him it wouldn't have helped. Clearly, that shelter needs some work. This might be a good opportunity for you to try to get involved and change things there, should you be so inclined.

Now, time for me to hug my dog. :)

Agreed.

"What the heck are you taking a picture for? GET ME OUT OF HERE!@%#@!%!@#$!$@!$!@" :D

Crappy day today, Nick; thanks for making it end on a high note!

Give ol' Piper a scritch behind the ears from me, OK?

Thanks everyone. I spent a good chunk of the evening playing with Piper tonight. Its amazing how much I missed that dog in the 2 days I'd been without him.

I'm going to raise a stink, but primarily, I just want to make sure that people know that the Albuquerque Animal Control Center is useless and manned by pathetic excuses for government employees.

Overall, the important thing I learned is that my irresponsibility lead to a good chunk of most of this. I need to install some sort of window block (maybe even a screen), I need to make sure that Piper always has his collar on with his tags, and I need to make sure I keep my address information up to date on his microchip. It wouldn't have helped in this case, but you never know if it may in the future.

Piper has grown quite a bit. From this:

My favorite pic, the one that made me the most emotional over the last 2 days, was this one:

Everyone's safe and back home from this adventure, everyone (maybe - not positive about Piper!) learned from it. :) All's well that ends well.

I told ya' man -- think good thoughts.

WOOOHOOO!!!! I'm really really happy for you Nick. That's just great news. I hope you and Piper enjoy a nice long weekend of goofing around in the park. Give him a new chew toy.

Good news for a Friday morning.

Glad he's back. I was very worried Nick.

You've just made my day so much better. I'm a sap for happy endings. Congratulations on getting your dog back.

I had no idea Piper would be that happy to be home.

Just chiming in now, but happy to hear everything turned out okay!

The picture of him in the shelter says it all....."I'm sorry, please take me back!" No one is a perfect parent and anyone to tries to lector otherwise is a moron. Maybe try to understand where the ball was dropped at the shelter and give them a chance to correct it. If they give you the cold shoulder then write the nasty letter. I'm truly glad Piper is back home and hope it doesn’t happen again with someone else’s dog.

Did the shelter say why they did not scan for the chip?

Also why did he end up in a shelter so far away from you? Wasn't your neighbors who brought him in? It sounds like they went out of their way to move him as far as possible form you.
